MaryAnn’s quick take… This preposterous, stilted, often hilariously terrible domestic thriller twists maternal yearnings into a toxic parody of femininity. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Thing never to say: “Why don’t you just move into our guest house?” (Assuming you’re stinking filthy rich enough to have a guest house.) Another thing never to say: “You could also be our part-time nanny.” (Assuming you’re stinking filthy rich enough to be able to hire a nanny.) You’d think people in movies would know by now that such offers never end well.
So it is with doctors Brian (Nicolas Cage: Snowden) and Angela (Gina Gershon: P.S. I Love You) when they invite their new friend Katie (Nicky Whelan: The Wedding Ringer) to live in their guest house — with her small daughter...

The advertising campaign for ABC’s newest family sitcom, American Housewife, states that the Otto family at its center is “anything but cookie cutter.” That edge doesn’t track much in the show’s pilot, which is appropriately amusing in a forward-thinking, inoffensive way, but not actually packing much in the way of clever jabs at fat-shaming American culture like its original title did in six words: The Second Fattest Housewife in Westport. Would that have ended well for the show? Probably not. But the creators’ decision (which was likely also ABC’s) to opt for reticence over overt boldness ends up highlighting the somewhat bland nature of American Housewife in one fell swoop.
That former title is essentially the exact plot of the 20-minute pilot, so it has the honest angle going for it as well, and that sits better with the...

What’s more horrifying than vampires, psychos, or zombies? Family gatherings, as we saw in this week’s Inside No. 9...
This review contains spoilers.
2.5 Nana's Party
This week’s episode of Inside No. 9, the second of this series to be directed by Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith, took as its setting something that’s bound to induce a shiver down most spines – a family birthday party. The kind of enforced fun where only one person, at the most, actually wants to be there, and every hug between family members (hardly) hides years of petty resentments. Pemberton and Shearsmith have picked some incredibly scary places for both series one and two – a housebreak, a creepy old mansion, a locked wardrobe – but Nana’s Party shows that the domestic is what’s really dangerous, and a person’s loved ones can be the cruellest.

But the 30-year-old actress broke another barrier Thursday, becoming the first model with Down syndrome to walk during New York's Fashion Week. Brewer modeled as part of Carrie Hammer's "Role Models Not Runway Models" campaign, wearing an original design by Hammer. "There's a woman named Katie Driscoll," Brewer tells People a few hours after her history-making walk, "who has a campaign called 'Changing the Trace of Beauty.' She wrote a letter to Carrie congratulating her on 2014 New York Fashion Week show that...

The EstroGenius Festival, currently in its 15th year, spotlights women artists in theater. It is organized into three separate shows -- Andi’s Night, Deb’s Night, and Sarah’s Night -- that each consist of five short plays totaling about an hour and a half per "Night." At the end of a program, audience members can vote for their favorite performer, writer, and director on a ballot included in the program, and votes can also be cast for favorite play for a one-dollar donation per vote. The winning play receives a special encore performance at the end of the festival.

Producers and studio executives are warming to the idea of putting more actors with disabilities onscreen, according to casting directors and show creators. But disabled performers should be prepared to work hard to distinguish themselves. “You can’t expect to be hired just because you’re in a wheelchair,” said Angela Rockwood, a quadriplegic actor who co-created and stars in the unscripted series “Push Girls,” which airs on Sundance Channel. “If you want to be a serious actor, you’ve got to go out and take the acting classes; you’ve got to bring the juices so that when the roles come in you’re ready.” Even if a disabled performer is ready for her big role, that break won’t always come. Hollywood has a long history of casting able-bodied performers in disabled roles. A recent example advocates point to is NBC’s reboot of “Ironside,” which features Blair Underwood...

First up the lovely Angela heads to the tattoo parlor Freak Chic. Now on with the show! In last night’s Push Girls episode “Surprising News” Angela gets behind the wheel, Chelsie is desperate to walk and Tiphany and Liz play kissy face in the sand.
The show begins with Auti and Angela contorting themselves to get inside of a car. They laugh that it takes them 45 minutes just to head off to lunch.
Then we head over to Chelsie’s and her boyfriend Raymond, who makes this ignorant statement, “You don’t really see gorgeous people in wheelchairs.” What?!
Chelsie is determined to walk again. She practices standing one hour a day to gain strength. Raymond makes a tremendous discovery of the revolutionary ReWalk bionic suit. Here’s a video showing how the suit works.

Welcome to the Push Girls Season 2 premiere recap “Strange Love.” To watch or re-watch Season 1, click here.
This season’s first episode starts off with our blonde bisexual Tiphany riding a mechanical bull.
Tiphany is celebrating her decision to finally move out of Angela’s house and live on her own. Angela is supportive of Tiphany’s relocation (i.e. she will not miss hearing Tiphany having loud sex). But Mia is concerned that Tiphany might not be ready for total independence.
We fast-forward to moving day and Tiphany loves her new tiny apartment. Mia, being the more practical of the two, is worried because the place isn’t on the ground floor. So the girls do a practice-run and escape the building on the stairs in their wheelchairs. They successfully accomplish this task, but with a few mishaps. (Mia almost bit it on the last set of stairs.

On October 15, 2000, Tiphany Adams, then a high-school senior in Northern California, was a passenger in a car that was hit head-on by a drunk driver going 130 mph. Tiphany and the two friends who were in the car with her were all pronounced dead at the scene... until an Emt detected life in Tiphany's body. She was airlifted to the nearest hospital and spent the next three weeks in a coma; when she came out of it, she learned that the injuries she'd sustained in the accident had left her permanently paralyzed from the waist down. Now, almost 12 years later, Tiphany is one of the inspiring stars of the new Sundance Channel reality show "Push Girls," which gives viewers an intimate glimpse into the challenges wheelchair-using women face. In this candid interview, Tiphany shares some of the life lessons she's learned about personal growth, self-awareness, and coping with other people's false assumptions -- and fears.

There’s nary an episode of Sundance’s Push Girls where the viewers don’t learn something about living life as a quadriplegic or paraplegic. "I just celebrated 20 years of my accident," announced Auti Angel at a luncheon at Robert for the reality show Push Girls. Premiering on the Sundance Channel, the show features four feisty and beautiful wheelchair-bound stars: three friends -- Tiphany Adams and Angela Rockwood as well as Auti -- who are car accident survivors, and Mia Schaikewitz, a champion swimmer who as a teen suffered a ruptured blood vessel in her spine, causing her paralysis. So, just what is making Auti, a dancer who cannot walk, so happy about a life change that many would consider tragic?
The reality show format has proven itself as a mesmerizing vehicle for examining life's vicissitudes. Perhaps this entertainment appeals to the voyeur in each of us. Push Girls offers a glimpse into a world that may have been eh, pushed aside.

Reality series aren't going anywhere, as they are easy and cheap to make and "characters" just keep coming out of the woodwork. But when it comes to capturing true, honest portraits of people whose lives are worth watching, none might be more necessary that Push Girls. The Sundance Channel's new docu-series follows four women who have been paralyzed in car accidents and are now living in wheelchairs. But it's not one big sob story — these women are some of the most insightful, active and three-dimensional females on television.
Tiphany Adams is one of those women. After losing the use of her legs from a drunk driver-caused car accident at age 17 (she was the only survivor), Tiphany refused to let anything set her back from achieving everything she wants in life. A model and an actress, Tiphany is also very active in the wheelchair community, alongside her other Push Girls,...
