We sat down recently with director James McTeigue to talk about his new film, “Ninja Assassin,” based on a screenplay by Matthew Sand and J. Michael Straczynski, and starring Korean pop star Rain, Naomie Harris, Ben Miles, Rick Yune and legendary martial arts performer Sho Kosugi.
As a boy in Sydney, McTeigue was exposed to a variety of world cinema and television and was heavily influenced by ninja television shows like "Shintaro" and "Phantom Agents," and by films such as "Shinobi No Mono." He graduated from Sydney University, where he studied art and film.
McTeigue made his directorial debut helming the iconoclastic screen adaptation of the graphic novel "V for Vendetta." He came to the project through his relationship with the Wachowski brothers, for whom he served as the assistant director on all three "Matrix" films. His other previous film credits as an assistant director include "Speed Racer" and "Dark City.

James McTeigue, the director of V For Vendetta and the forthcoming Ninja Assassin is hopeful that among his upcoming projects will be the adaptation of Richard Morgan’s “Altered Carbon”. “Altered Carbon” is a hard core and hard boiled Sci-Fi novel set 500 years in the future where technology has gotten really groovy but life completely sucks. Here’s the synopsis: “In the twenty-fifth century, humankind has spread throughout the galaxy, monitored by the watchful eye of the U.N. While divisions in race, religion, and class still exist, advances in technology have redefined life itself. Now, assuming one can afford the expensive procedure, a person’s consciousness can be stored in a cortical stack at the base of the brain and easily downloaded into a new body (or “sleeve”) making death nothing more than a minor blip on a screen. Ex-u.N. envoy Takeshi Kovacs has been killed before, but...

James McTeigue has Poe on his plate, and he’s looking to wash it down with some Altered Carbon.
The V for Vendetta director recently sat down with our friends at /Film and talked about life after Ninja Assassin, scheduled for theatrical release on Nov. 25. Apparently, McTeigue’s next outing will be The Raven, a period thriller and fictional account of Edgar Allan Poe’s final five "mysterious" days.
The plot revolves around the poet and writer joining the hunt for a serial killer who is using him as inspiration. Those who took high school English class in this country may recall characters in Poe stories being dispatched by an axe to the head ("The Black Cat"), stuffed up a chimney ("The Murders in the Rue Morgue"), and sealed behind a brick wall ("The Cask of Amontillado").
It certainly sounds like The Raven won’t suffer from a lack of graphic violence.
