Between its striking title, lurid artwork, and the timing of its release — 1981 bore the likes of Halloween II, Friday the 13th Part 2, My Bloody Valentine, The Burning, The Funhouse, The Prowler, and Happy Birthday to Me — one might mistake Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker (also known as Night Warning) for a run-of-the-mill slasher flick. While it vaguely fits in the slice-and-dice mold, the film is anything but generic.
The prologue — which may have inspired Final Destination 2‘s unforgettable opening sequence — was directed by Michael Miller with cinematography by Jan de Bont, but Miller was let go by the production after falling behind schedule. He was replaced by TV veteran William Asher, who shot the remainder of the film with Robbie Greenberg as director of photography.
14 years after his parents were killed in an over-the-top car crash, Billy Lynch witnesses his infantilizing aunt-turned-guardian, Cheryl Roberts, kill a repair man in cold blood.

We’ve touted Kanopy as a hidden gem and one of the best kept secrets in streaming since the days when Paramount+ was still CBS All Access. The streaming marketplace has grown so much since then that it is now ready to shrink, but Kanopy is well-positioned to survive the coming consolidation thanks to its unique business model.
Kanopy serves two very different masters: libraries and movie studios. Kanopy is the ad-free streaming service that you did not know you could (potentially) access with just a library card or a university ID. Its library consists of classic films and new releases, and costs the end user exactly…free.
Best of all? Kanopy is profitable, Gm Jason Tyrrell tells IndieWire.
The money flows like this: Tax dollars pay libraries, libraries pay Kanopy (when a member streams at least 30 seconds of its content) for access, and Kanopy pays studios to license their content,...

At a time when Netflix, Amazon, Apple and the rest of the for-profit streaming universe are looking to ramp up subscriber numbers and revenue – because they are, after all, in the moneymaking business – Kanopy is something of a revelation. Modern Family‘s Ed O’Neill is learning a little bit more about his real family in the latest episode of PBS‘s Finding Your Roots, and we have an exclusive first look. The actor who is also known for playing Al Bundy in Married… with Children, is sitting down with Henry Louis Gates Jr. to uncover his past, particularly the bravery of his ancestor Bridget Tyrrell, whose remarkable acts of kindness, bravery, and care during the Civil War are still remembered. (Credit: PBS) In the clip above, O’Neill reads her obituary, provided to him by Gates Jr., who notes the year of publication to be 1897, decades after the Civil War ended. Reading aloud, O’Neill relays the obituary’s highlighted sections, saying, “During the late war, Mrs. Tyrrell had two sons and 15 nephews in the northern army and made several trips to the southern battlefields to administer to their wants.

In the 1980s, it was too easy for a film like Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker to get lost in the horror shuffle. Icons like Freddy and Jason were coming into the world and franchise fever was catching. A “video nasty” label also did little to help this hidden gem find an audience overseas in the U.K. Yet after years of being trapped on VHS under the name of Night Warning, this film finally surfaced on both DVD and Blu-ray and, for a short time, the streaming service Shudder. Cult followers relived what might have felt like a fever dream back in the day, and new fans have since latched on to the film’s sensational excesses.

Abu Dhabi, Jan 14 (Ians) Francesco Molinari, at 40, a three-time member of winning Ryder Cup teams, gave his young teammate, Nicolai Hojgaard, 21, a first-hand exhibition of team play as they won both their matches on the second day of the Hero Cup.
Combined with the half point they got from the first day, they stay unbeaten after two days two and a half points out of three.
The morning session was tied with both teams taking two and a half points each and in the afternoon it was still even till Robert MacIntyre, who had so far not lost a match, and Seamus Power lost 2&1 against the French-Italian pairing of Victor Perez and Guido Migliozzi.
That gave Continental Europe a 3-2 win in the session and took the total score to eight and a half against the six and a half points for Gb & I with 10 singles coming up on Sunday.

After bearing his fangs as Dracula yesterday in Chris McKay’s Renfield trailer, Nicolas Cage is ready to give an update about his Spider-Man Noir character from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. With so many Spider-people swinging in for Sony and Marvel’s animated sequel, Spider-Man Noir will be among them. Wrong. According to an exclusive report from Screen Rant, Cage says his moody and monochromatic version of the wall-crawler will not appear in the sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
While talking about Cage’s new (and first) Western film, The Old Way, Screen Rant’s Caitlin Tyrrell asked if the unpredictable actor was involved in the upcoming animated film. Sadly, the answer is no.
“You’d have to ask Sony,” Cage confessed to Tyrrell. “I don’t know what’s going on with that. No one’s spoken to me about that. Ask them. I don’t know. I really don’t.
