As explained in my Simpsons’ movie parodies article, The Simpsons is a hugely metatextual show. Every episode is steeped in a sea of references to both famous and obscure pieces of pop culture. As a TV series, the show often pokes fun at television in particular.
It could be a quick cutaway gag or an extended full-episode parody, but it seems no one is safe from the show’s sharp eye – with everything from All In The Family to Sesame Street getting The Simpsons treatment over the decades. Even in more recent years, when other areas of the show have lost a bit of panache, the parodies of rival TV series have remained a core part of the show’s humour – the couch gags particularly are nowadays used to spoof other shows, like Breaking Bad and Game Of Thrones.
And there are plenty more where they came from.

Welcome to the ninth installment of our summer trip through "The Sopranos" season 1. When I revisited early seasons of "The Wire," as well as the whole run of "Deadwood," I did separate versions of each review for newcomers and veterans, but over time realized that the newcomers weren't commenting much, if at all, and that it therefore made sense to simply do one review. Any significant spoilers for episodes beyond the one being reviewed will be contained in a separate section at the end of the review; so long as you avoid that, and the comments, you should be fine. Thoughts on the ninth episode, “Boca," coming up just as soon as you lie like I play the French horn... "I didn't hurt nobody." -Tony In the grand scheme of "Sopranos" season 1, the most important part of "Boca" takes place on a Jersey golf course, where Uncle Junior and Tony...

Pickpockets to highwaymen, bank heists to drug smuggling, the readers' collective Robin Hood act has made a treasure chest
Under the cover of darkness they came. Precious time was snatched to deliver. One reader endured terrible pain and went to hospital, another is set to move house, but this did not stop them. And another, more delightfully, saw the delivery of a beautiful baby (I dedicate this blog to you, prolific Rr regular BeltwayBandit - congratulations!), and despite all of this, during this crazy pre-Christmas period, you still brought riches. Thank you, me hearties, for your bountiful song booty! From rampant robbery to surreptitious smuggling your treasures cascaded through the cellar door of the Readers Recommend and I spent many hours admiring, examining, analysing and enjoying. I am a man poor in time, but rich in song.
And now my turn again to stand and deliver. And indeed, among all the thieves,...

Sharon Osbourne has chosen her final six over-25s for the X Factor Judges' Houses stage.
Osbourne will host six hopefuls in Los Angeles, alongside veteran popstar - and former guest mentor - Robbie Williams.
Andrea Magee, 28, made her mark by performing an original song with flute when first in front of the judges. At Boot Camp, she took on 'With or Without You' by U2.
Shelley Smith has made it to Boot Camp twice before, but this year the 34-year-old delivery driver broke through to the final six with her performance of 'Respect' by Aretha Franklin.
Prison officer Sam Bailey, 35, impressed the judges with her room performance of 'Listen' by Beyoncé. She then won her place in Los Angeles by singing Emeli Sandé's 'Clown'.
Zoe Devlin, 28, is a former backing vocalist for Alabama 3. After quitting the band several years ago when she found out she...

James Gandolfini, who played New Jersey mob boss Tony Soprano, sadly died in Rome on Wednesday. Aged just 51, he was due to speak at Sicily’s Taormina film festival on Saturday. It is believed that he died from a heart attack.
Whilst Gandolfini was most famous for playing Tony Soprano, other career highlights included parts in True Romance, Get Shorty and Zero Dark Thirty. It was his role as Virgil in True Romance that inspired The Sopranos’ casting directors to ask him to audition for the part of Tony.
Gandolfini won three Emmys for his works as Tony Soprano. David Chase, creator of the hit TV show, described Gandolfini as a ‘genius’. For fans everywhere, here are some of the best bits of the much-loved mob family series.

Nothing puts you in the mood for your favorite movie or television show better than a great theme song. And nobody, and we mean nobody, does theme songs like the horror genre does. We've got 11 of the best here to prove that point.
"The Sopranos" had a great intro with "Woke Up This Morning" by Alabama 3, and there have been some pretty great cartoon theme songs like "The Flintstones" and "The Jetsons". Hell, even the old "Batman" theme song was a damn catchy tune, but honestly, horror dominates memorable theme songs. Just take a look at the list below, and we didn't even include some great ones like "Pet Sematary" by The Ramones, Dokken's "Dream Warriors" (written for A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors) or "He's Back (The Man Behind the Mask)" by Alice Cooper, written for Friday the 13th Part 6: Jason Lives. (Consider those the honorable mentions!

The Sopranos used a range of music like no other drama on television, and here we look at some of the highlights of its killer soundtrack. Somehow, not featuring The Police in a mob drama just wouldn't make sense…. Music has almost been another character in the classic mobster drama, from the opening bars of Alabama 3's Woke Up This Morning onwards.
