Happy Valentine’s Day, horror lovers! It’s everyone’s favorite time of year, where we all exchange sentimental poems and candy boxes filled with actual human hearts. That’s right—there is no better way to celebrate February 14th than to sit down with a slasher classic. Ten years ago, the remake of the 1981 Canadian horror film My Bloody Valentine premiered in theaters, ushering in a moment of both slasher goodness and 3D madness that would be a bright spot for gorehounds everywhere.
Leading up to this film’s release, horror had seen a dearth of slasher films. Though the prior year was certainly not a bad year for the genre, slashers weren’t exactly all the rage. The Saw franchise was at the front and center of horror offerings for the time period and though definitely gory, it didn’t quite have the same feel of the classic slasher film.

Chicago – 3D still doesn’t look nearly as impressive at home as it does in a crowded theater, but “My Bloody Valentine,” now on Blu-Ray and DVD, is easily the best-looking attempt to bring that experience into your living room to date.
Blu-Ray Rating: 4.0/5.0 I remember the first time I ever saw an HD picture. The person showing it to me praised the “nearly 3D” quality of the picture and, at its best, 1080P really does look like you can reach in and grab whatever is on display. Now imagine that picture quality with an actual 3D film. It’s not perfect - 3D on a home TV still has yet to be mastered - but it’s pretty jaw-dropping.
My Bloody Valentine was released on Blu-Ray on May 19th, 2009.

The remake of the semi-classic 1981 .My Bloody Valentine. uses state-of-the-art 3D camera tricks to exploit all the gore and nudity horror aficionados will expect and then some. It doesn.t push the genre but it.s bloody good fun regardless. Frequent Wes Craven collaborator Patrick Lussier helms his first theatrical release since .Dracula 2000. (and years of straight-to-video fare like .White Noise 2.) and all that experience in schlock pays off here with a succinct, deft handling of the material and the tech know-how to make this 3D pic a heck a lot more interesting than, ahem, .Friday the 13th 3D.. Scripters Todd Farmer and Zane Smith borrow the broad outlines of Stephen Miller and John Beaird.s original pic...

I had all but forgotten Lionsgate's My Bloody Valentine redux when the DVD showed up unannounced on my doorstep earlier this week. At first, I put off checking it out in favor of re-watching War of the Worlds and eating a medium meat lovers pizza. Then I remembered that it was one of those new 3D fangled movies. Would it be 3D on DVD as well? Would it come with those wacky glasses and all? All of a sudden I was like a kid again. Sure enough, the dvd graciously comes with four pairs of 3D glasses! C'mon in here kids! It's gonna be gory 3D fun for the whole frickin' family!!

Considering 3-D’s importance to both the My Bloody Valentine remake (out next week in a two-dvd set from Lionsgate) and the movie’s box-office success this past winter, it’s surprising that the process isn’t the focal point of more of the supplemental material. What’s gratifying is that the film’s dimensional presentation on disc works quite a bit better than the one seen in, for most recent example, this year’s home edition of Friday The 13th Part III.
While there are moments of ghosting, and the image inevitably lacks the clarity and true depth of the theatrical version, this DVD 3-D is overall pretty sharp, augmenting both the mood and the in-your-face jumps. The glasses, emblazoned not with Valentine’s logo but that of Lionsgate’s upcoming Saw VI (if only that movie was being produced using the process), utilize red and blue lenses—actually...

Despite its surprising box office success upon its release, "My Bloody Valentine 3-D" won't be getting a sequel treatment. Breaking the news, as reported by Shock Till You Drop, was the horror remake's director, Patrick Lussier, himself during his panel at the Fangoria Weekend of Horrors in Los Angeles.
On the occasion, the filmmaker who serves as visual consultant on Jessica Alba-starring "The Eye" reportedly claimed that Lionsgate "has no intention of developing a sequel at all". It is further noted that the studio prefer to leave the remake film, which has scored big in its opening week with $21.2 million, as a one-shot deal.
"My Bloody Valentine 3-D" itself is a horror thriller movie directed by "Scream" editor Patrick Lussier. Starring Jensen Ackles, Jaime King, Kerr Smith and Edi Gathegi, it centers on Tom Hanniger. Ten years after he caused the terrible accident in the coal miner that led...

As a sidebar before we jump into today’s topic, I want to keep my promise that this blog won’t just be about politics, or even gay horror. Sometimes it will just be about hot guys. Case in point: Todd Farmer, screenwriter of Jason X (with my favorite in the series after the original) and My Bloody Valentine 3D (with Zane Smith), which I saw on opening weekend and absolutely loved.
I (briefly) interviewed Farmer for a project called “Expanded Books” (formerly “Book Look”) when my friend Peter Bracke’s Crystal Lake Memories: The Complete History Of Friday The 13th had its release party. At the time I thought, “Uh…he cute.”
Cut To: My Bloody Valentine 3D. I go see the flick with a gaggle of homos and what are we treated to? Naked Todd Farmer! Ok, more like naked Todd Farmer’s ass, but still! As much...

Starring: Jensen Ackles, Megan Boone, Kerr Smith, Jaime King, Betsy Rue

Far be it for me to begrudge My Blood Valentine 3D its participatory sense of fun. Even though the movie feels like one long in-joke for genre enthusiasts, a sleepy ’80s slasher movie by way of William Castle, it gleefully calls out to an audience willing to burn $15 for a premium ticket to revel in the flying eyeballs, extravagant nudity and pickaxed brains that supposedly elevate this routine small-town splatter machine into a unique experience.

For My Bloody Valentine screenwriters Todd Farmer and Zane Smith, penning a script for a movie to be shot in the latest, most hi-tech version of 3-D yet did not pose any particular challenges. Nor did it call for them to dream up especially imaginative death scenes…at first.
“Certainly not initially,” says Farmer, whose previous credits include 2001’s Jason X and 2007’s The Messengers. “At first, we concentrated on characters and plot, because that’s really what we want to do. I mean, we’re all horror fans, so we’ve seen how some genre films have not pulled these things off. We wanted to tell an intriguing story, we wanted to have intriguing people—that was the first thing.
“But then I would be working on that aspect of it, and I would get a call in the middle of the night from my director,” Farmer continues, glancing over at the man himself,...

Steve Biodrowski of Cinefantastique likes what he's seen of "My Bloody Valentine." This film goes a long way toward giving remakes a good name. It takes a not particularly memorable film - one of a myriad holiday horror titles to follow in the wake of John Carpenter’s Halloween (1978) - and turns it into a crowd-pleasing horror movie that is actually much better than the slasher films of the 1980s from which it borrows its template. It delivers more than enough gore to satisfy the horror hounds - all of it comin’ at ya in glorious 3-D - but it never feels sadistic or off-putting. Equally impressive, screenwriters Todd Farmer and Zane Smith successfully manipulates the mystery and suspense elements to create an effective thriller almost from beginning to end. Their script keeps audiences guessing about the killer’s identity. Although it resorts to a cheat or two to throw you off the scent,...

Facts of interest: Remake of George Mihalka's 1981 "My Bloody Valentine."
The plot: A killer with a miner's mask and a pickaxe takes great pleasure in brutally murdering everyone he encounters.

These are just a few things you’ll experience in Patrick Lussier’s remake “My Bloody Valentine 3-D,” the first live-action, big-screen horror flick to open in Real 3D.

From the 1953 classic chiller .House of Wax. to the 1982 slasher .Friday the 13th Part III,. Hollywood has relied on 3-D technology to heighten shock and suspense. The primeval nature of the horror genre is synonymous with the stereoscopic visuals.
So when I heard Lionsgate was releasing a 3-D reimagining of the 1981 horror flick .My Bloody Valentine,. I was excited. I was, and still am, a fan of the genre, and I specially liked the original film which Quentin Tarantino called .the best slasher movie of all time..
The good news about the new flick? Because of the film.s 3-D technology, it is bigger in cinematic scope. But dazzling stereographic technology also means more blood and more nudity, with a little less attention focused on coherence.
But I suspect the film.s target audience will not mind. Give them blood and ample nudity,...

Showing a more dramatic sequence part of the horror movie than the first one, the less-than-a-minute footage presents Axel Palmer played by Kerr Smith and Deputy Martin portrayed by Edi Gathegi discussing about the miner-costumed slasher in the sheriff's office.

You know how we feel about remakes here at Dread. You know how long it takes to convince us that maybe, just maybe, the remake is justified. And though I’ve never really cared one way or another about the My Bloody Valentine redux, a new interview with its screenwriter, Todd Farmer, has almost swayed me to the side of not only caring, but actually looking forward to it.

“[Director] Patrick [Lussier] and I built on Zane Smith's already strong script. We forged a solid story as well as realistic,...
