Zachary Levi returns for a sequel to DC’s 2019 superhero hit, alongside returning director David F. Sandberg. As such, the follow-up doesn’t quite hit the heights of the first film, but there’s a decent amount of fun to be had along the way.
The plot picks up two years after the events of the previous film, with Billy Batson (Asher Angel / Levi) and his Shazam Family of teens-who-turn-into-adult-superheroes established as a team of costumed crimefighters in their city, even if they occasionally screw up, earning them the label “the Philadelphia Fiascos”. However, when the vengeful Daughters of Atlas (Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu) show up,...

I was a fan of David F. Sandberg from the very first time I saw the short film “Lights Out.” And when he brought that creep factor to the big screen, and followed it up with Annabelle: Creation, I continued to be impressed. When Mr. Sandberg took on Shazam! it became pretty apparent the filmmaker had a few more tricks up his sleeve. As a storyteller, the man has a knack for balancing humor and horror. And he is certainly having a bit of fun bringing that to the big screen. And yes, he did it again in Shazam! Fury of the Gods.
We recently spent some time at the junket for the new sequel. David was in attendance to talk about his latest supersize sequel. He opened up about bringing in assorted monsters, and working off of Chris Morgan and Henry Gayden’s script. The filmmaker talked about his approach to creatures,...

Henry Gayden and Chris Morgan clearly like working together. The day before Shazam! Fury of the Gods hit theaters, the co-writers couldn’t say enough good things about each other, tossing questions and praise back and forth on a mid-morning Zoom call with The Hollywood Reporter.
“I’m a huge fan of Henry’s writing,” said Morgan, who’s known for his work as a screenwriter on The Fast and the Furious franchise, about hopping onto the Shazam! sequel with Gayden. “He has this kind of a superpower of being able to tap into a teen voice that I just have no access to…I just kind of am in awe of that.”
Gayden felt just as strongly about Morgan, and even wrote a Fast and Furious joke into into the script as a tribute.

In the super-sequel “Shazam! Fury of the Gods,” mild-mannered teen Billy Batson learns the importance of togetherness as he and his team of hero pals save Philadelphia from a triumvirate of titanettes. Paired for the first time, screenwriters Chris Morgan and Henry Gayden got their own lesson in the fine art of teamwork as they joined forces for a lighter spin on the capes-and-tights picture.

Who bought Skittles from the concession stand prior to enjoying "Shazam: Fury of the Gods" in theaters this weekend? If you didn't, the movie itself attempts to brainwash us into buying Skittles — or at least buying them as a viable plot device.
On the one hand, it is admittedly funny when "Fury of the Gods" likens the rainbow-colored candy to ambrosia, the nectar of the gods. Steeped in both DC superhero mythology and pop Greek mythology, the movie builds up unicorns as a fearsome, misanthropic threat, only for the youngest member of the Shazamily, Darla Dudley (Faithe Herman), to entice one out of the darkness with Skittles. Having a cute kid sell the idea that Skittles hath charms to soothe the savage beast is an amusing flourish.

DC and New Line Cinema’s Shazam! Fury of the Gods is a superhero pic scorned.
The movie opened to a dismal $30.5 million domestically from 4,071 theaters, well behind the $53.5 million domestic opening of the first Shazam! in 2019, not adjusted for inflation.
That’s one of the worst starts for a major Hollywood superhero film, as well as one of the worst for a title in the DC Cinematic Universe, including those released during the pandemic. Fury of the Gods cost at least $110 million to produce before marketing.
The news was just as bad overseas, where Fury of the Gods opened to just $35 million from 78 markets — including bombing in China with $4.4 million — for a worldwide start of $65.5 million.
In North America, prerelease tracking had suggested Shazam! Fury of the Gods would open to at least $35 million this weekend. Others believed it had a shot at $40 million.

There's no denying that Dame Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu make for better supervillains than a talking worm, but the fact remains: the first "Shazam" movie promised us Mister Mind. Or did it? If you sat through to the end of the sequel "Shazam! Fury of the Gods" this weekend, you may have been overcome by a sense of deja vu as the post-credits scene checked back in with Mark Strong's Dr. Sivana in his jail cell, where Mister Mind showed back up on the window ledge, talking up all his big plans, just as he did at the end of "Shazam."
Taken as tongue-in-cheek in a self-aware, "Deadpool"-lite sort of way, the "Fury of the Gods" post-credits scene lands like a tacit acknowledgment that the whole Mister Mind thing isn't going anywhere and that he probably wouldn't have been the best villain,...

Go See It!
Most sequels have a tough enough job just living up to their first movie, and this one would have had a big enough job just being a sequel to the original Shazam! What director David F. Sandberg’s first movie had was the novelty of the story of a boy having the power to just speak a magic word and finding himself in his now adult “ultimate form”, plus the power of being nearly Superman’s equal (some would argue even more), a fun novelty super hero movie. The story also had the subplot of young Billy Batson’s quest to find his mother after having been in foster homes his whole life, only to realize that the foster home he is in has provided him with the family he really needed by the end of the movie. In the end, he creates the Shazam family,...

After joining the Dceu in 2017, Shazam! Fury of the Gods director David F. Sandberg is ready to hang up his cape.
With the second chapter of the Shazamily’s adventures now in theaters, the Swedish filmmaker is finally able to open up about one of the highlights of his entire experience. Of course, that would be Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman cameo, which he actually directed remotely from home. The chance to properly include a member of the Justice League also made up for Henry Cavill’s Superman cameo that didn’t pan out on 2019’s Shazam!, resulting in a headless Superman cameo.
But because of that prior disappointment, Sandberg still expected the worst to happen with Gadot.

When I first saw Shazam! I was truly impressed with the mix of humor, horror, and action. And with the latest, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, I found a sequel worth entertaining in. It is funny, smart, and is just as clever and engaging as the first. And much of that credit can be given to the screenwriters behind it. Henry Gayden, who wrote the original film, is back. He is joined this time around by Chris Morgan. The two have done a terrific job of creating a continuation that doesn’t repeat itself, but still maintains the heart of the first.
We recently had the pleasure of chatting with both Chris and Henry about the new film. They opened up about taking on a superhero story and splashing in mythology. The two discussed what David F. Sandberg brought to the experience, and how cool it was to have Helen Mirren on set.

If that final end-credits scene of Shazam! Fury of the Gods looked familiar, it was supposed to.
After a long battle against the daughters of Atlas — Hespera (Helen Mirren), Kalypso (Lucy Liu) and Anthea (Rachel Zegler)— the DC sequel ends with Billy Batson (Asher Angel/Zachary Levi) and the Shazam! family safely back together, rebuilding their home after it was destroyed in the final fight. They all have their powers restored, and Billy finally learns his true superhero name — it’s Shazam, obviously. And once credits roll on what is potentially Levi’s last outing as the superhero, there are two end-credits sequences.
The final end-credits scene calls back to the post-credit promises of the first film, which featured Doctor Sivana (Mark Strong) conspiring for revenge in his jail cell with an unlikely visitor — Mister Mind, a supervillain worm with a robotic voice who’s a major Shazam!

Despite the fun and comradery present in 2019’s Shazam!, that film’s sequel – Shazam! Fury of the Gods – unfortunately takes the property down the too often travelled road of over-dramatized and overblown entries that populate the DC Extended Cinematic Universe (Dcecu).
This new entry continues the story of Billy Batson (Asher Angel) – a teenager who can transform himself into a superhero almost as powerful as Superman by speaking the word “Shazam!” – and his extended foster-family of fellow superheroes as they do battle with the now resurrected Greek gods Hespera (Helen Mirren), Kalypso (Lucy Liu), and Anthea (Rachel Zegler) who are determined to reclaim the powers of the gods for themselves.
Returning director David F. Sandberg and screenwriter Henry Gayden are joined by Chris Morgan who serves as an additional screenwriter apparently added to ensure that the film gets the Dcecu treatment and becomes an unwieldy and overwrought narrative that loses...

Warner Bros./New Line/DC’s “Shazam!: Fury of the Gods” is expected to make substantially less at the box office than its 2019 predecessor, and that is playing out with Thursday previews as the sequel made $3.4 million from more than 3,400 theaters.
Four years ago, “Shazam!” earned $6 million from Thursday previews en route to a $53.5 million opening weekend, beating projections of a $45 million launch. Heading into this weekend, “Shazam 2” projections have stayed at $35 to 38 million.
While there is still a possibility that this $100 million superhero film could still pass the break-even point from such an opening weekend, the film would have to gather considerable word-of-mouth in the coming weeks to do so, particularly among families looking for a day at the movies as schools have spring break on a rolling basis through late March and early April.

DC and New Line Cinema’s Shazam! Fury of the Gods has started off its domestic box office run with $3.4 million in Thursday evening previews.
Prerelease tracking suggests the superhero sequel will open to $35 million this weekend, one of the lower starts for a Hollywood superhero pic. Others believe it has a shot at $40 million, although that would still be behind the $53.5 million domestic opening of the first Shazam! in 2019, including $5.9 million in previews. not adjusted for inflation.
Shazam 2‘s Rotten Tomatoes critics score is a ho-hum 55 percent. That compares to 90 percent for the 2019 movie.
Families — which played a key role in the first movie’s surprise success — remain a challenged moviegoing demo in the pandemic era.
One advantage: the pic is playing in Imax and other premium-format theaters, which carry an upcharge.

DC and New Line Cinema’s Shazam! Fury of the Gods is hoping for some heavenly help when opening this weekend in thousands of theaters across the U.S. and world.
According to prerelease tracking, the superhero pic is expected to start off with $35 million-plus in North America, compared to the $53.5 million domestic debut of Shazam! in 2019, not adjusted for inflation. No major Hollywood studios sets out to make a sequel that doesn’t match the first, leaving many to wonder whether tracking is being too conservative in this instance.

Poor Shazam. Its production and release hampered by Covid and now seemingly lame-ducked by the arrival of a new regime to run DC Studios, the big red-suited lug’s second movie, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, finally makes its lonely stand in an effort to tap into the good will generated by his 2019 big-screen debut and, perhaps, plead its case to keep this off-brand DC franchise going.
We say off-brand because when the first Shazam! came out, it was a fun, funny, family-oriented, brightly-colored antidote to the ponderous, dark, heavy-handed edgelord theatrics of the Snyderverse that dominated DC for nearly a decade. It had heart, its stakes were relatively small, and its hero was much more relatably human than the brooding bro-dudes and psychotics we had gotten used to from the Dceu.

Why did they give Zachary Levi a haircut for “Shazam! Fury of the Gods”? Four years ago, in the first “Shazam!,” Levi played a kid in a superhero’s body, and the movie was smart and witty enough to come off as a caped version of “Big.” Levi’s look was a major part of it. Shazam, with that cheesy lightning bolt and gold belt and white Italian-restaurant tablecloth of a cape, didn’t resemble other recent comic-book-film heroes; he was more like something out of the ’40s. And Levi sealed the deal was his big popping eyes and ingenuous gee-whiz grin, as well as the hair that topped off his boyish spirit. It was dark and shiny and stood up an inch-and-a-half from his head — a ‘do as superhero stylized, in its way, as the old Superman’s.

Shazam!, released in 2019, was the story of Billy (Asher Angel), a teenage boy granted the ability to transform into an adult, off-brand Superman (Zachary Levi) with the simple cry of the film’s title. Today it is rarely upheld as a highlight in DC’s catalogue, but at a time in which the studio’s output so often felt exhaustingly cataclysmic, it was refreshing to see a superhero movie that forefronted sweetness and sincerity.
What a difference four years make. Shazam!’s sequel, Fury of the Gods, has now been sent out, defenceless, into DC’s cinematic no man’s land. The film marks one of the last breaths of an old regime at the studio, which is now under the control of Peter Safran and Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn. Their universe will presumably dispense with the dishevelled approach to tone and continuity that characterised the tenure of their predecessor Walter Hamada.

The Dceu is, ostensibly, as we know it no more. The fast-tracked approach to trying to keep up with the MCU that started with 2016’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice didn’t work and now the stewardship of the film branch of DC Comics is under new management. James Gunn and Peter Safran plan to revitalise the ailing franchises with some freshness, deviating from what has gone before and essentially resetting everything, much to the chagrin of many fans of the series. The old guard – primarily Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, and Gal Gadot – are nowhere to be seen with the futures of Jason Momoa’s Aquaman and Ezra Miller’s The Flash up in the air (though for very different reasons).
There were some sporadic highlights through their tenures but there were more high profile disappointments than anything else. Yet, nestled away in the background of it all was Shazam!

Shazam! Fury of the Gods comes four years after its predecessor, introducing new forces that threaten Billy Batson and his superpowered family. The DC Extended Universe is once again changing direction under new leadership, but the fandom still has the opportunity to explore this continuation. The sequel doesn’t improve on the original, although it finds the beats that comic fans are looking for.

The Shazamily is back, and on a much larger scale, but at its heart this superhero saga is still about family, and that’s the good thing here.
In 2019’s origin story (which goes way back to 1940 comics when the then-named Captain Marvel was introduced), a group of teens in a foster home, often bullied in school and going through life alone, bonded as a family and as their older superhero alter egos. That movie, from Swedish director David F. Sandberg, was a nice hit for the DC brand at Warners and even won over critics. So naturally we could expect a sequel, even as this comic book brand is undergoing major changes. Employing the same mix of humor and heart, but really amping up the super-heroics as it were, this second edition bodes well for its future in the uncertain DC Universe, at least in terms of delivering on what finicky fans expect.

2019’s Shazam! delivered a charming origin story of the DC Comics character Billy Batson, a teenage boy who meets a wizard who bestows on him the ability to become a grown-up superhero upon uttering the magic word. Now, Billy is back, along with his foster siblings, who have similar superhuman alter-egos, in the sequel Shazam! Fury of the Gods. But like some children who aren’t so cute anymore after they’ve grown up a little, this follow-up lacks much of the appeal of its predecessor. While the film provides the elaborate action set pieces, colorful villains and save-the-world plot mechanics expected of the comic book movie genre, some of the magic is missing.
The story’s villains are the Daughters of Atlas, a trio of ancient goddesses who have come to Earth to reclaim the magical powers that the wizard Shazam (Djimon Hounsou) took from them. (Why they need them,...

Zachary Levi straddled the past and future of DC at the Shazam! Fury of the Gods premiere, a splashy affair that made good on the premise of Big meets supeheroes with a party that featured arcade games and a carnival-like atmosphere.
Levi, taking the stage at the Regency Village Theatre in Westwood, thanked leadership at Warner Bros., New Line and DC, which has faced executive shakeups since the days of Levi’s first film. Among those Levi thanked were new DC Studios co-head Peter Safran (a producer on Fury of the Gods) and former DC boss Walter Hamada, who exited his post as DC Films chief last year and who was instrumental in both Shazam! features. The executive, now overseeing a horror line at Paramount, was in attendance at the event.

Ever since the DC universe was placed under new management with James Gunn and Peter Safran at the helm, fans of the brand have voiced their concerns and criticism of the decisions they’ve made. Most notably, fans were disappointed to hear that the big players of the Snyderverse were officially put on ice. One person defending the new bosses was Zachary Levi. The premiere for Shazam: Fury of the Gods zapped into Hollywood last night, and Levi would continue to be cautiously optimistic with Gunn and Safran as he spoke with Deadline on the red carpet.
Levi had defended Gunn and Safran on Twitter in the past by asking for patience from the fans as the new DC heads get the ball rolling. He says this as the uncertainty of Shazam‘s future looms overhead. On the red carpet, Levi stated, “It all comes down to what the people want.

When "Shazam!" first flew into theaters in 2019, the young-at-heart hero was a breath of fresh air. After being called upon by an ancient wizard, 14-year-old Billy Batson (Asher Angel) gained unbelievable powers as the adult superhero, Shazam (Zachary Levi). And as any teen boy would, he immediately put those powers to excellent use by skipping school, wreaking (accidental) havoc, and bonding with his foster brother, Freddy (Jack Dylan Grazer).
At the time, "Shazam!" was a surprisingly pleasant entry in the lackluster DC Extended Universe. And though it found interesting ways to integrate horror, it veered away from the grim Snyder-era films with its distinct sense of humor. Between being genuinely great and earning plenty of love, a sequel was inevitable. Four years and a complete upheaval of the Dceu later, the Shazamily has returned for "Shazam! Fury of the Gods"! And based on the early buzz, they're more magical than ever.

It feels like forever since 2019's "Shazam!" came out. Covid delays kept "Shazam! The film once again stars Zachary Levi as Billy Batson aka Shazam, who fights crime with his foster brothers and sisters.
This time around, the Shazamily is facing off against goddesses in the form of the daughters of Atlas -- Hespera (Helen Mirren), Kalypso (Lucy Liu), and Anthea (Rachel Zegler) -- who are looking for a dangerous artifact that could destroy the world. That's a lot to deal with for a bunch of people who aren't legally old enough to drink.

"Shazam! Fury of the Gods" is almost in theaters, and in the new DC movie, there is a brand new threat to our world. The Daughters of Atlas -- Hespera (Helen Mirren), Kalypso (Lucy Liu), and Anthea (Rachel Zegler) -- are out of their realm and in ours, looking for an artifact that has the potential to destroy life as we know it.
If the names sound familiar, it's because these are characters from Greek mythology. Their origins have changed a bit: Anthea is actually the Roman name of one of the Graces, and Kalypso is the one who imprisoned Odysseus in "The Odyssey." In the film, they need the wizard's (Djimon Hounsou) staff to complete their task ... and to get those pesky superhero kids in adult bodies out of the way.

Crafting brand new villains for a superhero movie extravaganza like Shazam: Fury of the Gods is no easy feat. But in the highly-anticipated sequel, director David F. Sandberg enlisted three Hollywood icons to bring these original antagonists to life. Looking to the mythological origins of the hero Shazam, Sandberg and writers Henry Gayden and Chris Morgan introduce the Daughters of Atlas; Hespera (Helen Mirren), Kalypso (Lucy Liu), and Anthea (Rachel Zegler), who are less than happy to have seen their father’s powers stolen by the titular superhero. For Sandberg, it was a logical choice. “It was just such a cool idea,” the director tells us. “If those powers came from these gods, what if they were actually taken from them? What if they didn’t want to give up their powers and now they’re coming to Earth to take them back and they’re pissed off about it?...

The first trailer for DC Comics’ upcoming sequel, “Shazam: Fury of the Gods” dropped Thursday, and pitting Zachary Levi’s hero against Lucy Liu and others promises to be a showdown for the ages.
The sequel to New Line and DC Comics’ acclaimed 2019 film “Shazam!,” “Shazam: Fury of the Gods” will continue the story of teenage Billy Batson who, upon reciting the magic word “Shazam!” is struck by the Living Lightning of the gods and transformed into his adult superhero alter ego, Shazam.
Asher Angel returns as Billy, with Zachary Levi once again playing the kid-at-heart superhero alter ego Shazam, bestowed with the powers of six gods: the wisdom of Solomon, the strength of Hercules, the stamina of Atlas, the power of Zeus, the courage of Achilles and the speed of Mercury. While Shazam is a formidable champion, Billy Batson is still just a kid trying to navigate high school...

When "Shazam!" hit theaters back in 2019, it was a breath of fresh air not only for the DC Extended Universe but for superhero media as well. While it obviously did have a big world-defining conflict that Billy Batson (Asher Angel and Zachary Levi) had to deal with, it was ultimately a coming-of-age tale all about becoming comfortable with yourself. You are able to create the best possible version of yourself, and that is perhaps best evidenced by the fact that Billy and his foster siblings can now fight crime as the Shazam Family.
So, where does that leave our heroes to go next? According to the latest trailer for "Shazam! Fury of the Gods," this puts them right in the path of the Daughters of Atlas, a sisterly duo consisting of Hespera (Helen Mirren) and Kalypso (Lucy Liu), who seek nothing but total power. Sure, that sounds pretty generic for a superhero movie,...

Before the Rock changed the hierarchy of power in the DC Universe, there was another character who had been blessed with the power of the gods. That character is Shazam, who made his big screen debut in the 2018 film of the same name directed by David F. Sandberg. When thinking of directors who could bring a lighthearted superhero like Shazam to life, Sandberg is certainly an inspired choice. Before becoming the director of "Shazam!" Sandberg had previously made the horror films "Lights Out" (based on his original short film) and the prequel film "Anabelle: Creation." So, when Newline began their search for a director, Sandberg's talents behind the camera with these two horror films seemingly made him the best fit.
"Shazam!" at the time of its release was unlike the DC Universe films, offering a lighthearted and very comedic take on the comic book movie genre. Most, if not all,...
