The film and TV production boom in the U.K. came to a grinding halt in 2023 amid the Hollywood writers and actors strikes.
According to the British Film Institute, the total spend on film and high-end TV production last year reached £4.23 billion ($5.37 billion) from 394 productions, down 35 percent from £6.27 billion ($7.72 billion) in 2022 as previously reported.
U.K. production spend is counted in the statistics for the year in which principal photography starts, which means shoots started in 2023 but then paused because of the strikes are fully attributed to 2023.
Or as the BFI noted: “If a production starts but then pauses, the total spend for the production is incorporated into the period’s spend data at that point, even if production restarts and concludes much later.”
Despite the drop in spend in 2023 following two years of records, the BFI highlighted that “this is the fourth-highest combined film and high-end TV spend reported...

Call it the expanding Paddingtonverse… Or don't we're not the boss of you. But Jim Broadbent's favourite little bear is making his way on a new journey — to the stage. Yes, we've reached the point in the :a[Paddington]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/reviews/paddington-review/' } cycle where the decision has been made to turn his story into a stage musical.
Studiocanal, which produced the (so far) two movies is backing this one, joining forces with Sonia Friedman Productions and Eliza Lumley Productions. So far, few details have been released, beyond a plan to debut in 2025 and that Tom Fletcher of boyband McFly has signed on to write the music and lyrics.
“It is a privilege to be creating a new musical about this gorgeous and beloved little bear with such a wonderful team,” Friedman and Lumley said in a joint statement. “The magic of Paddington is that,...

Paul King gifted us with two of the most charming movies of all time: Paddington and Paddington 2. The studio was keen to get the ball rolling on another sequel, so King was faced with the choice of signing on to direct Paddington 3 or try something new with Wonka. While speaking with THR, the director said that the choice wasn’t an easy one.
“It was really difficult, because I’d spent eight years with the bear and I felt such incredible love for him,” King said. “He’s an animated character, and the design and the love that went into every single follicle was labor intensive and done with such heart. So it’s kind of like sending your kid off to school and going, ‘I hope you’ll be okay!’ But I also know it was the right thing to do.“
Paul King added that “because there’s so much Paddington source material,...

Black Bear has launched international sales on “Wicker,” a twisted romance starring Oscar winner Olivia Colman and Oscar nominee Dev Patel. Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson will direct from a script they adapted from Ursula Wills-Jones’ short story “The Wicker Husband.”
“Wicker” will start production in 2024. Per the logline, “On the outskirts of a village by the sea, lives a Fisherwoman (Colman); smelly, single and perpetually ridiculed. One day, fed up with her stuffy, small-minded neighbors, she commissions herself a husband to be made from wicker (Patel). In an otherwise conservative town, this unconventional romance sparks outrage, jealousy and chaos.”
Topic Studios and Tango will finance and produce the film with Colman, Ed Sinclair and Tom Carver from South of The River, David Michôd and Brad Zimmerman for Yoki, Inc. and Justin Lothrop and Brent Stiefel for Votiv, who originated and financed development.
Colman received an Oscar for starring in Yorgos Lanthimos’ “The Favourite.

StudioCanal, which is fully backing the movie, will release Paddington in Peru in the U.K., France, Germany, Benelux, Australia/New Zealand, and Poland. Sony Pictures holds rights for the rest of the world, excluding Russia, China and Japan.
Paddington in Peru will be the feature debut of Dougal Wilson, the award-winning commercials and music video director. Exclusive: Sony Pictures has snapped up U.S., Canada and key international for Studiocanal and Heyday Films’ threequel Paddington in Peru.
Sony, which has a long history with live-action kids movies, i.e., Lyle Lyle Crocodile and Goosebumps, always wanted in on this franchise, and now they’ve notched it. When the North American rights for Paddington 2 came up in a $30 million-plus auction, Sony was one of the bidders with Warner Bros, though that sequel ultimately went to Heyday’s Harry Potter studio. Through two movies worldwide, Paddington has reaped over a half-billion at the box office with the franchise counting such BAFTA nominations as Best British Film and Best Adapted Screenplay.
Deadline first told you that the threequel was in the works. Paddington in Peru sees the bear embark on a new adventure that will take him from Windsor Gardens to Peru in the latest installment of the Paddington franchise.

Hang on to your hat — especially if that’s where you keep your marmalade sandwiches — because Paddington 3 will find the fuzziest member of the Brown family returning to his old stomping grounds in “Darkest Peru.” Deadline reports that the third installment in the franchise will begin production on July 24th, 2023, and will film on-location in both England and Peru. The threequel will be helmed by commercial director Dougal Wilson.
The first Paddington film came out in 2014 and began with the little bear’s journey from “Darkest Peru” to Paddington Station. 2017’s Paddington 2 opened with a flashback to his jungle home, before picking up in the hustle and bustle of London.
Paul King helmed these first two installments, but he’s tied up directing Timothee Chalamet in Wonka. “After ten years of working on the Paddington movies, I feel absurdly protective of the little bear, and I’m delighted...

Break out the marmalade. After much back and forth over whether or not it would happen, “Paddington in Peru” (aka “Paddington 3”) is now most definitely happening, with the threequel set to begin shooting in July. Deadline was first to report the news. Per the outlet, director Dougal Wilson is set to begin filming on July 24.
Commercials director turned first-time feature filmmaker Wilson takes the reins from franchise director Paul King, who directed 2015’s “Paddington” and 2017’s “Paddington 2.”
“After 10 years of working on the ‘Paddington’ movies, I feel absurdly protective of the little bear, and I’m delighted that Dougal will be there to hold his paw as he embarks on his third big-screen adventure,” King said in a statement. “Dougal’s work is never less than astounding: funny, beautiful, heartfelt, imaginative, and totally original. Aunt Lucy once asked us to ‘Please Look After This Bear.’ I know Dougal will do so admirably.

Paddington fans can rest easy... because filming on a second sequel has now been given a date.
While a third movie based around the adventures of Paddington Bear, was announced back in 2016, recent reports had suggested the project was stuck in development limbo.
Speaking to Collider earlier this year, Paddington voice actor Ben Whishaw claimed: “I haven’t read this script and I don’t even know when we’re due to shoot it. I don’t know. I thought it would be happening by now, but I don’t know. It’s gone silent in the way that sometimes these things do.
“Maybe that just means they’re still working on it, or maybe it means it’s not happening, or you just don’t know.”
The previous film in the franchise, the enthusiastically praised Paddington 2, was released back in 2017.

Great news for those who wanted their beloved fictional brown bear, Paddington, to return to the big screen: The much-anticipated third installment in the "Paddington" film series is finally happening! This is a triumph for long-time fans of the acclaimed film franchise, as there were doubts earlier this year that we might not be getting a "Paddington 3" after all. Now that the film is officially slated to start production sometime in June (via Deadline), it's time to whip up some delicious marmalade sandwiches in celebration of the news.
Officially titled "Paddington in Peru," the third installment in the "Paddington" film series will see the return of the highly-intelligent brown bear, who will most likely travel back to his birthplace, Peru. This time, music videos and commercials director Dougal Wilson will be helming this much-awaited sequel, with Ben Whishaw reprising his role as the voice of the titular charming bear.

Deadline has the info on threequel, and though its plot is currently being kept under wraps, as the title suggests, this entry finds the little bear in “deepest, darkest Peru,” which is his birthplace.
Paul King, Simon Farnaby, and Mark Burton, the collaborators of both Paddington 1 and 2, are also creating the story for this installment. The screenplay is set to be penned by Mark Burton, Jon Foster, and James Lamont. Phew. It was all looking a bit quiet for a while there on the Paddington front – given that both Paddington and Paddington 2 are widely acclaimed films, it’s taken a while for the threequel to emerge. Last summer, we learned that the next Paddington film would be titled Paddington In Peru, and take the beloved bear back to his original jungle home – but beyond there, very little news has emerged. Until now.
Worry not, everyone – Paddington In Peru is still happening, and it’s happening soon. As reported by Deadline, it’s due to enter production this summer, with cameras rolling from July. And, as we’ve known for a while now, it’s going to be a filmmaker handover, with Paul King otherwise caught up in the chocolate factory with Wonka. Instead, In Peru will mark the directorial feature debut of Dougal Wilson (no pressure!), but with King,...

Paul King, the director of the Paddington movies, is putting on his dancing shoes.
King has come aboard to direct Sony Pictures’ untitled Fred Astaire drama that has Tom Holland attached to star as the golden age film and dance star.
Amy Pascal, Rachael O’Conner, Ben Holden and Josh Hyams are producing.
Sony is keeping the logline details under the top hat, but it is known that the project centers on the relationship between Astaire and his sister, Adele Astaire. The two were inseparable for more than 20 years, moving out of a simple Midwestern vaudeville act in the early part of the 20th Century to Broadway and London’s West End in the 1920s. Adele Astaire was initially the face of the act, but eventually, Fred’s consummate stage skills eclipsed hers. “Bad Behaviour” is a family affair in more ways than one. It centers on mother Lucy and daughter Dylan, both of whom work in the entertainment industry. Alice Englert (“Ginger & Rosa”), who wrote, directed, and stars as Dylan, would know a little something about that — she’s Jane Campion’s daughter. The “Power of the Dog” auteur even makes a cameo in the film.
Though “Bad Behaviour” is playfully meta, it’s not needlessly self-referential. Englert separates herself as a filmmaker with this screwy tale of modern narcissism (although she and her mother do both have a thing for guru characters). “Bad Behaviour” is bright and lively (not Campion’s wheelhouse) but, like its characters, it’s also aimless.
Englert clearly wants to say something meaningful about mothers, daughters, acting, female celebrity, social-media culture, spirituality, and mental health, but she’s not yet deft enough to tackle all of these things at once.

Cannes — Top European powerhouse Studiocanal has renewed its global deal with Nickelodeon which will board Season 3 of CG animated megahit “The Adventures of Paddington.”
Marking most surely one of the biggest single title content deals unveiled at this year’s Mipcom, the Nickelodeon renewal for Season 3 comes as Studiocanal has also unveiled a slew of second-window deals on Season 1 after the title’s hugely successful global rollout overseen, like Season 2, by Nickelodeon. It comes, moreover, just months after Studiocanal announced in June that Dougal Wilson is attached to direct “Paddington” 3, the third feature film in the franchise.
Together, the renewal, sales and new movie confirm “Paddington” as not only the biggest franchise at Studiocanal – at a time when the production-distribution-international sales giant is looking to expand its brand activity, says Studiocanal CEO Anna Marsh – but as one of the most powerful in Europe.

The Directors Guild of America announced only a handful of nominations on the TV front on January 6, after a glitch in voting. Jill Soloway, who won in 2015 for helming “Transparent,” was left off the ballot for the series finale. So the guild is letting its members recast their votes in that category. The DGA will reveal the results of that on Friday, along with the nominees for drama series and specials. (The feature film nominations are still a go for Tuesday.)
Among Monday’s nominations, “Fosse/Verdon” led the way with three bids in the TV Movie or Limited Series race: Emmy nominees Thomas Kail and Jessica Yu are joined by Minki Spiro. Emmy champ Johan Renck (“Chernobyl”), Emmy nominee Ava DuVernay (“When They See Us”) and Vince Gilligan (“El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie”) round out the race.
