While several books have explored the fertile 1990s indie rock scene, precious few documentaries truly capture the period’s excitement. “Brainiac: Transmissions After Zero,” which premiered at SXSW and which will have its New York premiere Friday, offers a notable peek into the era via the lens of this arty Dayton, Ohio-based band that reached the top of the underground before tragedy touched the band due to a car accident which took the life of the act’s charismatic lead singer, Tim Taylor, just before the band were set to sign with a major label.
“Transmissions After Zero,” directed by Brooklyn-based filmmaker Eric Mahoney — and with funding help from fellow Ohioan Trent Reznor and actor Mark Hammill — chronicles Brainiac’s unlikely rise and subsequent fall with intelligence and humor. Chronicling the saga of a band who almost made it big turns out to be as necessary as documenting the ones...

Exclusive: Gael García Bernal among directors on anthology film.
Japan’s Nikkatsu Corporation has taken international sales rights on omnibus romantic drama Madly, which premiered at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival in April.
Comprised of six stories, all of which focus on the complications of modern love, the film features behind-the-camera stints from talent including Gael García Bernal, Sion Sono, Sebastián Silva, Mia Wasikowska, Anurag Kashyap, and Natasha Khan, all of whom directed one of the 15-minute vignettes.
Following its premiere in Tribeca, where star Radhika Apte picked up the festival’s best actress award, the film had a subsequent berth at the Melbourne International Film Festival in August.
The feature was produced by Eric Mahoney and executively produced by Nusrat Durrani.
Durrani commented: “Madly is a thrilling take on a universal subject and its six scintillating films tackle bold themes that represent a global state-of-the-union of love. We are happy to have Nikkatsu represent the film...

Not your run-of-the-mill future film festival selection, filmmakers Gael García Bernal (Déficit), Anurag Kashyap (Gangs of Wasseypur), Sebastián Silva (Nasty Baby), Shion Sono (Suicide Club), Natasha Khan and actress Mia Wasikowska each supplied a short supply with one overriding thematic that was commissioned by MTV World. While Madly doesn’t “scream” Sundance, we can’t help but think that the curious mix of filmmakers (including Park City habituals Silva and Bernal) adds enough clout to warrant a possible inclusion.

Apparently, someone is making a documentary about my hometown, Dayton, Ohio. Specifically, the North Ridge neighborhood of North Dayton. Despite the fact that this movie seems to paint Dayton in a somewhat negative, mostly accurate and undoubtedly interesting light, watching this trailer makes me hecka homesick. I used to live just a few blocks from the focal neighborhood and it was probably the best living situation I've ever had (aside from sleeping on a couch, living with three DJs (one of which would always be "spinning") and discovering mushrooms growing from weird places in the house).
Here's a description of the movie from its imdb page:
North Dixie Drive is the portrait of a small community of businesses and people residing in the Northridge section of Dayton, Oh. It is the story of big time wrestlers, mechanics, a donut salesmen, an eccentric country singer, barbers, exotic dancers and car repo men.
