20th Century has tapped Argentine director Pablo Trapero to direct an adaptation of Olen Steinhauer’s best-selling spy thriller “The Tourist,” TheWrap has confirmed. Neal H. Moritz and Toby Jaffe are producing.
The book’s plot is described as: “Milo Weaver has tried to leave his old life of secrets and lies behind by giving up his job as a ‘tourist’ for the CIA—an undercover agent with no home, no identity—and working a desk at the CIA’s New York headquarters. But staying retired from the field becomes impossible when the arrest of a long-sought-after assassin sets off an investigation into one of Milo’s oldest colleagues and friends.”
The original 2009 novel inspired three more sequels. It was not only a best-selling novel but also received heaps of praise, with Stephen King saying “The Tourist” was “the best spy novel I’ve ever read that wasn’t written by John le Carré.

All the Old Knives is an American spy thriller released in April 2022. The movie was an adaptation of the 2015 spy novel All the Old Knives by Olen Steinhauer. To help bring the novel’s story to life, director Janus Metz Pedersen worked with a great cast of actors. The movie’s storyline is centered around the CIA’s discovery that one of its agents has gone rogue. When a plane containing 100 people was hijacked in 2012, the CIA was surprised when the terrorists got information about their secret operation. Eight years later, in 2020, the CIA confirmed a leak from

In All the Old Knives, currently streaming on Amazon Prime, Chris Pine plays CIA agent Henry Pelham, a man fated to dig through the past. This is a spy flick tied to the tale of an old flame. Eight years before it’s set, a plane is taken hostage in Vienna, where Henry and his spy colleagues are based. The long and short of it is that things go wrong. All of the hostages — 120 people — lose their lives. Here comes Henry nearly a decade later, with a still-angry Austria demanding...

Thandiwe Newton in All The Old Knives. Courtesy of Amazon.
All The Old Knives is an intense political thriller with a relatively unusual framework. Eight years before the principal action, terrorists hijacked a commercial plane in Europe and wound up killing themselves and over 100 others. We learn that from the get-go. The mystery comes from newly-discovered evidence that there may have been a mole in the CIA who contributed to that disastrous failure. The head honcho Victor Wallinger (Laurence Fishburne) assigns his top agent Henry Pelham (Chris Pine) to head up this new inquiry. Primary suspects among his old colleagues are his then-girlfriend Celia Harrison (Thandiwe Newton) and their veteran department head Bill Compton (Jonathan Pryce).
Pine approaches the task with great reluctance. Newton left him and the spy biz right after the incident, morphing into a suburban mom. Pine still pines for her from afar. The screenplay includes many...

The first line of Amazon’s spy thriller “All the Old Knives” hints at the troubles to come: “Something has gone terribly amiss.”
At one point Kate Winslet, Michelle Williams, and Idris Elba were all rumored to be attached, but fell away over the years. So how, exactly, did Chris Pine and Thandiwe Newton get talked into what feels like an early-aughts, made-for-cable movie?
A stiffly somber Pine, entombed in turtlenecks and long scarves, is introduced like he’s in one of those perfume commercials celebrities try to keep hidden overseas. Despite a few moments of tense intrigue, the rest of the film too often follows suit.
Most of the action hinges on an event that took place several years ago. In flashback, we see shockwaves ripple through the CIA’s office in Vienna, as agency heads Wallinger (Laurence Fishburne) and Compton (Jonathan Pryce) share news of a violent airplane hijacking by Chechen rebels.

"All the Old Knives" is the type of movie we often decry as not getting made anymore in the era of mega-budget blockbusters and micro-budget indies. But Janus Metz, the Danish filmmaker whose credits include "Borg vs. McEnroe" and episodes of hard-nosed shows like "True Detective" and "ZeroZeroZero," did the thing we always say we want: He grabbed a group of big names and made a mid-budget thriller aimed directly at adults.

The Worst Cut is the Deepest: Metz Revels in Tasty Romantic Thriller
Emerging somewhere between the thorny love pacts of Graham Greene and the surefire violence of Alfred Hitchcock, Janus Metz steers an enthralling framed narrative with his sophomore film All the Old Knives, adapted by Olen Steinhauer from his own novel. A throwback to adult thrillers dabbling in romance yet relishing wretchedness, Metz commands an impressive cast in this meaty flashback narrative concerned with the jarring similarities between acts of hate and love.
Chris Pine executive produces yet another project outfitted to showcase his dexterity (although more persuasively than in Tarik Saleh’s The Contractor), but the ensemble project gifts Thandiwe Newton one of her best leading roles in years as his star-crossed lover shattered by the events of a terrorist hijacking.…...

The streaming era, with its glut of viewing options and its omnipresent yet thinly spread advertising, often makes it harder for audiences to get an advance read on a movie. When you see that a couple of actors as good as Chris Pine and Thandiwe Newton have teamed up for a spy thriller that’s being released by Amazon Studios, and that it’s called “All the Old Knives” (a title that sounds like it could be about anything or nothing), you wonder — a little more than you might have 30 years ago — if it’s a project that makes good on their talents or whether it’s another ho-hum slab of product. (Ho-hum product has always been with us; but there’s more of it now.)
So I’m glad to report that It’s not John le Carré, but it’s not thinly patched together pulp either. Watching “All the Old Knives,...

Years ago, Henry and Celia had it made. They were both rising stars in the CIA, with their blossoming romance filling the scant off-time they had from their respective gigs at the agency’s Vienna station. Things were good, and while working for a clandestine intelligence agency isn’t ever easy, Henry and Celia were well-matched both for their jobs and each other. Then: the hi-jacking.
In Janus Metz’s spy thriller “All the Old Knives” — — author Olen Steinhauer adapts his own novel into a stylish and cerebral outing for a decidedly adult audience. One part ticking-clock thriller, one part intense chamber drama, “All the Old Knives” cleverly combines two sub-genres into one satisfying outing, complete with some big ethical questions that linger long after the credits roll. Most edifying, though: The genuine heat that stars Chris Pine and Thandiwe Newton generate as Henry and Celia, two intelligent adults who...

Pine and Newton play former lovers in this watchable Le Carré-esque tale of personal and patriotic betrayals
Maybe a little unexpectedly, Amazon Studios have given us a very watchable and classily upscale espionage drama-thriller in the spirit of John le Carré. Danish film-maker Janus Metz Pedersen directs and Olen Steinhauer adapts his own much-admired spy novella, centred on two former lovers in the cloak and dagger business who meet for dinner in a chi-chi Californian restaurant. The story is in fact inspired by a BBC TV drama that had nothing to do with spies: The Song of Lunch starring Emma Thompson and Alan Rickman.
Henry Pelham (Chris Pine) is a CIA officer haunted by a disastrous event eight years earlier, when he was at the Vienna station: a plane hijacking ended in a hundred deaths because the terrorists were somehow able to anticipate the authorities’ counter-attack. And he is still...

It seems like the Covid-induced fallow period in which there wasn’t enough new movies or TV shows to watch has truly ended. It would probably be impossible to keep up with everything coming out in April, which includes everything from a Covid-themed comedy to a tale of Mormons and murder. It also includes a new film from one of Texas’s greatest filmmakers. Let’s start with that.

In director Janus Metz’s “All the Old Knives,” Chris Pine plays a CIA agent who reconnects with a former colleague and lover (Thandiwe Newton) to find out what she knows about a terrorist hijacking of plane that occurred eight years prior.
The Amazon drama, based on Olen Steinhauer’s 2015 novel of the same name, is told through flashbacks as the two have dinner together at a gorgeous restaurant in Carmel-by-the Sea, Calif. As the meal goes on and wine is consumed, they each begin to remember the horrific hijacking — but also their romance together.
I caught up with Pine, who is sporting a bushy salt-and-pepper beard these days, on Wednesday night at the film’s premiere at the London West Hollywood hotel.
Love the beard. How long did it take to grow out?
It’s sad. It took like six months, but now I have to shave it off.

Thandie Newton has become an on-screen staple over the years: from her debut in “Flirting” in 1991, a role opposite Tom Cruise in “Mission: Impossible II” in, a part in the Oscar-winning “Crash,” and most recently HBO’s “Westworld.” But Newton is setting the record straight — her name is Thandiwe, not Thandie.
The actress revealed the correct spelling of her name in a recent interview with “British Vogue.” Her parents named her Thandiwe, which means “beloved” in Shona, the language of her mother’s people..

That failure haunts the CIA to this day, and Henry seeks to close the book on that seedy chapter. Over a sumptuous dinner, it becomes clear that one of them is...

Academy Award-nominated actor James Cromwell has a ticket to board the third season of the Epix spy series Berlin Station, which premieres December 3.
Cromwell joins in a recurring guest role as Gilbert Dorn, a former CIA legend put out to pasture who appears on a podcast revealing information about past missions. Season three of Berlin Station is currently in production in Budapest and takes place over the course of 11 days in Eastern and Central Europe as Chief of Station Valerie Edwards (Michelle Forbes) guides her team through the high-stakes relationship between Russia, the United States and its vulnerable Nato allies. Is the Kremlin involved in any foul play that could upend a thinly-held World Order?
Berlin Station also features Richard Armitage as Daniel Miller, Richard Jenkins as Steven Frost, Rhys Ifans as Hector DeJean, Leland Orser as Robert Kirsch, Ashley Judd as Bb Yates, and Keke Palmer as April Lewis.
