While many Republicans celebrated the Arizona Supreme Court declaring abortion “illegal” in the state on Tuesday, some of the party’s members who could be at risk of losing reelection in the Grand Canyon state opposed the decision — even if it meant changing their previously stated stance on the issue.
The most prominent was Maga U.S. Senate candidate Kari Lake, who criticized the law upheld by the state Supreme Court despite once calling it “great.” Lake also commended presumptive GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump’s remarks on abortion earlier this week,...

“This is not exactly the show we expected to do today,” said Warner Bros Discovery ad boss Jon Steinlauf in opening his company’s second Upfronts presentation as a merged company.
That is both an understatement and sums up the entire week. “It’s been a very weird week,” one network boss told Deadline.
While the focus of the upfronts has been increasingly moving to streaming, this year’s event highlighted the struggle that the linear broadcast networks have on the scripted side of the business. ABC unveiled an almost entirely unscripted schedule, Gordon Ramsay cooked up another show for Fox, becoming its lynchpin, CBS announced a fall schedule that could be decimated by the strike and The CW turned to international acquisitions and reality shows instead of superheroes.
As The CW President Dennis Miller said, “the young-adult audience is not making an appointment with broadcast television today.”

Donald Trump knows he needs media giants like Fox News and CNN to help him win back the White House in 2024. He’s been busy pushing them to bend to his will.
CNN is certainly complying. The network invited him to spend over an hour pushing lies to millions of viewers during a town hall event last Wednesday. Many within the network have criticized the decision to host the former president, with insiders describing it to Rolling Stone as everything from “appalling” to a “fucking disgrace.” Trump is still gloating about it.

CNN and CEO Chris Licht came in for ferocious criticism over the chaotic town hall the cable news network held with former president Donald Trump on Wednesday.
Amid his 2024 presidential campaign, Trump sat down with CNN This Morning anchor Kaitlan Collins at the event held in New Hampshire. The 70-minute town hall was populated by mostly Trump supporters and likely Republican voters, and the former president was able to dominate proceedings, overwhelming Collins who tried in vain to correct Trump’s statements and falsehoods about issues including the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, a federal abortion ban, immigration and the war in Ukraine.
A particularly shocking exchange occurred over E. Jean Carroll, who had this week been awarded $5 million in damages after a New York jury held Trump liable for sexual abuse and defamation against the writer. Among other things, Trump once again claimed he did not know who Carroll...

Fox, Comcast and Warner Bros Discovery shares each took a dip Monday after the media companies took turns generating industry-shaking headlines over less than 24 hours.
Comcast announced Sunday that NBCUniversal CEO Jeff Shell had left the company due to an inappropriate relationship with a colleague. Fox and Wbd on Monday delivered equally stunning news they had parted ways with prominent hosts Tucker Carlson of Fox News and Don Lemon of CNN, respectively.
The three stocks fell between 1% and 3%, with Fox taking the biggest hit to close at $32.64, while Comcast finished at $37.21 and Wbd at $13.36. Trading volume was light for Wbd and Comcast, but more than three times heavier than normal levels for Fox. The overall media sector was mostly in the red on a day when the broader markets were close to break-even.
The three bits of news have distinct implications for the respective financial outlooks of each entity. Fox,...

Just months after launch, “CNN This Morning” executive producer Eric Hall is leaving the top slot of the rebooted a.m. program hosted by Don Lemon, Poppy Harlow and Kaitlin Collins.
A network insider told TheWrap that during a meeting today the staff of “CNN This Morning” was informed by Ryan Kadro, CEO Chris Licht’s No. 2, that Hall would be exiting the program and moving to ‘CNN Tonight’ hosted by Laura Coates.
As TheWrap previously reported, Licht is in desperate need of solid results that can win over the trust of a weary and wary staff who have been shaken by the changes he has made since taking over the news network last spring under new corporate owner Warner Bros. Discovery.

Update, 11:34 Pm Pt: Joe Biden wrapped up his first formal press conference, lasting about an hour, by telling the reporters gathered, “But folks, I’m going.”
Very quickly, Fox News keyed into the fact that Biden did not call on its White House correspondent, Peter Doocy, who was in the East Room, even as Biden called on reporters from the other major networks.
“Peter Doocy was not given a question, which is of note as well,” said Fox News’ Martha MacCallum, as the chyron read, “Biden signed 37 EOs but holds just 1 news conf.”
News outlets called upon during the press conference: Associated Press, PBS, The Washington Post, ABC News, The Wall Street Journal, NBC News, CBS News, CNN, Bloomberg and Univision. A typical press conference features reporters from across the country, including a number from lesser known news outlets, but Covid-19 restrictions limited the number of correspondents allowed in the room.

“I got elected to solve problems,” Joe Biden said today in response to the first question at his first solo press conference as President. “All I know is I’ve been hired to solve problems, not create division,” he staunchly added, laying down again that there is a new kind of Potus in the White House after Donald Trump.
“I want to change the paradigm,” the well calibrated and well prepped president proclaimed of his ambitions for the nation.
The AP had the first question in the just over 62-minute long affair that ranged from timely topics of the Covid-19 health crisis, the just passed $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan, the surge at the southern border, and filibuster reform in the Senate. Following a week that saw mass shootings in Atlanta and Bolder, gun control was on the press conference agenda too, as was a large infrastructure package, withdraw from the forever war in Afghanistan,...

Donald Trump again held a press briefing focused on the coronavirus crisis, and he again went solo: No Vice President Mike Pence, who is leading the White House task force on the pandemic, and no medical experts.
Asked by CNN’s Kaitlin Collins on Wednesday why they were not present, Trump said, “They are briefing me. I am meeting them. I just spoke to Dr. [Anthony] Fauci. Dr. [Deborah] Birx is right outside. And they are giving me everything they know as of this point in time and I am giving the information to you, and it seems to be a very concise way of doing it. It seems to be working out very well.”
Fauci is the longtime director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, and Birx is the coronavirus response coordinator for the White House task force.

President Trump was scheduled to give the annual State of the Union address on January 29th. That’s no longer happening.
As the government continues to operate under a partial shutdown, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-ca) on Wednesday uninvited the president from delivering the address. Pelosi wrote that expending government resources to ensure the event’s security would be inappropriate considering that both the Secret Service and the Department of Homeland Security are currently without funding. “Sadly, given the security concerns and unless the government re-opens this week, I suggest...

Bill Shine was known as an enforcer during his time as an executive at Fox News, which ended with his unceremonious departure from the network in May 2017.
Since joining Donald Trump's White House as deputy chief of staff in charge of communications earlier this month, Shine has channeled his late boss Roger Ailes, overseeing a crackdown on the press that came to a head on Wednesday.

Updated with video of Collins asking the questions: The White House has begun banning reporters.
The White House today barred Kaitlin Collins from attending a Rose Garden event, to punish her for questions she asked when she was acting as White House pool reporter. They were “inappropriate,” the White House sniffed.
[You can hear her asking the questions in the video, above, at around 1:25]
Collins was hauled into the principal’s office, aka sat down in front of White House media wrangling chief/former Fox News bigwig Bill Shine. Also in attendance was Sarah Huckabee Sanders, when Collins was informed of her “disinvitation” to the Rose Garden clambake with European Commission President Jean-Clause Juncker.
No, Collins did not ask him to prove he was born in this country by producing his longform birth certificate, which would be an outrageous thing to do, even if he is orange.
Here is what Collins did ask Trump:
“Did Michael Cohen betray you, Mr. President?”
