Wide House is to handle international sales on veteran French director Claire Simon’s latest feature documentary The Village which she presented at the Pitching du Réel during the Doc Outlook - International Market (Docm) in Switzerland’s Nyon this week.
The €604,000 production by Petit à Petit Production centres on a documentary film festival held in the village of Lussas in South Ardeche that has created an internet TV platform and production studio for independent documentaries, and on the resistance to this from the local farming community.
Simon, whose previous feature documentary The Graduation (Le Concours) was also handled by Wide House and won the Documentary Award at last year’s Venice Film Festival, explained that The Village is being conceived as a double format with a documentary series and a feature film. The Australian International Documentary Conference (Aidc) has announced the 10 docos selected for its pitching forum, The FACTory.
Presented by Film Victoria and Screen Australia, the forum will allow the selected filmmakers to pitch their projects directly to international buyers, commissioners, and distributors. The forum takes place in front of a live audience.
Over 25 commissioning bodies are set to attend the event, including Tribeca Film Institute, National Geographic, Foxtel, BBC Storyville, Al Jazeera English, Canal +, Nhk Japan, American Documentary | Pov, Discovery and Universal Pictures.
The best pitch on the day will receive a marketing and distribution deal from The Solid State and Fan-Force — including $5,000 towards a theatrical trailer, poster and website, and $3,700 of distribution and social media marketing support services..

India’s National Film Development Corp (Nfdc) has unveiled the 18 projects selected for the Co-production Market at this year’s Film Bazaar, including new works from Geetu Mohandas, Mostofa S. Farooki [pictured] and Haobam Paban Kumar.
Mohandas, whose first feature Liar’s Dice screened at Sundance and won six international awards, is bringing her new project Insha’allah to Film Bazaar, with Jar Pictures attached as producer. Farooki, whose credits as director include Television and Ant Story, is producing fellow Bangladeshi director Abu Shahed Emon’s A Foolish Man.
Manipuri filmmaker Haobam Paban Kumar, whose debut Lady Of The Lake premieres in New Currents at Busan this week, is again working with Oli Pictures on Joseph’s Son.
