Apple TV’s flagship series “The Morning Show” returned last fall for a third season with Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon again electrifying our screens. The show initially followed allegations of sexual misconduct surrounding a male co-anchor (Steve Carell) as the #MeToo movement was explored. Later, the series delved into other political topics and current events such as racial inequality, Russia invading Ukraine, Covid-19, and the Capitol insurrection.
Our guiding lights throughout all of this are Aniston’s powerhouse Alex Levy and Witherspoon’s moral-driven Bradley Jackson. In season three, they have to contend with affairs, media mergers, tech moguls (Jon Hamm), producers, and even going into space.
Season three quite literally explored new territories and critics felt that the show hit its stride, nailing its mad-cap, ludicrously entertaining tone.
Peter Travers (ABC News) noted: “Aniston and Witherspoon, plus star newbie Jon Hamm, power up the best season yet for...

Per Variety, Gyllenhaal is set to reprise his role as Dalton in the upcoming film. Other details, including whether director Doug Liman will also return, are unknown at this time.
According to Amazon MGM Studios, the first installment “has attracted nearly 80 million worldwide viewers to-date. The film premiered on Prime Video March 21 and attracted a record-breaking over 50 million worldwide viewers over its first two weekends, becoming Amazon MGM Studios’ most-watched produced film debut ever on a worldwide basis.”
In her review of Road House, Senior Entertainment Editor Liz Shannon Miller noted that while director Doug Liman may have been fuming about Amazon’s decision to not release the film theatrically, it didn’t exactly matter: “The original film became a cult favorite not theatrically but as...

The perils and plights of adolescence have long been a source of fascination for television audiences. That’s particularly apparent nowadays with Netflix, HBO, Hulu, Showtime, FX, and others vying for zeitgeist dominance with teen-focused dramas playing to a variety of creative strengths. As narratives have gotten more sophisticated overall across the TV landscape, it makes sense that the ways in which we look at stories about young people have also evolved. From “Never Have I Ever” to “Yellowjackets,” TV teens in 2023 are among some of the most rich ever written.

As the streaming wars continue, a new bundle has entered the fray: On Wednesday, May 8th, Disney and Warner Bros. Discovery announced plans to team up for a combined package of services including Max, Disney+, and Hulu.
Because both platforms are owned by the same company, Disney+ and Hulu have been available as a bundle for some time. However, the inclusion of Max marks a cross-corporation collaboration; the new offering will be available in Summer 2024, and will include both ad-supported and ad-free plans.
While this marks relatively unprecedented cooperation in the streaming space between two of Hollywood’s biggest players, Wbd and Disney do have one business practice in common: Both companies have recently removed dozens of titles from their respective services in order to receive tax breaks.

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have released their original score for Luca Guadagnino’s film Challengers.
The score arrives two weeks after Reznor and Ross released Challengers [Mixed], which saw DJ and producer Boys Noize their original compositions from the film and remix them into one continuous, club-ready set. Now, coinciding with the release of Challengers, Reznor and Ross have shared the original score in full.
Starring Zendaya, Josh O’Connor, and Mike Faist, Challengers takes place in the dramatic arena of competitive tennis, and features a love-and-sporting triangle between the three leads. It’s easy to think of the kind of stories that get told in the comic book world as just one genre or tone, but as seen below, graphic novels, comic strips, and other sequential art have offered up an incredible range of storytelling. And these stories have been inspiring great TV shows for years, even before superhero stories dominated the box office.
There were plenty of options that nearly made the list, like the WB’s “Smallville,” which squandered its early potential after running just a few seasons too long. Because one of the most exciting things about these stories is that there’s a rich variety to choose from.

The Transformers franchise has covered so much ground since hitting the big screen in 2007, including planet-eating monsters, dino-bots, and a slew of heavy-handed Michael Bay-approved explosions. Now, they’ve entered a new frontier, with the trailer for Transformers One becoming the first movie trailer to debut in space.
The event kicked off early this morning with a live-streamed countdown showing the one-hour journey into space. When the craft reached its peak above Earth at 125,000 feet, the trailer was revealed, with an introduction from its stars Chris Hemsworth and Brian Tyree Henry.
As the origin story for the robots and beasts at the heart of the franchise, Transformers One is set to be the first-ever fully CG-animated Transformers movie. Hemsworth and Henry are joined by Scarlett Johansson, Keegan-Michael Key, Steve Buscemi, Laurence Fishburne, and Jon Hamm, and the project was executive produced by Steven Spielberg. The Matrix universe is expanding with a new movie helmed by Drew Goddard.
The writer and director, best known for his work on titles like The Martian, The Cabin in the Woods, and Netflix’s Daredevil series, will both direct the film and pen its screenplay. Goddard has plenty of experience with sci-fi, having gotten his start penning episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, and Lost.
Currently untitled, the project will be the first Matrix film to not directly involve creators Lana and Lilly Wachowski, though the former will serve as executive producer. Plot details are currently being kept under wraps, but it sounds like Goddard has a strong vision to extend the franchise.

Lopez recently cancelled tour dates in Nashville, Raleigh, Atlanta, Tampa, New Orleans, Cleveland, and Houston. Variety reported in March that while three new shows were added to the itinerary in New York, Miami, and Toronto, a great deal of Lopez’s 30 shows remained unsold.

Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two debuted in theaters earlier this month, receiving praise from critics and movie-goers alike. Now, joining the ranks of its fans, is none other than Steven Spielberg, who called the movie “one of the most brilliant science-fiction films [he’s] ever seen.”
The comments came in a conversation between Spielberg and Villeneuve at the DGA theater in Los Angeles, which has since been published as an episode of The Directors Guild of America’s podcast, The Director’s Cut. Speaking about the sequel — which follows-up 2021’s Dune — Spileberg commended Villeneuve’s eye for world-building.

Specifically, Hudson referred to the Ghostbusters reboot — which re-launched the franchise in 2016 — as “disappointing.” Speaking to The Independent, he praised the film’s director Paul Feig, and described its all-female leading cast as “brilliantly funny on their own,” but overall felt that the film lacked intention.

Evaluating animated TV can be tricky. Not only is animation a medium that crosses a wide range of genres, but so many of our earliest memories in front of a screen are tied to an animated series, short, or special, and that impermeable nostalgia can be difficult to penetrate with typical critical tools like reason, logic, and other objective criteria. Wes Anderson has won an Academy Award for the live-action short, The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, marking the very first time the acclaimed director has actually won an Oscar.
In the past, Anderson has been nominated for seven Oscars — first with 2001’s The Royal Tenenbaums — but has never won. Some of his films have received Hollywood’s highest accolade, like when Grand Budapest Hotel took home four awards at the 2015 Oscars, but in those cases, even though Anderson’s films won awards, the director himself was not involved in the award.
Now, with The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, though, Anderson is a proper Academy Award-winner. He was not at the ceremony itself, but the award was accepted on his behalf by presenters Issa Rae and Ramy Youssef.
The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar premiered last September, and is based on the 1977 short-story-of-the-same-name by Roald Dahl. With a runtime of only 37 minutes,...

Dune director Denis Villeneuve has some words for… well, words.
In a recent interview with The Times, Denis Villeneuve surveyed the state of modern cinema and came to the conclusion that films have been lacking due to television’s recent storytelling dominance, signaling the reliance on dialogue as a primary reason. “Frankly, I hate dialogue,” the filmmaker said, “Dialogue is for theatre and television. I don’t remember movies because of a good line, I remember movies because of a strong image. I’m not interested in dialogue at all.”
He continued, championing film’s exploration of form over spoon-fed content: “Pure image and sound, that is the power of cinema, but it is something not obvious when you watch movies today. Movies have been corrupted by television.” When asked if he’d be interested in helming another Dune sequel — or a new film in general — without any dialogue whatsoever,...

The digital release of the 2024 musical remake of Mean Girls arrived on February 20th, but not included was a joke utilizing the term “fire crotch,” which was reportedly removed after Lindsay Lohan expressed “hurt and disappointment” over the remark.
The joke in question is delivered by Megan Thee Stallion, portraying herself. Stating her support for the film’s protagonist, Cady Heron (Angourie Rice), she says: “We are going back red. Y2K fire crotch is back!”
Lohan, who portrayed Cady in the 2004 original and even makes a cameo in the new 2024 film, expressed her distaste for the joke through a publicist, Leslie Sloane, who told The Messenger that she was “very hurt and disappointed by the reference.” The term “fire crotch” was previously associated with her in 2006 when socialite Brandon Davis made derogatory comments about her in a viral video featuring Paris Hilton.

Snoop Dogg’s interested in expanding his circle of collaborators. “I’d love to do a song with Dolly Parton, can you hook that up?” Snoop told reporters at the Television Critics Association winter press tour on February 14th, adding that “she brings it.”
The rapper and media personality was making a surprise appearance on a panel discussing NBC’s upcoming broadcast of the upcoming 2024 Olympics. Snoop had previously offered up commentary on the 2021 games alongside Kevin Hart, and NBC will be bringing him to Paris to provide live commentary on this year’s games as well.
The mention of Parton didn’t come out of nowhere, as the country (and now rock!) performer previously released her cover of Queen’s “We Are the Champions/We Will Rock You” during the summer of 2023 as a celebration of the upcoming Paris games. However, NBC Olympics executive producer Molly Solomon added that...

Almost three years to the day that “Fargo” wrapped its fourth installment, which starred Chris Rock and featured an acclaimed performance by future Oscar-nominee Jessie Buckley, its highly-anticipated fifth has finally arrived. Noah Hawley’s FX anthology series debuted almost a decade ago in 2014 and has been alternating between contemporary and period-set seasons. Since the last set of episodes took place in the 1950s and explored the war between Kansas City crime syndicates, the new season is set in 2019 and centers on Juno Temple’s character, whose happy home life conceals a dangerous past.
After its fourth installment failed to live up to the high expectations that the Emmy Award-winning series had previously set, this new season finds the show back as strong as ever. As of this writing, it has an 80 score on Metacritic, indicating “generally favorable” reviews. Even better, it has a perfect 100% freshness score on Rotten Tomatoes,...

Time for Hollywood to finally get back to work. The Screen Actors Guild and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) have reached a new three-year agreement, one that will end the strike that shut down film and television production beginning July 14th, 2023.
The SAG-AFTRA TV/Theatrical Committee approved the agreement in a unanimous vote on Wednesday. On Friday, the deal will go to the union’s national board for formal approval. However, the strike will end at 12:01 am Thursday, November 9th, at which point actors will be permitted to return to work.
The 2023 strike was the first time since 1980 that SAG as an organization took to the picket lines, after failing to secure a new contract with the AMPTP. Many of the issues that led to the labor action were similar to the issues that led to the Writers Guild of America also going on strike this year,...

After a historic summer, Greta Gerwig’s smash-hit film, Barbie, arrives in IMAX today, and previously unseen post-credit scenes are coming with it. In a new interview with Variety, cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto has shared that the new footage is just the tip of the iceberg as far as the movie’s unseen scenes go. Giving insight into what ended up on the cutting room floor, he highlighted one deleted scene that gave Gerwig quite a chuckle: a moment with Michael Cera inspired by Steven Spielberg’s Jaws.
In the film, Cera portrays Allan — the now-discontinued Mattel doll intended to be Ken’s friend — and delivers the movie’s “most reliably funny jokes,” according to Consequence’s Senior Entertainment Editor Liz Shannon Miller, who even suggested that Cera’s memorable performance is Oscar-worthy. Now that Greta Gerwig’s record-breaking Barbie is out, all the twists, turns, and painfully-relatable themes are being digested by a nation of movie-goers… just like something was, ehm, digested by some characters in an early cut of the film. That’s right, folks, Gerwig has confirmed that there was once a version of Barbie that included a “fart opera.”
The news came in an interview with IndieWire, in which Gerwig revealed that of the many scenes she and editing collaborator Nick Houy had hoped to include in the film, they did have to cut one (pun intended). “We had, like, a fart opera in the middle [of Barbie],” Gerwig said. “I thought it was really funny. And that was not the consensus.”

The world has changed a lot since “Black Mirror” premiered in 2011; mostly as the lines between fact and fiction blur. The sci-fi show from Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones became shorthand for our bleakest and most dystopic realities, whether that was a caricature rising to the highest office in the nation, technology used to monitor and manipulate human behavior, or alternate realities and artificial intelligence.

Back in December 2022, Preston Mutanga combined two of his biggest interests by recreating the first trailer for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse shot-for-shot using Lego blocks and figures. Once the ambitious project was done, the 14-year-old uploaded the clip online and caught the attention of the film’s producers, who would go on to hire him as an animator for a scene set in a Lego universe.
In an interview with The New York Times, producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (both of whom directed The Lego Movie) said they reached out to him after deciding to include a Lego sequence in Across the Spider-Verse.
“We found out that it was a 14-year-old kid who made it and we were like, ‘This looks incredibly sophisticated for a nonadult, nonprofessional to have made,'” Miller told The Times. “It blew us all away, including some of the best animators in the world.

Series finales are fickle things. Some of them have the power to redeem an entire show, to reframe the audience’s perceptions of what came before. Those massive twists rarely land, so more often than not, TV shows end not with a bang, but with a melancholy whimper.
And then there are the other times when a big series finale swing goes so awry that it can undo many seasons’ worth of goodwill. Recency bias rears its ugly head and some lifelong fans use these last episodes as a reason to sour on a particular show.
That’s why that the best finales don’t always come from the best shows. “Battlestar Galactica,” “How I Met Your Mother,” “Dexter,” and more often reached brilliance over the course of their runs, but rang less true with their final notes. Some of IndieWire’s choices below come from shows that wouldn’t...

Nickelback are one of the most successful rock acts of the 21st century, but for one reason or another they are also one of the most reviled bands in modern history. That said, things apparently are looking a bit cheerier for the Canadian rockers, as frontman Chad Kroeger thinks “there’s been a softening” in the hatred in recent years.
When asked about the hate the band has received over the years in a new Zoom conversation with Arizona radio station Kfma (as transcribed by Blabbermouth), Kroeger responded, “That kind of used to be a thing. I shouldn’t say ‘that kind of used to be’ — that was definitely a thing for a long time. And I think there’s been a softening — there really has, thankfully.
The singer, who was enjoying a dip in a swimming pool during the interview (not exactly gonna help with the “softening”), continued, “I...

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 writer and director James Gunn has been recognized by PETA for telling the origin story of Rocket Raccoon’s early days being raised in a scientific laboratory.
Gunn received the “Not a Number” Award on Monday, May 8th — just days after the film’s release in theaters. The final installment of the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy hearkens back to the cruel experimentation Rocket endured at the hands of the High Evolutionary, from whom he was eventually able to escape.
PETA hopes everyone can take inspiration from his story to speak out against animal experimentation and demand that corporations, universities, and government agencies switch to research methods that don’t involve animals.
“Through Rocket, James Gunn has put a face, a name, and a personality on the millions of vulnerable animals being cycled through laboratories as we speak,” said PETA Senior Vice President Lisa Lange in a statement.

Filter are back with a bran -new song, “Face Down.” The track follows the band’s previously released single, “For the Beaten,” which dropped in October 2022. Both tracks will appear on the industrial rock act’s as-yet-untitled forthcoming album, due later this year via Golden Robot Records.
The new single “Face Down” features soulful verses that complement Filter’s classic sound, featuring dark, electronic beats, thick guitars, and frontman Richard Patrick’s layered, eerie vocals.
“‘Face Down’ speaks to the hate and negativity plaguing the world today,” Patrick said in a statement. “I wrote it after being inundated with lies, deceptions, and pure vitriol I saw on social media. I’m pumped. I can’t wait for everyone to hear the full album.”
In addition to the new song, Filter will present “California Screamin’,” a global concert stream performed live from Los Angeles via the platform Hitkor on June 17th.

Tim Bachman, a founding guitarist and vocalist of Bachman-Turner Overdrive, has died at the age of 71.
Bachman had been in hospice care after battling brain cancer, and his son announced his passing in a Facebook post. His death comes only a few months after the passing of his brother Robbie (Bto’s longtime drummer) in January.
Tim was one of the three Bachman brothers that helped form the classic rock group, originally under the name Brave Belt. He performed on Bto’s first two albums — Bachman-Turner Overdrive (1973) and Bachman-Turner Overdrive II (1973) — appearing on such hits as “Takin’ Care of Business” and “Let It Ride.”
He left the band in 1974 (replaced by Blair Thornton), citing a desire to spend more time with family, although his brothers claimed he was fired for violating the band’s policy of no alcohol or drugs on the road.
Tim eventually returned to Bto in 1984 following...

"Community" began as a conventional single-camera sitcom that balanced humor with romantic drama. But the series became increasingly ambitious through its first three seasons. Episodes parodied action films, zombie thrillers, and "My Dinner With Andre." Background gags and Easter eggs trained audiences to root through each episode for clues. The series could also nail the television fundamentals, as in season 2's bottle episode "Cooperative Calligraphy." "Community" was made by people who loved TV, and were willing to pull every trick in the book to do that love justice. Future seasons would challenge that love, of course. The departure of showrunner Dan Harmon led to a messy season 4, and even his return in the following two seasons wasn't enough to keep the cast from leaving for new and exciting opportunities. But the show's best episodes were so exceptional that it didn't really matter. "'Community' was always a show about underdogs,...
