Amid a generally positive market the familiar gripe of high asking prices has sent a clear message that buyers and sellers are finding it increasingly tough to reconcile their respective financial models.
The tension remains particularly acute on A-list market packages, where independent producers have fought (and paid) to attract and hold on to talent in a post-strike world where hefty offers from studios and streamers, driven by talent agents, have been hard to resist.
The ripple effect has forced sales agents to push up their asks in order to recoup financiers’ investments. Sales estimates set more than a year ago,...

The Hollywood strikes and the new location have been hot topics for buyers and sellers in the build-up to this year’s AFM.
Prior to news landing this weekend that the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and AMPTP have reached a tentative agreement to end the 146-day writer’s strike, US sellers were busy future-proofing the AFM should both Hollywood strikes still be in full force by the time the market kicked off on October 31.

After a rain-soaked start the sun came out for the second week of Cannes, mirroring how business and deal-making brightened as the festival progressed.

After the exuberance of the Cannes market in May and the disappointment that some experienced at Toronto, this week’s American Film Market is expected to settle into a much more familiar range.
If “new normal” is one of those phrases that has lost its meaning through overuse, the AFM this year is expected to operate at something approaching “near normal.”
“Cannes was an experiment for many folks. This is the market that people are coming to in order to do business. You can feel it in the way that we’re approaching it,” says Jean Prewitt.
“Everybody is still enthusiastic. And for problem areas, they’ll tell you that costs are going up. They’re not sure about whether or not they can have a theatrical release. But the rules are still the same. You have to have the quality of content and the talent. And somebody’s going to want to buy it.

Producers, studio executives and agents are hoping that when they touch down in Canada this week for the Toronto International Film Festival, things will look a lot like they did in 2019. That was the last time that the annual celebration of all things movies was at full capacity, with star-studded red carpets, packed premieres and the kind of late-night parties and boozy dinners that help grease the wheels for dealmaking. Covid changed all of that, leading to a nearly three-year hiatus for one of the major hubs of film sales and awards season launches. Last year, TIFF returned in-person, but at limited capacity, and most Hollywood players skipped it. But this time, the film industry is returning in force, hoping to sell movies, spot talent and make sense of a landscape that’s been altered by the global pandemic.

Once upon a time in Hollywood, the largest film library ever amassed in the world belonged to none other than Netflix. More than 100,000 DVD titles offered by the streamer equaled an unmatched cinematic treasure trove back in 2010. That luminous library has been slashed by more than 85% to some 15,000 titles today, with typical members having access to just 4,000 films today.
That shift shows that the strategic role and value of film libraries and the licensing of movie rights through second and third cycles and beyond, has been caught up in the seismic shifts afoot across the industry. Key tenets that dictated longer term ancillary values have vanished, while free-to-air TV has taken the biggest hit, especially in North America.
Even Amazon’s recent purchase of MGM’s 4,000-strong film library plus 17,000 TV hours for $8.45 billion failed to excite media commentators, given the market’s current obsession with brand-new content, rather than what’s gone before.
