Andy Serkis' directorial debut, Breathe, has much to recommend it. Here's our review...
Back in 2011, Andy Serkis and producer Jonathan Cavendish set up The Imaginarium, a production company and performance capture studio that has provided effects for Serkis-starring movies like Avengers: Age Of Ultron, Star Wars: The Force Awakens and the last three Planet Of The Apes movies. Breathe is the Imaginarium's first produced film (though their second on release, after horror movie The Ritual) and as you must be able to guess from the premise, it's a world away from that kind of Hollywood fare.
Based on the true story of Cavendish's parents, we meet 28-year-old Robin Cavendish (Andrew Garfield) as he meets and courts Diana Blacker (Claire Foy.) They marry and move to Kenya soon after and anticipate a lifetime of adventure ahead of them, that is, until Robin falls ill. Polio leaves him paralysed from the neck down,...

Andy Serkis’s directorial debut about the life of pioneering polio survivor Robin Cavendish is heartwarming and heartbreaking in equal measure
Joy is a complicated emotion to capture on screen – particularly when your narrative deals with paralysis, imprisonment and a desire for death. Yet Andy Serkis’s directorial feature debut, about the life of pioneering polio survivor Robin Cavendish, is so full of laughter that one might easily forget its sombre subject matter. Part exuberant love story, part great escape adventure, this is an old-fashioned tale of triumph over adversity that refuses – like its protagonists – to succumb to confinement. Comparisons with The Diving Bell and the Butterfly and The Theory of Everything are perhaps inevitable, but I was reminded more of the warmth and wit of the lovely 2014 Edwyn Collins documentary The Possibilities Are Endless. I honestly can’t remember the last time I laughed and cried so much at the same movie.

Everyone wants to live life as they chose but in the 1950s, options were severely limited for someone paralyzed. At that time, paralysis usually meant a short life, confined to a hospital on a stationary breathing machine or in an iron lung. Being on a respirator meant not even being able to get about in a wheelchair. Robin Cavendish did not want that life, and thanks to his wife and friends, he did not have to live that way.

There are cynics out there who snicker at any film, based on a true story, that celebrates the triumph of the human spirit at overcoming a physical handicap. I've been among the snickerers myself. But Breathe, the first film directed by motion-capture acting wizard Andy Serkis (Gollum, Snoke, King Kong, Caesar the ape), wore me down by the sheer force of its sincerity. Does the script by William Nicholson sometimes hit the sentiment pedal too hard? It does. But look at the tale it's telling.

From its opening aerial shots, to the stylized font used to announce its title, it’s pretty clear that Andy Serkis’ Breathe is a throwback to a kind of movie Hollywood specialized in a very long time ago: the inspirational melodrama based on a true story that once would’ve starred Greer Garson and Walter Pidgeon. Breathe stars Andrew Garfield and Claire Foy as Robin and Diana Cavendish, respectively, the married couple who revolutionized the way in which the world saw people with disabilities. When we first meet them in the late 1950s, Robin is a bright eyed young man ready to conquer the world. He sets his eye on the beautiful Diana at a cricket game, and despite his friends suggesting she would never go for a guy like him, within the first ten minutes of the film they get married, she’s expecting a child, and he’s...

MaryAnn’s quick take… A romance and a real-life adventure, full of life-and-death peril and unexpected cheerful good humor, about a pioneer in disability rights and dignity. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing

You’ll be dead in two weeks,” growls an unsympathetic doctor to Robin Cavendish, stricken with polio and unable to breathe on his own, as his wife, Diana, springs him from a British hospital. Apparently this was the way things were: Someone like Robin, paralyzed from the neck down and utterly dependent on a respirator, was expected to simply lie in a hospital bed for the rest of his life, presumed to be no more than a few months anyway. I suppose that cantankerous doctor had his patient’s best interests at heart, since no one in Robin’s condition had ever survived outside a hospital before.

After being snubbed for his performance in The Social Network, Andrew Garfield took a detour from the awards season for a while. Part of that was his turn as Spider-Man, to be sure, though overall he just wasn’t making Academy friendly fare. Then, last year found him in contention for a pair of prestige titles, with Hacksaw Ridge and Silence. The former got Garfield his first nomination, while the latter expanded his range. This week, Breathe opens and hopes to propel Garfield back into the Best Actor field. All of the ingredients are there, so it’s definitely possible that we’re entering a period of time where Garfield will consistently be in the Oscar hunt. The film is a biopic of Robin Cavendish (Garfield) and Diana Cavendish (Claire Foy), a couple that defied the odds in truly spectacular fashion. When Robin is diagnosed with polio and loses the...

A new trailer has been released for director Andy Serkis' upcoming film Breathe. The movie stars Andrew Garfield (Amazing Spider-Man) and Claire Foy (The Crown) and it's based on the inspiring true story of Robin Cavendish. The film has been described as "a heart-warming and highly-emotional celebration of bravery and human possibility, a love story about living every breath as though it’s your last." I love watching movies like this because there's nothing wrong with a little inspiration in life.
The movie follows "an adventurous couple who refuse to give up in the face of a devastating disease. “Breathe” sets out to offer a very specific kind of emotional experience and never wavers from that goal. The swooning period piece from director Andy Serkis tracks the decades of survival by Robin Cavendish (Andrew Garfield), a man stricken with polio in the ’50s who survived on a breathing machine for some 40 years, and the devotion of his wife Diana (Claire Foy) who stuck by his side that entire time. It’s a gorgeous, romantic drama that earns its emotional resonance without venturing beyond the most familiar beats.
The movie may not register as the most obvious choice of a debut for Serkis, best known as Hollywood’s preeminent motion-capture performer, whose credits range from Gollum in “The Lord of the Rings” to Caesar in the “Planet of the Apes” trilogy, but its elegant, old-fashioned appeal shrouds the sophisticated performance at its center. Garfield, who spends the majority of the...

After starring in two historical dramas last fall, Andrew Garfield is back with another this year. Breathe, which is being billed as the directorial debut of Andy Serkis (although he shot WB’s Jungle Book reboot, which was pushed back to 2018 to give distance from Disney’s hit), follows the Silence star as Robin Cavendish, who was afflicted with polio buts fights the odds to live a full life. Ahead of a a fall release and opening at the BFI London Film Festival, Bleecker Street has now released the first trailer.

The best stories are always those told from the lives of real people and Andrew Garfield seems to have a soft spot for a biographical tale as he yet again steps into the real-life shoes of Robin Cavendish in Breathe in which the trailer has been released.
