Exclusive: Sony Pictures Classics has come away with North American rights to Paris Can Wait, the film that marks the narrative directorial debut — at age 80 — of Eleanor Coppola, who wrote the script as well and produced. Her film stars Diane Lane, Arnaud Viard and Alec Baldwin. Lane plays an American woman in a tired marriage who finds herself on an unforeseen road trip from Cannes to Paris with a dashing Frenchman. A seven-hour drive unexpectedly takes two days with many diversions.
Coppola is the wife of Francis Ford Coppola, and she directed the famed documentary Heart o Darkness: A Filmmaker’s Apocalypse. She waited a long time to make her narrative feature debut, but the film drew high marks for its potential with a female demo. It premiered September 12 at the Toronto Film Festival at the Winter Garden Theatre.

Hulu has made its first significant acquisition of a festival film, joining Lionsgate on North American rights to Jeff Baena’s recent Sundance world premiere.
The deal marks the arrival on the acquisitions scene of another major digital force after well-documented seismic forays by Netflix and Amazon Prime.
Insiders had been predicting for some time that the streaming service known primarily for TV would make a move into film acquisition.
Hulu has a non-exclusive deal with Epix and announced an exclusive documentary output partnership with IFC in Park City, however this marks the first time it has acquired a feature, rather than merely licensed streaming rights.
Hulu, which has brought on more staff of late and expanded its headquarters in Santa Monica’s so-called Silicon Beach, will stream Joshy exclusively after the theatrical run on Lionsgate’s specialty label Lionsgate Premiere.

Equal measures irritably supercilious and demonically brilliant, our introduction to this filmmaker came via his co-writing gig: 2004’s I Heart Huckabees. Fast forward a decade later, and Jeff Baena broke into Sundance’s U.S. Dramatic section with zom rom com (short of zombie romantic comedy). Starring girlfriend Aubrey Plaza, Life After Beth wasn’t as secretive as his follow up film. Not appearing on any radars, production wrapped up on Joshy in April, so this comedy is definitely ready to go out. List of players includes: Thomas Middleditch, Adam Pally, Alex Ross Perry, Nick Kroll, Brett Gelman, Jenny Slate, Lauren Graham, Aubrey Plaza, Joe Swanberg, Kris Swanberg, Alison Brie, Paul Weitz, Brian Patrick Farrell, Jake Johnson and Frankie Shaw.

In this weekend’s specialty box-office debuts, IFC Films hopes to replicate the critical and commercial success of Michael Winterbottom’s first amusing little travelogue/talker of a feature, The Trip, with a semi-sequel, The Trip To Italy. The second Trip again stars Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon; the entertainingly garrulous pair on yet another jaunt across restaurants, countryside and philosophy. The latest Trip will bow in NYC and La this weekend after a successful Australian run earlier this summer (or their winter).

A24 has closed a deal for the U.S. rights to Sundance romantic zombie movie Life After Beth. There is a DirecTV component to the deal in which the satellite provider has an exclusive 30-day window prior to any theatrical release. Photos: Sundance: THR's Instagram Photos Beth, starring Dane DeHaan and Aubrey Plaza, centers on a teen who gets a second chance at love when his dead girlfriend returns. But it's not all as rosy as he thinks. John C. Reilly and Paul Reiser also appear. Jeff Baena, who co-wrote I Heart Huckabees, wrote and directed. Michael Zakin and Elizabeth Destro are producers.

Exclusive: A24 is hot on the trail of its third film acquisition of the Sundance Film Festival. I’m hearing the label is near a deal for U.S. rights to Life After Beth, a Jeff Baena-written and -directed comedy that stars Aubrey Plaza, John C. Reilly, Dane DeHaan, Paul Reiser, and Anna Kendrick. This is going down as part of a deal for international territories that will bring the price to around $3.5 million for all the deals. It includes a DirectTV component that is part of A24′s partnership. The logline: Zach is devastated by the unexpected death of his girlfriend, Beth. When she mysteriously returns, he gets a second chance at love as his world is upended. Wme Global and CAA repped the film, which is in the U.S. Dramatic Competition and made its debut last Sunday at the Library Theatre. Xyz is brokering the foreign deals.

A huge ensemble cast of indie vets (Anna Kendrick, Aubrey Plaza, Matthew Gray Gubler, Dane DeHaan, Alia Shawkat, John C. Reilly, Cheryl Hines, Paul Reiser, Molly Shannon). Check. A promising directorial debut from someone who previously made a name for himself with a cult screenplay (I Heart Huckabees). Check. Zombies. Check. You can always count on a horror-comedy to crack the Park City at Midnight line-up and Life After Bet certainly fills in that gap. Filming on Jeff Baena’s debut occurred in July, and recent Afm art proves that they’re deep into the post production phase, so chances are relatively good for a possible January showing. If so, this will be a hot sales item ticket for several indie distribution companies.

The X Files creator is set to write and direct. I hear comedy The Outlaws, written by Jeremy Garelick and Jon Weinbach, is eying an October start date contingent on locking in a director. Though she may have a limited number of films to her credit (only putting things out about every three years), Sofia Coppola is on the very short list of my favorite working directors. Not only is she responsible for one of my favorite films, but I even loved Somewhere, which threw people for a loop, and certainly didn’t resonate with audiences generally. Coming off the heels of that film and Marie Antoinette, which overall performed as bad with audiences and worse among critics, Coppola needs a boost to her status in the collective consciousness.
If a massive surge of hype surrounding a teaser counts for anything, she is apparently well on her way to getting that boost. Of course, the movie is going to have to actually do well, but this looks to have all the elements needed to at least outperform her last two efforts at the box office.
