Berlin’s virtual 2021 European Film Market, many companies feared, would be an underwhelming affair. Wrapping today, at least officially, the online event built over this week to finally give cause for much needed optimism. Ten takeaways from this week’s event.
Berlin’s Netflix Film Market
For the last two years, a Netflix panel was the hottest ticket at the Berlinale Series Market Conference. But the U.S. streaming giant, having made signature buys at Sundance, used to keep a lower acquisition profile at the EFM. No longer. This was the year when a streamer finally took over the EFM. Netflix bought two of the hottest tickets at Berlin’s EFM stumping up $18 million for the U.S on Liam Neeson action pic “The Ice Road,” a record U.S. EFM deal, and $15 million for the U.S. and Latin America on Colin Firth starrer “Operation Mincemeat,” from See-Saw and Cohen Media Group.

Lupin is “a great achievement, not only for us but for all producers around the world,” said Gaumont Vice CEO Christophe Riandée, who is also a producer of the hit Netflix series, during a panel at the European Film Market today. The Omar Sy-starrer which has been a worldwide smash on streaming, is produced by Gaumont Television and has scored record-breaking numbers for a French series on the service. The first part of Season One was made available in early January and the second half of S1 is due this summer.
Speaking to Lupin’s success Riandée said, “There’s no more borders anymore… it’s a proof of concept.” The overall result is, “Wherever you are, whatever language you speak, you have access to a global audience and I think it’s a great sign for all the creators and all the producers of the world that they can reach a fanbase audience.

Global film and TV executives, including “Elizabeth” producer Alison Owen and “Shakespeare in Love” producer David Parfitt, have spoken out about Harvey Weinstein’s guilty verdict, calling it a “seismic” victory that will bring about immutable change.

Nordic Noir is alive and thriving, according to Rikke Ennis, founder and CEO of Copenhagen-based REinvent Studios, which specialises in the packaging, financing and sales of Nordic content.
“What is clicking right now [with buyers] is Nordic noir,” Ennis told an audience at Flanders Image’s CONNeXT event in Ghent this week where she was giving a keynote speech.
“It still works extremely well. Crime and thrillers are always an easy sell. But there is a new touch to it as there is a bigger demand for female protagonists and the stories have become more personal.

Streaming and digital aggregator execs spoke at the CONNeXT event in Ghent.
Executives from Europe’s leading niche streaming services and digital aggregators said they were ready to embrace the arrival of the new Us streaming platforms by investing in new talent and digital skills.

I don’t think anyone should be in the business of self-indulgence. You have to make a film for an audience and it’s the same with a series.

Scandi brands Zentropa, REinvent and TrustNordisk are launching NutAlone, a new streamer of European films and TV dramas.
Rikke Ennis, CEO of Copenhagen-based packaging, sales and financing company REInvent Studios, has spent the last couple of years conceptualizing NutAlone with her former TrustNordisk colleagues and Zentropa CEO Anders Kjærhauge.
Their idea was to dust off titles left on shelves by distributors and bring them out to the world digitally, while helping rights holders to maximize revenues.
“Having worked in the distribution biz for over two decades, having been to all the festivals and tried to get the best arthouse films to the world, I’ve realized how complicated it is,” says Ennis.
“If you have Lars von Trier or Thomas Vinterberg, the whole world is interested, but with smaller films, even those selected at festivals, you will sell five-to-eight territories max. The rest of the world will remain available as...
