The final two months of every year are a great time to catch up on horror movies that were released throughout the year, as there typically aren’t all that many new releases coming along at this point in time. The witchtrials were never really about broomsticks and pointy hats, magical powers or turning people into frogs, and Lynne Davison’s grisly feature debut understands this far more than most witch-centric horrors. Set in small town Northern Ireland, it takes on a fair amount of the tried-and-tested scenery, from the deep, dark woods, to the local angry mob, but Davison and screenwriter Matt Harvey’s characters are that little bit more nuanced, making for a wicked wiccan nightmare with some much needed fire at its centre.
Case in point, Mandrake’s lead, easily-irritated parole office Cathy (Deidre Mullins), a wobbly recent-divorcee who dives head first into her no-nonsense work rehabilitating ex-convicts, often missing weekends with her estranged son (Belfast’s Jude Hill) in the process. Cathy finds she’s well and truly met her match though, when she rubs up against her latest case, local legend Mary Laidlaw (Derbhle Crotty...

Each FrightFest at the Glasgow Film Festival there are always a few standouts – Mandrake from Lynne Davison is one of those movies.
When you think mandrake you may instantly think of those cute but lethal plants from Harry Potter – be prepared for something a little more sinister that dives deep into the dark folklore that spans all the way back to The Bible.
This horror marks the feature debut for Davison, with a screenplay from Matt Harvey, takes place in Northern Ireland. We follow probation officer, Cathy (Deirdre Mullins), who takes on the case of recently released murderer Mary Laidlaw aka “Bloody Mary” (Derbhle Crotty) and events take a turn for the worst.
Ahead of the UK premiere of Mandrake we catch up with Lynne Davison to talk tough shooting conditions, influence of Blair Witch & Midsommar and more.

Take one classic 90s action movie, featuring one of the most iconic action heroes of the decade and directed by a king of the genre. Throw in a two-decade wait and a British action star who is almost single-handedly keeping the old-school Dtv vibe alive (and doing a damn good job of it may I add); and you have Hard Target 2.
Twenty-three years. Has it really been that long? I remember the hype around John Woo’s Hard Target – you couldn’t pick up an issue of Impact Magazine for a least a year beforehand without some mention of the film amongst its pages. It’s actually very surprising that we didn’t get a sequel sooner.

Sunday night belonged to Matt Harvey. Monday morning — and now a World Series title — belongs to the Kansas City Royals. After Harvey dominated the first eight innings of Game 5, the Royals broke through to tie the game in the ninth, then scored five runs in the 12th to beat the New York Mets 7-2 and win their first World Series title since 1985. Eric Hosmer sprinted home for the tying run on a groundout to third baseman David Wright in the ninth, and then the Royals wrapped up the title an early morning hit parade against

Narco subs are apparently the new hot property for filmmakers. With one project about the illegal drugs smuggling craft already underway at Fox, the team at Matador Pictures is launching their own version, Hyperbaric, into the choppy cinematic waters, and has hired Roger Spottiswoode to direct it.Dominic Morgan and Matt Harvey wrote the original spec script, which follows four strangers all harbouring secrets who must cooperate to pilot a crudely fashioned narco submarine. It’s carrying a fortune in cocaine, and the Coast Guard is tracking it down…Spottiswoode is currently pushing Midnight Sun, in which a young boy attempts to reunite an abandoned polar bear cub with its mother in Canada, through the post-production process, but he’s still best known for the likes of Tomorrow Never Dies and Air America.Hyperbaric will be competing with Fox’s Narco Sub, which recently snared Antoine Fuqua to direct. Even though Sports Illustrated model Anne Vyalitsnya - better known as Anne V - broke up with her boyfriend, New York Mets player Matt Harvey, a few weeks ago, she looked happier than ever at the beach in Miami on Wednesday. Wearing a black cutout bikini, Anne was all smiles as she frolicked at the beach with her gal pal, splashing around and enjoying the sunshine. It's been a jet-setting week for the supermodel, who was in NYC on Tuesday night to celebrate Sports Illustrated's 50th anniversary issue. Her ensemble was similar to her bikini, with only a mesh, floor-length dress covering her black bra and underwear at the party. View Slideshow ›...

Eric Lavallee: Name me three of your favorite “2013 discoveries”…
Aaron Katz: Calvados (apple brandy from Normandy), Tzolk’in: The Mayan Calendar (a great new board game), Rattlesnakes (a 1984 album by Lloyd Cole and the Commotions), and, as this is a baseball inspired idea, I’ll add Matt Harvey as a fourth pick.
Lavallee: You’ve co-directed a project before so that was not foreign to you. I was wondering how you and Martha agreed to come together on Land Ho! and what was the working process like during the writing phase?
Katz: Because we were viewing the project as somewhat of an experiment, and we agreed right off the bat about what the parameters should be, the collaboration was very smooth. In the writing process we passed things back and forth. At first a collection of ideas and pictures and then, after visiting Iceland to scout, Martha wrote an outline of everything.

After a lengthy hiatus and re-shuffling of personnel, San Jose, CA-based death metal unit Exhumed returned to the battlefield in 2010, and followed shortly after with the studio album All Guts, No Glory – reasserting their position in the field of gore metal, a death/grind subgenre they helped revive in the late '90s (Gore Metal is also the title of their 1998 debut album) and seizing death metal back from the more melodic tendencies that had begun to infuse the genre during that period. Frontman/guitarist Matt Harvey, the band's sole remaining founder, vowed to return to the stripped-down brutality of UK legends Carcass (whose new album arrives next month, I might add) at their simplest and most vicious... and that philosophy, as well as that record, was well-received, paving the way for their fifth full-length act of savagery, which bears a title you probably can't say three times fast. While...

But you’re most likely headed straight to the nude photo spreads, which begin on page 51. (You’re welcome.) So you’re not “reading” alone, we’ll read along with you.

Feeling peaky? You will be after this journey through some of the more disturbing hospitals of cinematic history
There's no safer place is there? A hospital is the only place you'd want to be if something was wrong with you, surely. A gleaming white palace of holistic healthcare where the only thing on the agenda is curing the ailments inflicted by the dangerous world outside. And in among all of this altruistic intent is the jovial atmosphere on the wards; the friendly banter of healthcare professionals and the recovering patients. Such visions recur so often in British cinema and TV history that we must hold a special respect in our collective consciousness for the wards. This can be the only reason for the remorseless 25-year domestic accident-based grind through the ranks of aspiring actors that is Casualty.
The happy-go-lucky pratfalls of the Carry On films aren't the worldwide norm though.

Some movie clips ... one unifying theme ... The Usual Suspects ... The Sixth Sense ... now you get it! Damn you!
Aristotle called it anagnorisis, that moment where the protagonist in a drama suddenly twigs what's been going on this whole time. He identified the famous scene in Oedipus Rex, where the young king realises he's killed his father and had sex with his mother, as the most perfect example of this in action. There's also the bit at the end of every episode of Scooby Doo where the ghost is revealed to have been that kindly old janitor all along.
When they're done well, these epiphany scenes can be genuinely amazing, pulling the rug from under the audience's feet and ensuring that films like The Usual Suspects and The Sixth Sense are talked about for years to come.
