Cinephiles tend to be reluctant to call a new movie a favorite, instead favoring tried and true paradigms, but It Follows is a rare contemporary film that immediately struck a wide swath of viewers — myself included — as a modern classic upon its release in 2014. Comfortingly familiar yet invigoratingly fresh, I’ve only come to appreciate it more since, and Second Sight Films’ new 4K Ultra HD edition proves it hasn’t lost any staying power after nearly a decade.
The plot is deceptively simple: after a sexual encounter, 19-year-old Jay begins being followed by… something. The supernatural force takes a human form but never sticks to one for long; it could be a familiar face, an obscene stranger, or anyone in between. The only recourse seems to be passing it on to someone else via sexual intercourse. Otherwise, it will kill her, then the person who gave it to her,...

When a phone call from out of the blue brings Leo (Joey Millin) back into contact with his sister, Virginia (Madison West), long estranged from her family due to years of drug abuse, he arrives to find her alone in a bare apartment in the midst of an apparent overdose. After the convulsions and nausea subside, Virginia insists to Leo that she has been clean for 8 months due to the help of a mysterious group. She confides to her cynical brother that her edginess and paranoia actually stem from a sinister ritual conducted by the group that took her in at her lowest and eventually revealed themselves to be a cult. This curse bound her emotions and physical sensations to a man she has never met before.
With his marriage on the rocks, Leo has his own demons to face.

Hello, everyone! Throughout the month of April, I’m going to be offering up some streaming suggestions in support of our ongoing Indie Horror Month celebration, and today, we’re celebrating 13 different films that are currently streaming on Shudder. For this list, I tried to offer up some titles that have either been on the platform for a while now, so maybe they’ve gotten lost in the mix (since Shudder regularly updates their service with so much killer content), or they’ve generally just flown under the radar of most fans. So, while I absolutely adore movies like Host or Mandy, I felt like horror fans in general are already tuned in to those masterpieces, and I wanted to give a few other films a shot at glory here as well.

Universal Pictures left the industry in a state of wonder at CinemaCon when it announced “digital fur technology” was being used to turn the actors in Tom Hooper’s “Cats” musical adaptation into felines. What exactly would Idris Elba, Judi Dench, Jennifer Hudson, and Taylor Swift look like with digital fur added to their faces and bodies? That answer finally arrived with the debut of the “Cats” official trailer, and the reactions from film critics and journalists is overwhelming, to say the least.
“Cats” is based on Andrew Lloyd Webber’s long-running West End and Broadway musical of the same name. The story is set during a single night and follows a group of homeless cats called the Jellicles as they decide which cat will ascend to a place called the Heaviside Layer and come back to a new life. The musical was based on a collection of short stories written by T.S. Eliot.

The internet went into a predictable frenzy after news broke May 16 that Robert Pattinson had emerged as the leading contender to take over the role of Batman/Bruce Wayne in a new superhero tentpole from Matt Reeves. While the casting has not been made official by Warner Bros., Variety reports the hiring is all but confirmed as Pattinson “is the top choice and the deal is expected to close shortly.” Reeves’ Batman movie is going into pre-production this summer.
Pattinson’s casting sparked some backlash online from Batman lovers and fans of the DC Extended Universe who don’t think casting the “heartthrob from the ‘Twilight’ movies” is a smart idea for one of the most beloved comic book characters. Pattinson would join actors such as Michael Keaton, Christian Bale, and Ben Affleck in playing the Caped Crusader on the big screen. While some fans complained about the casting, many...

Fox News took heat Tuesday and Wednesday for comparatively slight coverage of Tuesday’s convictions of former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen and former campaign chair Paul Manafort.
While CNN, MSNBC and most of the national mainstream media dedicated wall-to-wall coverage, the story was curiously downplayed on Fox, with the channel’s opinions hosts suggesting the news was a nothingburger.
“The difference on a night like Tuesday: Fox’s pro-Trump shows acknowledge the news, yes, but they don’t give it the serious wall-to-wall coverage that it merits,” CNN’s media reporter Brian Stelter scolded in his evening newsletter. “Instead, the shows move on… to safer subjects like confederate statues and Dem ‘extremism’ and the VMAs.”

All eyes are on Chris Hardwick's wife Lydia Hearst after his ex-girlfriend Chloe Dykstra seemingly accused the Talking Dead host of physically and emotionally abusing her during their three-year relationship. While Lydia has yet to directly address the drama, she recently made it clear that she's always going to stand with her family. "To all of you trolls, I see that you are choosing to be unkind and hurtful," the Hearst heiress wrote on March 3 in response to unspecified criticism. "As I love myself and my family dearly, I choose not the participate in any negative behavior." She went on to explain that she would be blocking anyone who criticized her online from now on, and pinned the tweet to the top of her page (which she later removed). In light of recent accusations, people have rushed to the tweet to demand a comment from her. ♥️ #LoveOverHate pic.twitter.

While most of the world is excited about “Avengers: Infinity War” hitting theaters this weekend, Oscar-winning director James Cameron is hoping for superhero franchise fatigue soon.
“I’m hoping we’ll start getting ‘Avenger’ fatigue here pretty soon,” Cameron told IndieWire. “Not that I don’t love the movies. It’s just, come on guys, there are other stories to tell besides hyper-gonadal males without families doing death-defying things for two hours and wrecking cities in the process. It’s like, oy!”
Cameron is busy working on the next four films of the “Avatar” franchise, as well as the AMC sci-fi series “AMC Visionaries: James Cameron’s Story of Science Fiction.”

At least one film journalist had thoughts on Cameron’s sinister desire to see fewer Avengers at the movies:

— Scott Weinberg (@scottEweinberg) April 21, 2018
On Saturday, during a press event to promote the AMC series, Cameron said his upcoming “Avatar” sequels will have a story similar to “The Godfather” in that it will be a “generational family saga.”
He said that as a father of five, he imagined what “Avatar” would be like if it focused more on the families of the characters from the original film, which led him to think of Francis Ford Coppola’s legendary 1972 movie.

“Obviously very different genre, very different genre, but I got intrigued by that idea. So, that’s really what it is. It’s a generational family saga. And that’s very different from the first film,” he said. “It’s a continuation of the same characters, but what happen when warriors that are willing to go on suicide charges, and leap off cliffs on to the back of big orange toruks, what happens when they grow up and have their own kids? It becomes a very different story.”
“Avengers: Infinity War,” directed by the Russo brothers, will hit theaters on Friday. Other McU movies coming up include “Ant-Man and the Wasp,” “Captain Marvel” and another untitled Avengers film, as well as the next “Spider-Man” and “Guardians of the Galaxy” movies.

We’ve been writing about movies here on HeyUGuys for almost a decade. We’ve seen an enormous change in both the industry and the audience’s expectations of what is considered important. It’s fair to say that fifteen years ago there were very few ways to get into the business. Now with a website, a desire to be heard and some hard graft anyone can do it.
Self publishing has taken over the world, with millions of photos, texts, reviews and conversations published daily. The various pillars of social media encourage and elicit you to have your say, to be heard amongst the crowd. The questions we’re asked all the time have gone from ‘How do I become a film blogger?’ to ‘Ok, I’m a film blogger, how can I stand out?’

After spending the last several years directing historical dramas (“The Post,” “Lincoln”) and family adventures (“The Bfg,” “Tintin”), Steven Spielberg triumphantly returns to the world of science-fiction blockbusters in “Ready Player One.” The buzz online has been incredibly skeptical in the weeks leading up to the film’s March 28 release date, with many people criticizing the movie’s nostalgia-bait marketing, but it looks like Spielberg and Warner Bros. have nothing to worry about.
“Ready Player One” world premiered at SXSW on March 11 and the first reviews and reactions are incredibly positive. IndieWire’s own Eric Kohn called the film an “astonishing science-fiction spectacle” in his B+ review, and he’s hardly the only critic blown away by Spielberg’s relentless virtual-reality adventure.
The film, based on Ernest Cline’s 2011 novel, is set in a future where citizens escape from the real world by entering a virtual reality known as the Oasis.

Last night director Steven Spielberg held the world premiere of Ready Player One as SXSW and it sounds like it was quite an amazing movie-going experience for everyone in attendance! At one point during a climactic moment of the movie, the sound broke. A lot of people were joking that the movie was just so awesome that the sound system just couldn't handle the greatness.
Ready Player One just blew out at the speakers during a key battle scene. It’s that kind of movie. (Behind me, someone is explaining who Lena Waithe is.) This audience, riveted for the last 90 minutes, isn’t going anywhere. #sxsw

Sean Spicer may have been the most sought-after selfie at the 2017 Emmy Awards following his surprise appearance, but James Corden got some backlash for taking a photo where he jokingly kissed the former White House press secretary on the cheek.
Corden addressed the criticism on Monday’s episode of The Late Late Show — with humor.
“The big winners last night were Donald Glover, Hulu and former White House press secretary Sean Spicer,” the host said in his opening monologue. “Spicer won best actor in a comedy for his role in Donald Trump’s administration.”
He continued, “I’m kidding, of course.

Dario Argento’s most personal film is also his most insane.
According to Susan Sontag (as paraphrased by 80s All Over co-host Scott Weinberg), camp is defined is failed seriousness. That insight not only speaks volumes to what the Junkfood Cinema podcast admires about certain cult and b-movies, but also brings into sharp focus the bizarre paradox of Dario Argento’s 1985 psychic giallo thriller Phenomena; a movie so bizarre that most people don’t recognize how personal a film it was for its director…and how legitimately good it is.
Alias Creepers, Phenomena is the story of a young girl named Jennifer (played by Jennifer Connelly in one of her first on screen appearances) who comes to a boarding school in Switzerland just as a serial killer is butchering women in the area. Jennifer, it turns out, has the ability to communicate with insects which, in any other movie, would be the most unusual element. In...

Hey there, everyone! I sincerely hope this finds you all well (or at least coping) and eager (or at least willing) to take on a new year. I love doing year-end lists. For me, it’s a time of reflection, as well as expansion. Since I started with Daily Dead in April of 2015, my horror-view continues to grow; I’ve been so fortunate to meet and speak with some enduring legends of the genre, not to mention strike many new friendships through social media. But what my continuing immersion in this greatest of cultures has provided above all else is an appreciation for the variety and depth horror has to offer. It really has been a great year; unfortunately, I’ve missed some goodies, but dammit, I tried. So, without anymore ado whatsoever, here are a few (okay, a lot) of my favorite things from 2016.

There is no shortage of bad found footage movies that have plagued the horror genre since The Blair Witch Project exploded onto the scene in 1999. Thanks to that film’s massive success and subsequent redefining of the genre, anyone with two friends and a camcorder suddenly became a director of feature-length horror films, most of which consisted of 90 minutes of aimless picking around and bickering in the name of “conflict” until the camera shook and cut to black in the final moments. This is a fact not lost upon writer/director Steven DeGennaro in his debut feature, Found Footage 3D, a film that is a brilliant sendup of the subgenre, a loving tribute to found footage, and one of the best surprises in horror this year.

The horror genre had quite the year in 1986. Jason Voorhees climbed out of his coffin, scientist Seth Brundle tinkered with teleportation, two Tobe Hooper films were released in theaters, and Stephen King's directorial debut burned rubber on the big screen. In our new, free issue of Deadly Magazine, we revisit some of the genre's most memorable movies from that magical mid-’80s year with the people that helped make them. Welcome to the 30-year reunion for the Class of 1986.
Within the pages of this Deadly Magazine issue, you'll find retrospectives and interviews that shine spotlights on some of the most celebrated, and in some cases, underrated, films from 1986.
Scott Weinberg's interview with Barbara Crampton offers an intriguing look at the making of Stuart Gordon's other H.P. Lovecraft adaptation, From Beyond. Scott Drebit enrolls at Slaughter High to give his grade on the school-set slasher. Joseph Maddrey sits...

The actress, 30, recently revealed that she'd be interested in joining a superhero franchise, and in true Kendrick fashion, the heroine she wants to play is just as quirky as she is. "My brother sent me a Squirrel Girl comic because he thinks I should [play her]," she told Net A Porter. Tears running down his face, the seven-year-old said, "Stop, Daddy! Stop! I can't take it anymore!" Considering the strange holiday line-up that I shared with Toshi and Allen, ages ten and seven, it is little wonder it almost ended in tears. But what kind of tears and why is a little less cut and dry than I might have supposed when this recent run of programming first came together. I've been seeing someone for a little while now, and it's been nice. She's met the boys and they like her tremendously, and vice-versa. The Monday after the film opened, the four of us went to see The Force Awakens together, the second time for the kids, the first time for her, and it was a great evening. They were excited about the film, about the evening out, about Star Wars in general. She was the one who brought up The Star Wars Holiday Special...

Because the trailer was fucking awesome.

Guillermo Del Toro’s Crimson Peak premiered at Austin’s Fantastic Fest this past weekend, and while full reviews are embargoed until mid-October, the first reactions to the highly anticipated Gothic horror movie have surfaced on Twitter.
Pacific Rim was a movie which divided critics and even the most loyal of the filmmaker’s devoted fanbase, but it thankfully sounds like Crimson Peak is something of a return to form for Del Toro as he goes back to his roots. It’s odd then that Universal has decided to hold back reviews until so close to the movie’s release, but there have been reports of some behind the scenes issues (they refused to co-finance Crimson Peak with Legendary Pictures upon learning that it was going to be R-Rated), so that could explain why they’re not overly interested in giving it a huge push.

With War Room at number one last week and Straight Outta Compton number one the three previous weekends, films led by African-American casts have now led the box office for five consecutive weeks.
M. Night Shyamalan’s The Visit (review) was a close second with $25.7 million. The film sits at 62% on Rotten Tomatoes and presently has the biggest horror opening of 2015. Scott Weinberg (Nerdist) says, “the end result is the director’s best film in quite some time and represents a big win for M. Night Shyamalan.

One of the great things about having friends who are film nerds is that you end up having a lot of phone calls about nothing urgent. You end up talking about alternate theories and dream casting and things that might have been. I've got some other things I'll be posting tonight that speak to that, but first up, let's just play a little bit. The conversation I was having with Scott Weinberg today was about the way I find casting shortsighted in movies sometimes. In particular, I love comedians who push themselves, and Scott's article about Robin Williams (it would have been his birthday today, something that makes me unspeakably sad this year) focused on some of his left-of-center choices as an actor. Scott's fond of "Insomnia," where Williams gives some really good creepy, something that doesn't surprise me at all. Of course Williams was effective at playing dark and dangerous.

July 14th may not have a lot of genre-related titles arriving on DVD and Blu-ray, but the films making their home entertainment debuts this week are a rather stellar bunch nonetheless. For anyone who may have missed two of the best indie films this year in theaters—Ex Machina and It Follows—you’ll have a chance to catch up with both this coming Tuesday.
Scream Factory is also keeping busy this week with their high-def release of Philippe Mora’s cult classic, Howling II: Your Sister is a Werewolf, and they also have two double feature Blu-rays coming out as well. Severin Films has put together an extensive special edition release of the recent documentary Lost Soul, which follows the troubled production of Richard Stanley’s Island of Doctor Moreau and looks pretty incredible and for all you X-Men fans out there, the Rogue Cut version of Days...
