The Movie: "Sex Appeal"
Where You Can Stream It: Hulu
The Pitch: High school senior Avery Hansen-White (Mika Abdalla) excels in every area of academics. With a laundry list of extracurricular activities, philanthropy efforts, and a 5.00 Gpa, she's ready to take MIT by storm next year. But first, rather than focusing on the time-honored tradition of the senior prom, she chooses to conquer her "nerd prom" instead: a scientific competition that offers the winner a fellowship that sets them up for life.
Thanks to this year's STEMcon prompt, Avery must create an app that solves a problem in her personal life, which is something that she hasn't cultivated since she's preoccupied with academic milestones instead of "superfluous" ones. After finding...

With both title and central buddy dynamic tipping hat to “Superbad,” among other raunchy teen comedies, “Supercool” is not the kind of movie that wins prizes for originality. Nor is Finnish director Teppo Airaksinen’s first U.S.-shot, English-language project as outrageous as it thinks it is. Nonetheless, this energetic spin through high school antics redolent of everything since “Ferris Bueller” is colorful and amusing enough to entertain viewers looking for a familiar mix of bad-taste gags in a squeaky-clean suburban setting. Vertical Entertainment is releasing it to 20 U.S. theater screens as well as on-demand platforms Feb. 11.
Things commence with an over-the-top action sequence in which Neil (Jake Short) rescues classmate Summer (Madison Davenport) from the clutches of a masked maniac after she’s abducted from their school bus. But this turns out to be one more fantasy from Neil’s vivid imagination, which he channels into the...

Faced with a series of dead-end job interviews, Emily soon finds herself seduced by the quick cash and illicit thrills of black-market capitalism, and increasingly interested in her mentor Youcef. Together, they hatch a plan to bring...

Welcome to this week’s “Just for Variety.”
Paris Jackson has a few acting credits under her belt. The 23-year-old daughter of the late Michael Jackson has appeared on television shows “Star,” “Scream: The TV Series” and “American Horror Stories.” On the film side, we’ve seen her in “Gringo” with Charlize Theron as well as indies “The Space Between” and “Habit.”
But it’s her work in “Sex Appeal,” Hulu’s new coming-of-age movie, which is about a brainy high schooler (Mika Abdalla) who tries preparing for a night with her long-distance boyfriend by experimenting with her best friend (Jake Short), that may get Jackson the most attention yet. She plays Danica, a classmate known for her expertise around the bedroom. “Danica is rad. "I think we can call today's experiment a success!" Hulu has revealed an official trailer for Sex Appeal, a romantic comedy movie made for the streaming service. It's opening this January, which is not the best time to drop this but it also might find its audience streaming online anyway. Avery is a teenager with a tendency towards perfectionism who enlists her friend Larson to help her prepare for her first time with her long-distance boyfriend. In this hilarious teen comedy, Avery’s study results in the realization that there’s more to sex, and love, than mechanics. Relationships require both head and heart. Starring Mika Abdalla, Jake Short, Mason Versaw, Paris Jackson, Margaret Cho, Fortune Feimster, Rebecca Henderson, Tate Hanyok, Hayden Szeto, and Artemis Pebdani. This looks like some good fun discussing sex and opening up the conversation in a smart and confident way. Campy but it all kinda works?...

"Of course your life's a mess, you're a teenager!" Vertical Entertainment has revealed an official trailer for a romantic comedy, teen road trip movie called This Is the Year, marking the feature directorial debut of actor David Henrie, who partnered with his "Wizards of Waverly Place" cast-mate Selena Gomez to make this. As fun as it may be, this year and last year don't seem like "this year" unfortunately, especially with regards to a music festival. In a last ditch effort to win over the girl of his dreams, a nerdy high school senior and his best friends embark on a road trip to see their favorite band at the biggest music festival of the year. Lorenzo Henrie co-stars in this with his brother David Henrie, joined by Gregg Sulkin, also an alumna of "Wizards of Waverly Place", along with Vanessa Marano, Jake Short, Jeff Garlin, Alyssa Jirrels, and Bug Hall.

David Henrie is making his feature-film directorial debut with Bold Entertainment's This Is the Year, and he has a few familiar faces joining him for the ride. The comedy, which Henrie also wrote, follows a high school senior (played by his brother Lorenzo) as he attempts to win over his longtime crush by embarking on a road trip to see their favorite band at a musical festival. What ensues is an action-packed adventure filled with some surprising self-realizations.
When writing the script, the 31-year-old actor was especially inspired by '80s coming-of-age movies he grew up watching. Selena Gomez and David Henrie Reunite for Bold Entertainment’s Debut Feature Film ‘This Is The Year’
Bold Entertainment and Novo Media Group, LLC, are pleased to announce the first-ever, interactive, virtual movie premiere on August 28th for their first film, This Is The Year.
The film is directed by David Henrie, with his longtime friend Selena Gomez signing on as Executive Producer. The one-night-only event brings the two former co-stars of Wizards of Waverly Place back together and adds many more next-generation stars in the cast and throughout the live event.
This Is The Year is a contemporary spin on many of the classic 80’s movies that resonated with that era’s youth. It aims to address the issues facing teens today – high school friendships, romances, escapades, change and more – speaking their language and breaking through with a story that actually means something.

"Is there something you want to confess?" Rlje Films has debuted a full trailer for an indie psychological thriller titled Confessional, made by filmmaker Brad T. Gottfred (Orgies and the Meaning of Life). This originally premiered at the Chattanooga Film Festival last year, and is already streaming on Shudder if you want to catch it now. After two seemingly unconnected deaths at a college on the same night, seven students receive invitations to a confessional booth hidden on campus. Uh oh... Their confessions slowly unveil the truth behind the deaths and the mysterious person who brought all of them to the booth. Confessional stars Marcus Scribner, Vanessa Marano, Lucas Adams, Jess Gabor, Brandon Larracuente, Jake Short, Annalisa Cochrane, Paris Berelc, and Mia Xitali. This is a cool concept, but it's not easy to pull this off as a film. From the looks of it, this will certainly by suspenseful. I...

When you’ve had a big hit, it’s often all anybody wants from you. To artists, that level of success can feel like a trap. Fearful that the breadth of their creative genius may go unacknowledged, a singer might spend years trying to shake off a number one single, turning their back on requests for the old stuff and attempting to captivate fans with their Fresh New Sound. In such instances, results vary.
A saner alternative is to embrace what made that success happen, and try to repeat it. That’s what The Inbetweeners creators Damon Beesley and Iain Morris have done in new BBC sitcom The First Team. Bar the cast, they’ve got the old band back together – the same writer-directors uniting with the same script editor and executive producer under the same comedy controller. Instead of breaking the mould and wasting energy simply to demonstrate versatility,...

Two magpies are fighting to the death outside Damon Beesley’s window. The violence is distracting him from the task in hand. “It’s just too much to ignore,” he tells Den of Geek, breaking off from an anecdote about the filming of new BBC football sitcom The First Team.
“Very Partridge that, by the way,” says his writing partner Iain Morris. “Super Partridge.”
Joining us on the call from La, Morris doesn’t have to contend with magpies; he’s dealing with a more existential struggle. The idea for The First Team arrived in 2009. “A decade ago – oh God, I’m so old.” Back then, the pair were pondering their next move after the second season of The Inbetweeners, the E4 schoolboy comedy that grew into a massive hit and two successful movies.
Beesley and Morris had found a groove, they realised, “writing about male insecurity. That’s what...

The Inbetweeners was a revelation, on the small screen and the big one, and even now, to this very day, every time we walk past a bus stop we think ‘w***ers’. We can’t help (sorry commuters!) Needles to say we’ve been patiently anticipating what creators Iain Morris and Damon Beesley would conjure up next, and finally, coming to BBC2 this week, we have The First Team.
We had the pleasure of only speaking to the two writers/directors but also to the three leading cast-members, Shaquille Ali-Yebuah, Jack McMullen and Jake Short. The series, which is set behind the scenes at a fictional football club, we watch on as these promising youngsters navigate their way around the dressing room, and how they balance being famous with, you know, wiping your arse. We discuss the character with the three young lads, who all impress heavily in the show.
