Michael Mann’s epic historical drama Ferrari will drive onto the red carpet at the Venice Film Festival this evening, one of the major titles in competition here on the Lido. It’s also one of the key films to secure a SAG-AFTRA interim agreement, allowing stars of the movie to do promotion.
This afternoon, Adam Driver, who plays Enzo Ferrari, told the Venice press corps he was “very happy to be here to support this movie,” but also, “very proud to be here, [and] to be a visual representation of a movie that’s not part of the AMPTP and to promote the SAG leadership directive [using] an effective tactic, which is the interim agreement.” The agreement, he noted helps “stop the bleeding a little bit so people in IATSE and SAG can go to work.”
Another objective, he continued, “is to say why is it that a smaller distribution...

There’s only one line of dialogue uttered in the first teaser trailer for Michael Mann’s Ferrari. Following shots of cars racing, snippets of angry people, and a fiery crash, Adam Driver as Enzo Ferrari declares, “If you get into one of my cars, you get in to win.”
Penélope Cruz, Shailene Woodley, Sarah Gordon, Gabriel Leone, Jack O’Connell, and Patrick Dempsey also star in director Michael Mann’s much-anticipated examination of Enzo Ferrari’s life.
Neon released this updated synopsis:

The only thing missing from the official teaser trailer for Michael Mann’s Ferrari is an obscenely loud Charli Xcx hyperpop song about driving fast and being hot — but that song actually ended up in Barbie. But Ferrari does have Adam Driver slipping into the persona of a troubled Italian man once again. This time, he’s traded the fashion world of House of Gucci for the fast-tracked life of Formula 1 racer Enzo Ferrari.
The minute-and-a-half-long trailer is a suspense (and anxiety) building introduction to the chaos of Ferrari’s personal life.

Few movies this year loom like Ferrari, the long-awaited and much-delayed return of Michael Mann. Ahead of its Venice premiere, New York Film Festival showing, and––to perfectly dovetail with telling your aunt and uncle about the levels of unreality Mann conjured with digital images in Miami Vice, Public Enemies, and Blackhat––Christmas release, Neon have shared a first teaser for the Adam Driver-led biopic of the automotive innovator.
There’s all the stuff we might say about how long Michael Mann’s hoped to make this film, how long we’ve waited for any new film (the Tokyo Vice pilot is nice but doesn’t count), or how great it is having Adam Driver get Ferrari (ahem) over the finish line. I’d rather defer to cinematographer Erik Messerschmidt telling us the goal was to have audiences “feeling like they’re in this machine. This machine is rattling...

Cricket fans were treated to a true miracle this week when a rogue seagull appeared to come back from the dead.
Perth Scorchers player Adam Voges smashed a ball right into the path of a poor bird, only for it to suddenly spring back to life moments later.
During the Big Bash Twenty20 clash between the Scorchers and Melbourne Stars, fielder Rob Quiney took the seemingly deceased bird to the boundary.
Seconds later, the bird re-emerged triumphantly, much to the joy and relief of the 30,000 spectators.
However, the drama was not over, as the bird attempted to pick a fight with the ball, flying straight towards it before being pipped by another fielder. Brave or stupid? We're not sure.
"The bird was taken outside into Yarra Park at the change of innings and released into the park when it was clear that the bird's health was okay," McG Media and...

Is it possible for a film to be too edgy? To go too far? David Cronenberg’s latest film tries to find an answer to that question.
At its core, Cosmopolis is a good idea. The novel on which it is based (and which it shares a name) has an interesting story full of apocalyptic undertones and has a lot to say about rich versus poor economic philosophy. These themes should have made for a film that fits very well into contemporary trends, but somehow the adaptation was botched. While the novel seems to be filled with a multitude of entertaining big-screen possibilities, the resulting movie is completely devoid of them.
I’m not quite sure what happened, but Cronenberg should take most of the blame. His repertoire says that he’s not afraid of purposefully making the audience squirm in their seats, but perhaps this time he’s taken himself a little too seriously.

Killer Joe (Lionsgate) William Friedkin’s film of Tracy Letts’ off-Broadway hit about a family of Texas trailer park cretins (Emile Hirsch, Juno Temple, Thomas Haden Church, Gina Gershon) who hire a cop-cum-hitman (Matthew McConaughey) to take out their troublesome mother, then foolishly cross him, is a stinging satire, given double-barreled audacity by Friedkin’s sure, and fearless, directorial hand. Earning its Nc-17 rating in spades, “Killer Joe” reminds us that daring, frank material like this is why movies exist in the first place. McConaughey gives the performance of his career, hopefully redefined after this. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Featurettes; Commentary by Friendkin; Trailer. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-hd 5.1 surround.
The Dark Knight Rises (Warner Bros.) Christopher Nolan’s coda to his “Batman” trilogy finds Christian Bale returning as a brooding Bruce Wayne/Caped Crusader, this time faced with a hulking villain (Tom Hardy) with respiratory...

With this Fall film season, comes the Fall film festival season, and this is looking like one hell of a circuit to be a part of. With films from the likes of Whit Stillman, David Cronenberg and even Chantal Akerman making their debut this year, film festivals across the world, including the likes of Toronto and Venice, will be the talk of the film world.
However, New York won’t be out done. The Nyff has just announced two new Galas that will be a part of their lineup this year, and they are two films to really keep an eye on.
First, the festival will host Pedro Almodovar’s The Skin I Live In, a film unlike any the director has ever made. I had the chance to see the Antonio Banderas-starring flick at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, and it’s an absolute winner. It’s...
