On the occasion of “100 Yards” having its international premiere in Toronto, we speak with Xu Haofeng and Jacky Heung about the reception of the audience in Toronto, the appeal of wuxia nowadays, Xu Haofeng co-directing with his brother, Xu Junfeng and Jacky Heung co-starring with his wife, Beahayden Kuo, and the approach to the visuals and the action scenes.

Xu Haofeng has emerged as one of the most renowned authors, scriptwriters and directors of martial arts titles, with his credits including “The Grandmaster” (as a script-writer), “The Hidden Sword” and “The Final Master”. His latest works in particular combine wuxia tropes with ultra stylish visuals, with the last among the aforementioned titles being a distinctive sample. The same applies to “100 Yards”, which he co-directed with Xu Junfeng, which had its international premiere in Toronto
100 Yards is screening at Toronto International Film Festival
The story is set in 1920s Tianjin, just as a respected martial artist and leader of a wushu Academy is about to die. A regulated duel between the top apprentice, Qi and the master's son, Shen, kickstarts the saga, with the former winning relatively easily, and thus earning the ownership of the academy, with Chairman Meng acting as the steward of the deceased, enforcing his will.

1920s Tianjin, in Northern China. The son of a martial arts master and his most talented apprentice fight to take over a prominent martial arts academy. But rather than obey the rule of settling disputes behind closed doors, they take their fight to the street. 100 Yards is co-directed by filmmakers Xu Haofeng and Xu Junfeng (making his feature directorial debut). The screenplay is written by Xu Haofeng. It's produced by Jacky Heung. This initially premiered at the 2023 Shanghai Film Festival this summer, and it next plays at the Toronto Film Festival this fall.

"If there was trouble within 100 yards of the entrance, it was dealt with." The first teaser trailer is out for a Chinese martial arts action film titled 100 Years, co-directed by the filmmakers Xu Haofeng & Xu Junfeng. This is premiering as a centerpiece selection at the 2023 Toronto Film Festival coming up this fall, its first screening outside of China after showing at the Shanghai Film Festival. Two bitter rivals (starring Jacky Heung and Andy On) duel for stewardship of a wushu academy, in this "cool and calculated" martial arts caper from Xu Haofeng. It's set in the 1920s in Northern China, pre-wwii. With martial arts choreography by Duncan Leung, and cinematography by Shao Dan. The cast also includes Bea Hayden Kuo, Tang Shiyi, and Li Yuan. I'm digging the more minimalistic, refined style of this - clean shots, and clean dialogue. Bring it on. // Continue Reading ›...

Taiwan has denied prominent Hong Kong film producer and entertainment mogul Charles Heung Wah-keung and his son visas to live there, citing national security concerns.
Heung is known for founding Win’s Entertainment in the 1980s and 1990s powerhouse China Star Entertainment, the Hong Kong-listed production company and distributor that helped cement the stardom of Hong Kong cinematic icons such as Jet Li, Chow Yun-fat, Stephen Chow, Andy Lau, Johnnie To, and many more. In recent years, China Star has been more focused on the Macau gambling scene than production of new movies. Heung’s son Jacky is a rising action star.
The two had applied for permanent residence in Taiwan in December, according to the island’s Mainland Affairs Council (Mac), which oversees cross-straits policy. They had entered the country in September on three-month work visas, which could then be extended a further three months.

A miracle happens about 35 minutes into Johnnie To’s new film, “Chasing Dream”: Having debased and humiliated herself washing cars and pole dancing, Cuckoo (Keru Wang) nails an audition for “Perfect Diva,” To’s take on “China Idol” and secures her spot in the competition. Her captor, Tiger (Jacky Heung), debt collector by day, Mma fighter by night, and surprisingly loveable goofball by nature, excitedly calls in a series of debts owed him by an assembly line of woebegone schmucks with empty pockets.

We live in an era where celebrity has become more about fame than talent as those wishing for adulation do what they can to mimic the greats that came before them without ever worrying about proving whether they possess an ounce of originality. You want to impress the judges on “American Idol”? Show them you can be Madonna, Lady Gaga, and Rihanna all at once. You want to be the talk of the fighting world by unleashing your strength in the Ultimate Fighting Championships’ octagon? Switch up styles from boxing to Krav Maga with everything in-between to keep your opponents off-balance and your viewers entertained. Be the carbon copy of everything the zeitgeist craves, make as much money as you can during your fifteen minutes, and fade away.

Iconic Hong Kong filmmaker Johnnie To is back with his latest film, Chasing Dream, currently making the festival rounds. While To is probably most well known for his gangster sagas over the last two and a half decades, he's one of Southeast Asia's most prolific filmmakers, frequently darting between genres since he first hit the scene in the late '80s with a series of broad comedies and goofy horror films. Chasing Dream is no less than the latest evolution of that adventurous spirit, presenting a big hearted Mma themed musical for the modern age. Mma fighter Tiger (Jacky Heung) is an up and coming force in the octagon, but he's also a foodie with a dream. Nicknamed "The Gluttonous...

Much has been speculated about Johnnie To since the release of “Three” in the summer of 2016. The ongoing urban legend about filming “Election 3” was one of the rumors, of course, as it was the releasing of an omnibus with other Hong Kong directors or – worst – his decision to retire from the scenes. Rumors didn’t stop, if anything intensified, when in November the first trailer of “Chasing Dream” was released a bit out of the blue. Said rumors turned then into conspiracy theories about his latest work but they will not be mention here; director To is old and wise enough to decide what to do. So, finally, the latest Milkyway production “Chasing Dream”, directed by Johnnie To and his frequent collaborator Wai Ka-fai is having its international premiere in Udine, a Festival very dear to To’s heart.

Kick right into this. An early trailer has arrived online for the film being called Chasing Dream, originally titled Chihuo Quan Wang in Chinese. The film is the latest from Hong Kong filmmaker Johnnie To, who hasn't made anything since Three in 2016. He's back with this intense romantic drama, about a relationship between a young Mma fighter / boxer and a young women who wants to become a singer. Wow. How original. A passionate love story between a brutal man and a woman who loves to sing? We've never seen that before... There's not much footage in this first trailer, perhaps only a teaser, but it is something at least. Chasing Dream stars Jacky Heung and Keru Wang. I doubt this will end up playing outside of China, but you never know; only time will tell. This is our first glimpse so far - take a look below. Here's the first...
