Plot: John Sugar is an American private investigator on the heels of the mysterious disappearance of Olivia Siegel, the beloved granddaughter of legendary Hollywood producer Jonathan Siegel. As Sugar tries to determine what happened to Olivia, he will also unearth Siegel family secrets; some very recent, others long-buried.
Review: Detective stories and noir films are iconic genres in film and literature. Who doesn’t love a grizzled private eye who saves the girl and beds the femme fatale? From The Maltese Falcon to Chinatown, detectives have a long and storied history on screen. With the new series Sugar, Colin Farrell adds another great character to the list. A suave, calm, and skilled investigator, John Sugar is an idealized hero straight off the silver screen. And, like any number of great cinematic detectives, he has a weakness. Having seen the full eight episodes of Sugar, audiences will love or hate John Sugar’s weakness,...

Few actors stack up against the greatness of Colin Farrell. The Irish actor rose to the top of Hollywood but struggled with alcohol and drugs. His comeback, beginning in 2008’s In Bruges, has resulted in an over fifteen-year run of greatness. As the lead of Sugar, a new series from Apple TV+, Farrell once again shines. Through empathy and kindness, he makes Sugar a uniquely human show. Yet, on occasion, the show dips into style over substance. It’s a huge win for Apple TV+ and for Noir fans everywhere.
Sugar – The Plot
The titular John Sugar (Farrell) works as a private investigator, focusing on missing persons cases. His techniques are odd, and his partner Ruby (Kirby) demands he take a break. Despite a well-earned vacation, Sugar cannot resist a call from Jonathan Siegel (James Cromwell), a famed Hollywood producer. However, Siegel’s granddaughter Olivia has gone missing. Despite drug abuse in her past,...

The hoodie has as much to say about it’s wearer as, say, the white t-shirt does. By which I mean that, depending on context, it can say anything. The white t-shirt can imply clean, erotic, the worker – or a combination of all three. In the eyes of contemporary media, the hoodie largely suggests youth. Shady youth, someone not keen to reveal their identity because they are planning on robbing you or worse. Put the hoodie on a black man and it is pretty much akin to walking down the street in a striped jumper with a sack marked ‘swag’. Luke Cage is not set to change that perception, but it does make us reevaluate the role of the hoodie on screen. For the first time in a long time, perhaps ever, a black man in a hoodie in Harlem is not a suspect. In fact he’s a goddamn hero.

Austin, TX- – Mondo is excited to unveil the soundtrack for Marvel’s Luke Cage with collectible artwork of the bulletproof hero by Matthew Woodson. Composers Adrian Younge (Something About April) and Ali Shaheed Muhammad (A Tribe Called Quest) have combined forces to produce one of the best scores of 2016 featuring an inspired, genre-bending blend of orchestral score and 90s hip-hop beats, filtered through the sonic lens of the works of Ennio Morricone.
It’s no surprise that the score hovers in the same terrain of the Spaghetti Western soundtracks of Morricone – the narrative of Luke Cage plays out like a modern Western, only set in Harlem. Younge and Muhammad have meticulously crafted one of the most unique sonic landscapes in the history of television.

Just like Daredevil & Jessica Jones before it, Marvel's Luke Cage premiered to rave reviews last week and even managed to shut down Netflix for a few hours on its first day, which is just what the Power Man ordered. It will contain fifty-one original compositions from Adrian Younge & Ali Shaheed Muhammed and will also contain tracks from Raphael Saadiq, Faith Evans, Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, and Charles Bradley. Marvel’s latest Netflix series Luke Cage debuted this weekend, to high expectations. So far, the previous Marvel Netflix shows have been outstanding. Does Luke Cage continue the high quality trend? The answer is…mostly yes, but with reservations. Beware of Spoilers!
Marvel’s previous Netflix shows Daredevil (both seasons) and Jessica Jones have far exceeded the quality of the many network superhero TV shows that currently air. Daredevil in particular has raised the bar to new levels. That being the case, fan expectations for Luke Cage were sky high, especially after the positive response Mike Colter got for his debut of the character on Jessica Jones. Does it deliver? Yes…for the most part. It’s no Daredevil but it’s entertaining.

Update: Buoyed by the initial critical response, Netflix has now rolled out a new clip for Luke Cage showcasing Mike Colter’s Power Man putting some goons in check. Have at it above!
Original story: The premiere has been dated, the episode titles are out in the open, and showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker has been busy championing the musical tenets of Marvel’s new standalone series – yes, Luke Cage is barrelling down on its anticipated debut and already, the first wave of reviews are beginning to pour online.
They are, in short, overwhelmingly positive, and though in time they will only represent a small portion of the critical consensus, Marvel and Netflix could well have another hit on their hands when it comes to Mike Colter’s Hero for Hire.

Luke Cage lacks the eye-popping martial arts choreography of Daredevil or the heart-pounding psychological terror of Jessica Jones. The night-time seediness of the Marvel’s fictional version of Hell’s Kitchen is replaced by the summery daytime promises of NYC’s resurgent Harlem neighbourhoods. But like its predecessors, Luke Cage boasts an excellent cast, tremendous atmosphere, and a willingness to go places that other Marvel Studios productions can’t. And it brings a few fun twists to the party, too.

Ahead of the September 30th arrival of Luke Cage, Netflix has unveiled a minute-long clip featuring the Harlem superhero with bulletproof skin that soon joins the streaming service's expanding Marvel universe.
Cage, portrayed by Mike Colter, previously showcased his super strength and impenetrable skin during a multi-episode run on Netflix's Jessica Jones, and in this scene from Luke Cage, the towering superhero uses those assets in a face-off with the criminal underworld that takes place, fittingly enough, in a boxing gym.

A Tribe Called Quest's Ali Shaheed Muhammad has been hired to create the musical score for Marvel's Luke Cage Netflix series with composer and producer Adrian Younge. I'm already excited for Luke Cage, but getting Shaheed Muhammad to help write the score is pretty awesome. I'm a big fan of the hip hop group who released their first album in 1991. These guys helped change hip hop music and take it to a new level.
Luke Cage showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker confirmed the collaboration with Entertainment Weekly, saying:
“It’s very sophisticated. I mean, it’s got a ’90s hip-hop vibe, but it’s really forward-thinking. We have Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad doing the scoring for us.”
I can't wait to hear what they've come up with for the series. It sounds like it will have that classic hip hop vibe that fans of A Tribe Called Quest love.

Part and parcel of the success enjoyed by Marvel across its film and TV slate can be traced back to the way in which the studio tethers different releases to a variety of genres. Think how Ant-Man was likened to a heist movie, or even James Gunn’s ability to craft Guardians of the Galaxy into a rip-roaring space opera.
Variety is the spice of the Marvel universe, and though it would be foolish to claim those release are above reproach, there’s no denying that that diversity has helped maintain a steady stream of successful releases. With Daredevil season 2 now out on the streets of Hell’s Kitchen, next up for Marvel’s TV line is the Luke Cage solo series, welcoming back Mike Colter as the Hero for Hire after a recurring role in Jessica Jones.

Kendrick Lamar made a surprise cameo at an Adrian Younge concert in Los Angeles this weekend, debuting a new song called "Money Over Love." This is the first new song Lamar’s performed since his brilliant To Pimp a Butterfly came out in March. Though it's difficult to figure out exactly what Lamar is saying (pitfalls of iPhone quality), you can definitely hear "Money Over Love" repeated during the chorus, while backup singers harmonize. It's another soulful song that turns hip-hop on its head, as Lamar is wont to do. The song may appear on the upcoming Bilal LP (on which Younge appeared) In Another Life, Rolling Stone reports. You can watch some clips of the performance below.

It's hard to top Lena Dunham and J.K. Simmons playing Pictionary but Ghostface Killah managed to become the must-see moment on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon thanks to a riveting performance of his 36 Seasons single, "Love Don't Live Here No More." Joined by singer Kandace Springs and Brooklyn band-production team the Revelations, Ghostface breathes new life into the track about a man who returns to Staten Island after a nine-year prison stint to find his girl shacking up with a new man.

In April, Ghostface Killah partnered with composer Adrian Younge on Twelve Reasons To Die, an album-length narrative that showcased Ghostface's love of gritty B-movies and revenge fantasies, and now Black Mask Studios is offering up a companion piece to the album in the form of the Twelve Reasons To Die comic series. Writers Patrick Kindlon and Matthew Rosenberg constructed a six-issue arc that sees a veritable who's-who of illustrators contributing art, with Breno Tamura (Pigs) and Gus Storms (Space Creep) kicking off the first issue. Twelve Reasons To Die doesn't rehash the album's success. Instead, it ...

5) Veronica Falls “Waiting For Something To Happen”
Before I talk about this video I want to take a moment to mention the video that almost made this spot. An awesome Record Store Day release from Screaming Females and Garbage, it’s a great cover but this Veronica Falls video is just more interesting. “Waiting For Something To Happen” offers a fast-paced black-and-white montage of nature and close-ups of the band members’ faces. It’s also got a lovely vintage feel to it.
4) Ghostface Killah & Adrian Younge “Rise of the Ghostface Killah”
Directed by Adrian Younge
The video for “Rise of the Ghostface Killah” partially takes place in an old church and though the part of Killah is not played by Killah the video is still engaging and creepy. The only way I can describe what happens in the video is 70s Satanic cults and murderous revenge.

Twelve Reasons to Die is the tenth studio album from founding Wu Tang Clan member Ghostface Killah. It is a concept album based on a comic book of the same name, it is based around Ghostface Killah’s alter ego, Tony Starks as he reads the comic and writes songs to it. The story is set in 1960s Italy, in which Starks fights against a crime organization, falls in love with the kingpin’s daughter, and seeks revenge when he is murdered. The album is entirely produced and composed by Adrian Younge, and executive produced by the RZA.
The album was released on April 16, 2013 by the RZA’s Soul Temple record label. It is a relatively short album made up of 12 tracks and coming in at just under forty minutes. Ghostface has been my favourite Wu member since he dropped his first solo album prior to...

-- Ghostface Killah and Adrian Younge, "Twelve Reasons to Die" (Soul Temple/Red Distribution)
"Twelve Reasons to Die" unites Wu-Tang Clan vet Ghostface Killah with Adrian Younge, one of music's brightest young composers. The album's 12 cinematic tracks trace the trials of a masked Mafioso who is resurrected after his remains are pressed into a dozen vinyl LPs.
Playing like a graphic novel, the Ghostface persona jumps off the page. But aside from the requisite gear gloating (lion skin Wallabees, Black Panther hoodie made of panther skin), his signature impromptu patois is all but absent. Instead, Ghost is in the type of pure storyteller mode last heard on the breakneck hood-noir of his song "Shakey Dog."
Ghost's controlled and committed wordplay is the ideal accommodation for Younge's lush accompaniments. Probably best known for composing the score of the classic Blaxploitation spoof "Black Dynamite," an emphasis on stuttering organs and bleating brass carries over here,...

Wu-Tang Clan stalwart Ghostface Killah has announced his latest album, the grimly titled "12 Reasons to Die." "Black Dynamite" composer Adrian Younge produced the set, while Ghostface's Wu-Tang associate the RZA executive produced. Expect some notable guest stars to appear on the album. To make an event out of the release, a comic book relating to the album is launching in December. Gfk is also planning a release of a "Supreme Clientele" sequel sometime next year. His last solo album was 2010's acclaimed "Apollo Kids." As a group, Wu-Tang Clan have reportedly been working on a new studio album, following up 2011's...

In 1971 African American film director Melvin Van Peebles had a Richard Pryor moment. Fed up with presenting an acceptable version of blackness for The Man he figured it was time for something more confrontational. Something that would have the early 70's audience leaving the theatre thinking 'fuck yeah'. Essentially, a film that would stick it to The Man. Studios however where unlikely to want to fund such an outing. Having convinced a then relativity unknown group called Earth, Wind and Fire to record a soundtrack, Melvin took the innovative move of releasing the soundtrack in advance of the movie. Not only did this raise capital it also promoted the movie in a way his non existent marketing budget would not have allowed. The film was Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song. While arguably not Blaxsploitation as such itself, it paved the way for the birth of the genre. There was a market for confrontational,...

If you've read the latest issue (or run into me recently) you know that I dig the blaxploitation spoof, Black Dynamite. From its straight face acting to the way it was shot, director Scott Sanders (aka Suckapunch) and star Michael Jai White have created an impressive comedy that aesthetically holds up to most of the real blaxploitations of the 70s and puts a shot in the arm of the recently watered down spoof genre. But one of Dynamite's greatest aspects is its music. The film's editor, Adrian Younge, created the original score through the use of instruments and analog recording equipment from the era the film is based in. He explains how he did this in a sidebar to our Black Dynamite feature in the Fall issue. But below is a promo of the...

Anytime we've looked at clips or trailers for Black Dynamite, which is now in select theaters, we've always mentioned how authentic it looks, sounds, and feels, given that it was made almost 40 years after the films it spoofs/pays homage to.
In the movie, Michael Jai White plays a former CIA agent whose brother is killed by The Man, who is also responsible for funneling heroin into local orphanages and flooding the ghetto with "a secret weapon disguised as common malt liquor." It's like it's ripped from the newspapers, isn't it?
Here's a pretty interesting video from Wax Poetics about one of the major components of turning a contemporary movie into a believable blaxploitation flick from the early 70s: The soundtrack by first-time film composer Adrian Younge. Check it out.
