We’re in the midst of a Nicolas Cage renaissance, especially in the horror arena. He was phenomenal as Red Miller in 2018’s Mandy and garnered great reviews for his turn in The Color Out of Space, which premiered at Tiff this weekend. And while the versatile actor is known for his prolificness, there’s one kind […]

Mandy, directed and co-scribed by Panos Cosmatos and starring Nicholas Cage, was one of 2018’s surprise horror hits. Not only was Cage perfection as the unhinged, vengeance-driven mountain man Red Miller, the film created an unlikely icon in the form of Cheddar Goblin, a disgusting mascot for a brand of macaroni and cheese that doesn’t […] The post Mandy Director/Co-Writer Teases Image of Official Cheddar Goblin T-Shirts Coming Soon appeared first on Dread Central.

As Red Miller in Panos Cosmatos’ Mandy, Nicholas Cage finally played a character worthy of his extreme range of emotions. Though often mocked for his enthusiastic “Cage Rage” in lesser films, the actor’s unhinged, Kabuki-eque portrayal of a man on a burning quest for vengeance was absolutely perfect. It’s almost time, dear readers! Halloween is nearly upon us, and we have one last batch of killer Blu-ray and DVD releases to get us ready for All Hallows’ Eve this week. One of the best films of 2018—Panos Cosmatos’ Mandy —arrives on both formats this Tuesday, courtesy of Rlje Films, and both Slender Man and Our House come home as well. The Matrix Trilogy is getting a much-deserved 4K treatment from Warner Bros., and a series that I really enjoyed back in the day—Chillers, hosted by Anthony Perkins—is headed to DVD, and I’m so excited to get the opportunity to finally revisit it.

Nicolas Cage has been cranking out straight-to-vod movies for ages, but “Mandy” broke that mold. The wild, heavy metal-inspired revenge saga screened in a handful of theaters when it came out on VOD in September, but the enthusiasm for director Panos Cosmatos’ eerie, haunting cult phenomenon turned it into a theatrical phenomenon. While it was released in accordance with a traditional day-and-date strategy, distributor Rlj Entertainment noticed a massive uptick in demand for the film, and the movie continues to expand to theaters across the country.
For Cosmatos, who spent eight years working on his follow-up to his similarly psychedelic breakout “Beyond the Black Rainbow,” the enthusiasm has extended far beyond his expectations. “This is very surprising to me,” he said in a phone interview. “I suspected the movie would find an audience, but that it would be a lot smaller.”

Panos Cosmatos’ Mandy has already known incredible success in the U.S.: Although the film was released there on a day-and-date basis, the number of people buying tickets to see it on the big screen has been unpredictably great. This popularity, combined with the fact that only a few, non-multiplex cinemas allow for day-and-date movies to play on their screens, has meant that screenings have been selling out for weeks. The film is now out in the U.K., and already set to break records of cinema attendance there, with already 1500 tickets sold at just one of the few cinemas showing it. U.K. viewers will only be able to stream the film a few weeks later, and they don’t seem ready to wait that long. The film’s main attraction is of course Nicolas Cage, who delivers one of his most deliciously hysterical performances of recent years as Red,...

About an hour into director Panos Cosmatos‘ Mandy, something horrible happens. Something so horrible that it breaks Red Miller’s mind. In “Mandy,” Nicolas Cage sits at the center of a hypnotic cinematic experience that’s equal parts deranged revenge story and abstract study of grief. Director Panos Cosmatos’ follow-up to “Beyond the Black Rainbow” stars Cage as Red Miller, who lives an isolated existence in the wilderness until the demented cult leader Jeremiah Sand (Linus Roache) shows up and destroys Red’s life. The second half of the movie finds Cage taking on Red and his goons with a series of weapons — an ax and a chainsaw both get their due — while delivering a wild, kooky performance that ranks as one of his most memorable in ages.
Cage knows that most people will lump “Mandy” in with any number of the extreme, genre-based roles that he’s tackled over the years, but has long felt that these decisions reflect a cogent philosophy. In the following interview, he explained his frustrations...

Half revenge thriller, half trippy mural on the side of a van, Panos Cosmatos’ “Mandy” is the kind of pretentious horror thriller that will drive some folks crazy and others into throes of ecstasy. It’s a deliberately paced, ultraviolent, outlandishly stylish delivery system for Nicolas Cage’s wild-eyed acting style, and a thoughtful meditation about why Death Metal totally rules.
Cage stars as Red Miller, a logger and heavy-metal enthusiast who lives with a fantasy artist named Mandy Bloom (Andrea Riseborough). Their lives are peaceful, filled with dreamy glances over vast horizons, watching cheesy sci-fi movies on television and reading pulp fantasy novels at work.
Into their lives drives the Children of the New Dawn, a cult led by Jeremiah Sand, who drive past Mandy on her way to work. Jeremiah decides that since all the fruits of this world are his for the taking — and they are — then he must have Mandy,...

Beyond the Black Rainbow, the first feature from director Panos Cosmatos, quickly established the Italian-Canadian as a name to remember. With his follow-up Mandy, Cosmatos raises the bar. Anchored by a central performance from Nicolas Cage that is equal parts tender and furious, Mandy doubles down on Costmatos’ firm commitment to tone, while strengthening the emotional foundation amidst the swirl of colors and mayhem. Oozing like a dream that goes south, Mandy is a hallucinogenic vision of vengeance.
Ahead of the film’s opening this week, we sat down with Cosmatos to discuss crafting a tone and steady pace for Mandy to build emotions, recognizing different sides of Nicolas Cage to show on screen, finding commonalities with the late Jóhan Jóhansson during their collaboration, and shattering the delusional self-image of egomaniacal men.

There are some actors who aim for a sort of modest-to-Method-run-amuck realism — they want/need you to see every muscle straining in the name of disappearing into an everyman character, to prove they can turn the quotidian task of putting on socks into an elaborate tribute to commitment. There are some performers who prefer a more minimalist approach, for whom less-is-more is a mantra. And then there are others for whom no gesture is too broad or baroque, the kind who not only want to plays all the scales but...
