Seattle’s Bumbershoot festival, held Aug. 30-Sept. 1, at Seattle Center, will have a little something for everyone this year. Headliners include veteran rockers Elvis Costello & The Imposters and The Replacements, rap acts J. Cole and Wu-Tang Clan, and relative newcomers Foster the People and The Head and The Heart. Also on the diverse bill are Panic! At the Disco, Schoolboy Q, Capital Cities, Neon Trees, The Afghan Whigs, Hurray for the Riff Raff, Mission of Burma, Los Lobos, Bootsy Collins, The Both, Walk the Moon, The Dismemberment Plan, Real Estate, and about 75 other acts. Of particular interest are Big Star’s Third, a collection of artists who come together to play the rock band’s third album, a cult favorite known as “Third” and “Sister Lovers.” The collective usually includes Big Star drummer Jody Stephens as well as others either affiliated with Big Star or acolytes. Here’s what the...

Jessica Hernandez & The Deltas have climbed up the ranks to become one of Detroit’s most popular acts. 25 year-old Hernandez was raised in Detroit, and The Motor City’s influence is immediately apparent in her music. She has a distinct voice that is as gritty and raw as it is genuine. Hernandez and the Deltas recently got together to make an acoustic video for their song “Dead Brains”. In true Detroit fashion, the band all piled into a ’66 Lincoln Continental and drove around the city, filming on four different iPhones as they went. The vocals were recorded in one...

Sundance Selects is planning a fall 2013 release.
Jonathan Sehring, president of Sundance Selects/IFC Films, commented: “The Punk Singer is one of those great documentaries that makes you realise how much a single person can accomplish in a short span of time.

The five original members of Bone Thugs-n-Harmony will descend on Detroit this summer, performing together for their 20 year anniversary reunion. But it won't be at a standard arena: the group will be performing '90s hits like "Ghetto Cowboy" at Oakaloosa, a brand-new, all-day music festival that happens to be held at an 1840s-era army fort on the Detroit River.
Bone Thugs and mashup king Girl Talk are the headliners for the July 27 festival, which will bring 12 hours of nonstop music to Historic Fort Wayne. Festival-goers will hear the sounds from two stages set up near the river and the property's barracks. For many Detroiters, it will be their first time stepping across the moat and inside this relic of history.
(Scroll down to see all the artists announced for Oakaloosa so far.)
More artists will be announced as July approaches, but so far the lineup showcases some of the state's top talent,...

My Sundance Film Festival Monday (Jan. 25) began with a pair of high profile entries from the U.S. Documentary Competition slate. However, despite fascinating subject matter for "Bhutto" and favored Sundance director Jeffrey Blitz behind "Lucky," neither doc fully engaged me. Brief reviews for "Bhutto" and "Lucky" after the break... "Bhutto" (directors Jessica Hernandez and Johnny O'Hara) - The late Pakistani prime minister Benazir Bhutto gets adoring and arduously by-the-numbers bio-doc treatment in "Bhutto," which aspires to nothing less than a full history of Pakistan, the Bhutto family and a year-by-year chronicle of the iconic politician's life. Although not without enlightening...

As I said in Toronto and again at the Hof Flm Festival, until there is parity between male and female directors I will continue to look at women directors. I heard the other day that the number of women directors is actually decreasing in the television world.
Here are some quick facts on Sundance this year:
If you include shorts- 51 women directors are represented at Sundance.
In the Premiere section, out of 16 films 7 have women directors.
John Cooper, Director, Sundance Film Festival, brought it to my attention that "Low Budget is dominated by the boys still but that is changing with Lynn Shelton, Katie Aselton etc stepping up. Even there, many have women producers. I have a hunch in the indie creative producer world women dominate. Like I said, that is just a hunch I have never done a study."
Sundance Film Festival is showing approximately 115 features. Of those 25 (20%) are...

Sundance released their slate for 2010. It includes:43 documentaries on the Middle East12 films about friends who 'discover' something33 movies about people you've never heard about1 comedyHopefully the lineup this year is strong but it doesn't look that way compared to last year. Last year we had Push (Precious), that Lil Wayne documentary that never went anywhere, Mystery Team which might make my top ten, Moon, Mike Tyson documentary, Cold Souls. Just so much last January that was excellent. I hope I don't go out therer and freeze my tail off just to see...I don't know, a documentary about a former Pakistani prime minister or something silly like that. Here's the lineup so far: Premieres To showcase the diversity to contemporary independent cinema, the Sundance Film Festival Premieres section offers the latest work from American and international directors as well as world premieres of highly anticipated films. Presented by Entertainment Weekly.

The British satirist's new film joins the lineup of 113 independent films to unspool over the 2010 festival, together with new movies starring Kristen Stewart, James Gandolfini and James Franco
Satirist Chris Morris looks set to lead the British charge at next year's Sundance film festival – his debut feature has been selected to premiere at the event. Four Lions comes billed as a comedy about a band of wannabe British jihadists. Morris has claimed that the film will do for Islamist extremists what Dad's Army did for Nazis – making them look "scary but also ridiculous".
All the same, Four Lions remains likely to spark controversy. Morris was dubbed the "most hated man in Britain" after a Brass Eye TV special in 2001 which dared to poke fun at the moral panic surrounding paedophilia.
Four Lions takes its place among 113 independent films that are due to be unveiled at Park City. The 16 films selected...

The Sundance Film Festival has unveiled the lineup of films playing in competition from January 21 through January 31, 2010. The early fest typically debuts some of the best films the year has to offer, like 2009’s Precious, (500) Days of Summer, and Moon.
I’m bummed I won’t be in Park City, Utah next month because the lineup looks great, and these are just the films playing in competition. Here’s a few that stood out to me:
The Allen Ginsberg trial film Howl starring James Franco, a documentary by Alex Gibney (a truly great filmmaker) on Jack Abramoff, Mark Ruffalo’s directorial debut Sympathy for Delicious, a doc about Joan Rivers, the directorial debut of “How I Met Your Mother” star Josh Radnor titled Happythankyoumoreplease (I wrote a glowing script review of it here), Hesher with Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Natalie Portman, and Blue Valentine starring Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams.

The Sundance Institute announced today the first list of films that will play at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival, which I will once again be attending and covering for Fsr. This announcement includes the U.S. and World Cinema Dramatic and Documentary Competitions for the fst. In addition to the four Competition Categories, the Festival presents films in five out-of-competition sections to be announced on December 3. The 2010 Sundance Film Festival will also feature several category changes including a new section devoted to low- and no-budget filmmaking and Sundance Film Festival U.S.A.- a one-night only event when eight filmmakers from the Festival will visit eight cities nationwide. In addition, the Festival will break tradition by foregoing the conventions of one opening night film and instead focus on launching the total program: one narrative film, one documentary and one shorts program will play the first Thursday (January 21), beginning the roll out of the competitions. “Being...
