Cast: Hugo Weaving, Don Hany, Xavier Samuel, Robert Taylor, Anthony Hayes, Jane Menelaus
After 16 years in prison, Viktor Khadem (Don Hany) is a man who has almost given up on life.
For his final 18 months, he is sentenced to Won Wron, a low-security, rural prison where Senior Officer Matt Perry (Hugo Weaving) has established a unique program to rehabilitate broken men by giving them the responsibility for the rehabilitation of injured raptors – beautiful, proud eagles, falcons and owls. Against all odds, Matt takes on Viktor as his number one test case, introducing him to Yasmine, the majestic Wedge-tailed Eagle with a 2 metre wingspan. If these two can tame each other, anything is possible. Healing is a powerful, moving story of redemption, the discovery of hope and the healing of the spirit – in the most unlikely place, for the most unique men, through the most unusual catalyst.
Inspired by a true story, Healing is a new Australian feature film written and directed by Craig Monahan, the multi-award winning director of The Interview (selected for Montreal, Seattle, Flanders and 30 other international Festivals); and Winner of Best Film - Australian Film Institute Awards

If there was one stylistic trend at Venice this year, it was bravura, lengthy shots. The festival kicked off with the twenty-minute opening shot of "Gravity," and the rest of the festival sometimes felt like some kind of who-can-hold-a-shot the longest competition, with Steven Knight's "Locke" and Tsai Ming-Liang's "Stray Dogs" also getting in on the real-time act. But if this competition had a winner, it was undoubtedly Amos Gitai, with his latest film "Ana Arabia." Almost uniquely ("Russian Ark" is the obvious forerunner here), the film is made up of a single take, an unbroken 81-minute Steadicam shot without a single cut. It's a bold and ambitious move for the Cannes and Venice favorite, behind films like "Kadosh," "Kippur," "Promised Land" and "Free Zone," but while "Ana Arabia" is well-meaning, its central gimmick ultimately proves to be the only really interesting thing about it. Gitai's camera follows Yael...

★★★☆☆ No stranger to the Venice Lido, Amos Gitai's new film Ana Arabia (2013) - in competition this year - is a quiet exploration of love and tolerance in Israel. On the border between Jaffa and Bat Jam exists a small dusty enclave of Arabs and Jews. A young reporter, Yael (Yuval Scharf), arrives to question the inhabitants about a recently deceased resident, a Jewish woman who survived Auschwitz as a child and subsequently fled to Israel where she married an Arab and converted to Islam. Yael interviews her husband, Yussuf (Yussuf Abu-Warda), his daughter Miriam (Sarah Adler) and daughter-in-law Sarah (Assi Levy).
Everyone seem happy to tell Yael their stories and muse on the meaning of them, as well as occasionally having neighbours butt in to joke and/or flirt with the pretty journalist (or just to exchange gossip). The one outstanding feature of Gitai's Ana Arabia is that it...

israel's cultural battle over the rights of women came to a head this week when posters for popular new film The Dealers were altered at the last minute to remove images of its female stars. Yuval Scharf and Michal Gavrielov play key roles in the comedy about football-mad friends, but ultra-Orthodox Jews say that men looking at pictures of women is unacceptable.
The incident follows escalating tensions that have seen other film posters and adverts torn down, whilst there have been reports of assaults on girls going to school. Sex segregation is an established norm in many areas of Israeli society but, as mainstream public attitudes have begun to relax, ultra-Orthodox groups have sought to police it much more strictly.

Joseph Cedar‘s Footnote, winner of the Best Screenplay award at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival and one of four runners-up to Asghar Farhadi‘s A Separation for the most recent Best Foreign Language Film Oscar, is a curiously uneven depiction of a brewing father-son rivalry. It’s far from a smooth affair, in that the quite satirical comedic tone, while certainly contributing a unique humor, manages to liquify most of the potential for emotional epiphany. Patchy, too, is Cedar‘s tension within himself — as self-sufficiently word-driven as his screenplay is, he approaches the material with a very noticeable directorial personality, and it’s a decision that, creatively eager though it may be, produces mostly mixed results.
The familial pressure in Cedar‘s story stems from the opposite personalities with which the two main characters conduct themselves in the same profession — the study of Talmudic Research at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

Title: Footnote Sony Pictures Classics Review by: Harvey Karten Director: Joseph Cedar Screenwriter: Joseph Cedar Cast: Shlomo Bar-Aba, Lior Ashkenazi, Amiza Rosen, Micah Lewesohn, Alma Zack, Daniel Markovich, Yuval Scharf, Nevo Kimchi Screened at: Sony, NYC, 1/3/12 Opens: March 9, 2012 When Abraham seemed all-too-ready to sacrifice his son Isaac per heavenly command, we note that if he were living in our own modern times, he would be jailed for child abuse and not considered a hero for obeying the Almighty. Subjecting the intended sacrifice to free interpretation, we might conclude that the relationships of fathers to sons–especially given the updated work by Sigmund Freud–is not entirely beatific. While there...

Watch: Trailers for the 9 Shortlisted Best Foreign Oscar Contenders (Now With Convenient Subtitles!)
A little over a year after jailing and banning their most famous filmmaker from making movies, Iran might win an Academy Award for Best Picture. It would be a first for the nation whose government seems to strongly dislike creativity and freedom of speech, but its entry this year, A Separation, almost seems like a sure thing. Come February, writer/director Asghar Farhadi and Iran might be standing on the winner’s podium. But it’s not a done deal yet. A Separation and 8 other films were announced last week as part of the Oscar shortlist – just one step away from becoming an official nominee. They include a Danish comedy set in Argentina, a masculine drama about the underground world of illegal bovine growth hormones in Belgium, and something marvelous from Wim Wenders. It’s, to say the least, a varied group. Except that almost all of them are dramas from writer/directors. So...

Time for a story of insane competition, the admiration and envy for a role model, bringing father and son to a final, bitter confrontation.
That’s exactly a description of Footnote, Israeli drama directed by Joseph Cedar, that is, as you already know from our previous reports, scheduled to premiere In Competition at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. So check it out.
Footnote is “…the story of a great rivalry between a father and son. Both eccentric professors have dedicated their lives to their work. The father seems a stubborn purist who fears the establishment.
His son, Uriel, appears to strive on accolades, endlessly seeking recognition. But one day, the tables turn. The two men switch places when the father learns he is to be awarded the most valuable honour one can receive. His desperate need for recognition is betrayed, his vanity exposed. Uriel is torn between pride and envy.
