Matthias Hoene’s 2023 crime thriller Little Bone Lodge can be best described by the phrase that ‘appearances can be deceiving.’ Joely Richardson stars as Mama, the protagonist of the movie, where she’s the protective mother of a teenage girl named Maisy (Sadie Soverall) and the primary caregiver of her disabled husband Pa (Roger Ajogbe). Things were going fine until two brothers, Jack (Neil Linpow) and Matty (Harry Cadby), arrived on a stormy night, seeking immediate help. Soon, everything spins out of control to reveal a dark secret about this wholesome family. Here’s a recap of everything that happens in the 2023 thriller Little Bone Lodge.
Where Does Mama Take Jack?
On a stormy and rainy night, a family of three is celebrating a birthday. The mother and the daughter prepare a cake for the girl’s disabled father, Pa, and they feed it to him. The house is way...

“It’s said that mother is the name for God on the lips of all children,” comes the narrator’s voice as the camera drifts through a remote stretch of the Scottish highlands. Quoting The Crow may not exactly raise expectations for Matthias Hoene’s most recent venture into horror, which screened in the Frightfest strand at the 2023 Glasgow Film Festival, but set your worries aside. This is a great little horror thriller and his best work to date.
It’s founded on a strong script by Neil Linpow, who also stars as Jack, one of two brothers on the run in the aftermath of a robbery. The other is Matty (Harry Cadby), who arrives at the farmhouse, where most of the action plays out, in a panic after their car has gone off the road. Jack is badly injured and at risk of bleeding out. He’s tremendously lucky that the owner.

Hammer Horror: the name rings so ubiquitously in the realms of cinema, and especially around Halloween. Hearing the name, you’re likely to picture one of a number of the British studio’s releases between the 1950s and early 1970s which boasted decadent set design and an intensity of fear and playfulness. A studio of progressive storytelling compared to other offerings of the time, in Hammer’s horror subdivision could be found Technicolor horror (and its subgenres), often sexually and socially provocative, taking classical source material and turning it on its head. Seen as vulgar to the critics, audiences loved the low-budget thrills of Hammer Horror as a refreshing alternative to Hollywood, with two actors in particular becoming distinct heroes of the cycle, Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing. But what are the sounds behind the horror? The wonder of movie soundtracks can be put on best display in the horror genre,...

In an attempt to employ 80s fantasy film traits for a modern teen audience, Cockneys Vs Zombies director Matthias Hoene’s follow-up scuffles like an embarrassing dad at a birthday party yet throws some slick twists into the mix. From Producer Luc Besson and co-writer Robert Mark Kamen (The Karate Kid (84), The Warrior’s Gate should be an adventure film for all ages but feels like watching an over-jaunty kid’s TV show with an apocalyptic hangover. A hyperbolic energy installed by glossy visuals, tight choreography and a punchy plot propels it for the better part but its ill-governed start and finale combine with gaudy designs to form a noxious faux fantasy/ action cocktail which crushes its commendable facets.

The latest from Luc Besson’s B-action-adventure factory owes a debt of gratitude to Zhang Yimou’s The Great Wall for casting a long, obfuscating shadow for it to hide beneath, chiefly due to its Matt Damon-based whitewashing controversy. While Halloween was fast approaching, I was getting incredibly restless with which Horror film or rather films I’d spend the day watching. I mean, do I play safe and watch something like ‘Shaun of the Dead’ or even ‘Alien’ that I must admit, I both love and have seen a million, trillion times each. Or shall I search for a movie that I haven’t seen before. It’s a completely daft question to get myself worked up over; but if you’re such a film buff and Horror fanatic as I am, you should easily understand.
That’s when a little challenge was thrown my way. Why not travel around the world – not in a physical sense, but in the comfort of my home – and find a Horror film I haven’t seen from as many countries as possible. It’s easy enough to do,...

Just in time for Halloween! Independent Lit manager, Hollywood Hustler, and all around nice gal Miss Kailey Alexis Marsh has just dropped the annual Blood List!
The Blood List is the top 13 most liked, unproduced dark genre screenplays of the year, released annually on Halloween. This is the 5th anniversary. Over 100 feature film executives vote on their top 3 favorite dark genre (horror, sci-fi, thriller) screenplays of the year. Seventy-seven of them earned votes, with screenplays requiring a minimum of four votes in order to make the final cut. I’m looking forward to reading some of these. Patrol and Family Vacation seem to be scripts that are in my wheelhouse. Coming in at number one is Ink and Bone, Zak Olkewicz’s horror spec script about a writer held hostage by his own creations that Dimension purchased earlier this year according to Deadline. Meet the 2013 class of The Blood List:...

Welcome to The Last Horror Blog, a biweekly column on all things horror. It’s always been my opinion that the two hardest kinds of movies to make are horror films and comedies. This is mostly because they appear so deceptively simple. Both forms tend to rely on numerous tropes and formulas, which is probably why so many young filmmakers try to work in these fields at the start of their careers – and often fail miserably. Yet, if horror and comedy are challenging genres to conquer on their own, how much harder is it when you combine them? Significantly so in my estimation, but that hasn’t stopped countless filmmakers from trying to merge the two forms over the years. The latest attempt is Cockneys vs. Zombies, filmmaker Matthias Hoene’s...

Filmmakers are a surprising lot. While their films may be brash and bold, they’re personas are often far more quiet and demure than one would expect. With the release of one of the brashest, most over the top and genuinely hilarious comedy horrors in recent memory Cockneys vs Zombies, director Matthias Hoene is no exception. Think the best parts of early Guy Ritchie mixed with the sweetness of Shaun of the Dead and you’ve got Cockneys vs Zombies directed by the German born Hoene, who is quiet yet passionate about his film and he has every reason to be.
Cockneys vs Zombies packs an over the top sense of humor (including the all important Cockney Rhyming Slang) that has come out of the East end of London, several storylines, action, and a one of a kind cast. It’s a film that has travelled across genre film festivals...

Zombies haven’t seen an adversary like the Cockneys yet.
In the British action comedy “Cockneys vs Zombies,” a group of bank robbers team up with retirees to fight their way out of East London after a zombie apocalypse.
Latino-Review had an opportunity to speak with its director Matthias Hoene via phone last week about the production of the film. We discussed various topics including about the cast, gun violence, slow zombies and of course…..Cockneys.
“Cockneys vs Zombies” will be U.S. theaters and VOD this weekend.
The full transcript of the interview is below. Or you can also listen in on the audio recording of the conversation below. Spoiler Alert below.
Latino-Review: Let’s talk about your movie, “Cockneys vs Zombies.” First of all, I want to know is what makes this zombie movie different from the rest of the zombie movies?
Matthias Hoene: That’s a valid question.

Title: Cockneys vs. Zombies Director: Matthias Hoene Starring: Harry Treadaway, Michelle Ryan, Alan Ford, Rasmus Hardiker, Honor Blackman, Georgia King A satisfying, enormously likable genre cocktail, “Cockneys vs. Zombies” not only delivers upon its title promise, but does so with wit and fleet-of-foot aplomb. Director Matthias Hoene, working from a screenplay by James Moran and Lucas Roche, delivers an entertaining romp that successfully purées its many disparate antecedents, imparting flecks of cheeky homage while also standing steady, firm and fine on its own two feet. The story centers around brothers Andy and Terry McGuire (Harry Treadaway and Rasmus Hardiker, respectively), who, along with sis Katy (Michelle Ryan), seize upon a [ Read More ]

Recently, ShockTillYouDrop.com sat down with Matthias Hoene to discuss his latest flick Cockneys vs. Zombies. The up-and-coming director had lots to say about his breakout hit. Hoene gave us the details on walking the line between horror and comedy, the films that influenced the project, why he is a die-hard fan of slow zombies, and more.
The film unfolds something like this: Cockneys vs. Zombies finds a group of bank robbers faced with an unexpected obstacle: a zombie epidemic. The criminals band together to kill zombies but still make sure to set aside ample time for wisecracks. The finished product is like a mash up of a Guy Ritchie film and Dawn of the Dead.
The film is set to hit select theaters Friday August 2nd.

With a name like Cockneys vs. Zombies, you can pretty much guess what you’re in for while watching the latest UK zombie import from director Matthias Hoene. Featuring a handful of recognizable British actors (Alan Ford Ftw!), Cockneys vs. Zombies really doesn’t offer much ingenuity in the zombie subgenre, but it’s a rather enjoyable movie if you’re looking for foul-mouthed, gun-toting octogenarians battling hordes of the undead with a bit of a caper twist thrown in for good measure.
Cockneys vs. Zombies follows gangster brothers Andy (Harry Treadaway) and Terry (Rasmus Hardiker) who are planning a heist in order to stop the retirement home their grandfather lives in from closing down. Of course, nothing goes as planned when a zombie outbreak occurs suddenly, forcing Andy and Terry to retreat and figure out a way to save their grandpa and his friends trapped inside their facility who...

There is a saying in Britain: “It does exactly what it says on the tin.” This colloquialism derives from ’90s-era TV ads for a brand of quick-drying woodstain — which did indeed prominently feature the phrase “quick-drying woodstain” on the tins — but could equally apply to the new U.K. horror film, Cockneys vs Zombies. Starring Harry Treadaway (The Lone Ranger), Michelle Ryan (Bionic Woman), Alan Ford (Snatch), Tony Gardner (The Thick of It) and the late, great British TV icon Richard Briers, the movie finds a group of London-living folks facing off against a bunch of ghouls who aren’t technically “living” at all.

Zombies! You can't stop the slow, steady lurch of films in this horror genre, and this year alone we've seen them fall in love and wreak unholy apocalypse across the entire world. Now, yet another film will dig up the undead for another twist on the brain-eaters, and we've got an exclusive clip to share. "Cockneys Vs. Zombies" finds the very specific locale of London's East End dealing with the problem, and the comedy riff from director Matthias Hoene has some fun with the concept. Former "Bionic Woman" Michelle Ryan, Harry Treadaway ("Control," "The Lone Ranger") and Rasmus Hardiker ("Your Highness") star in the film penned by James Moran ("Severance," episodes of "Doctor Who" and "Torchwood"), which puts some bank robbers into the unlikely position of squaring off against some zombies. In the scene below, we witness the residents of The Bow Bells Care Home getting in on the action...
