For the sound team behind Netflix’s “Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” — including production sound mixer Amanda Beggs and re-recording mixer Laura Wiest — it was important to do a deep dive into the Jeffrey Dahmer case after signing onto the true crime drama, so that they had a clear sense of how much of the show was fact, as opposed to fiction.
“After getting the scripts and starting to read them, I, of course, was curious as far as how much was true, how much was fiction, and so just sort of did my own diving into the research, just out of sheer curiosity, just to know sort of how truthful the show was trying to be,” Beggs tells Gold Derby during a recent webchat (watch the exclusive video interview above). “Because I think that also informs the performances and everything as well — and that’s obviously my goal: to capture performance.

The live-action feature nominees for the 57th annual Cas Awards for sound mixing (presented virtually on April 17) include “Greyhound,” “Mank,” “News of the World,” “Sound of Metal,” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7.” Darius Marder’s innovative “Sound of Metal,” the frontrunner, also split the Motion Picture Sound Editors nominations with Paul Greengrass’ “News of the World,” with three nods.
Not making the cut, though, was Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet,” the time inversion spy thriller, which was roundly criticized for mixing its dialogue way too low. Also overlooked was George Clooney’s sci-fi drama, “The Midnight Sky,” though the director will be honored as Cas Filmmaker.
In terms of the Oscar race, the Academy has consolidated sound editing and mixing onto a single category for the first time this season.
Seven-time Oscar-nominated sound mixer William B. Kaplan is this year’s Cas Career Achievement Honoree.

Karol Urban has been elected president of the Cinema Audio Society, succeeding Mark Ulano, who has been termed out after four years. Urban, a veteran re-recording mixer, is only the second female president in the organization’s 55-year history, and the first since 2002.
The Cas, whose membership is 95% male, was founded in 1964 to advance the specialized field of cinematic sound recording and to achieve recognition for its members.
“I am so incredibly honored to have garnered the confidence of our esteemed members,” Urban said. “After years of serving under different presidents and managing the content for the Cas Quarterly, I have learned so much about the achievements, interests, talents and concerns of our membership. I am excited to be given this new platform to celebrate the achievements and herald new opportunities to serve this incredibly dynamic and talented community.”
Urban joined Cas in 2008 and began contributing articles for the Cas quarterly magazine.
