This article contains spoilers for Star Trek: Picard and WandaVision.
“What is grief, if not love persevering?” asks Vision in an oft-quoted scene from WandaVision. The sympathetic synthazoid intended the question as a validation of his partner Wanda’s feelings of despair after losing so much in Avengers: Endgame. But it’s also been a good way to describe the state of Marvel Television since WandaVision finished its single-season run.
When WandaVision debuted on Disney+ in 2021, the show promised an exciting era for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, still then its apparent prime. Not only did the show focus on a fan-favorite, but little explored character, but it also featured a compelling storytelling style well-suited for the television medium. However, what started as a riff on the history TV sitcoms became a standard superhero battle, complete with Vision battling a duplicate of himself.

The American filmmaker’s Philip Anderson Lord and Christopher Robert Miller gained fame for their work on the Spider-Verse franchise, earning an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018).
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
Later, they went to make the sequel of their first Spider: Man animated film—Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023). Following the success of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, their focus is now on the franchise’s next installment—Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. It will follow Miles Morales as he tries to prevent Spot from destroying the multiverse.
With Lord and Miller’s proven track record of success in the animated superhero genre, James Gunn now wants them to helm a Dcu project. What’s more interesting is that fans have come up with some interesting ideas, too.

Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series spotlighting the year’s most talked-about scripts continues with Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, the follow-up to Sony, Sony Pictures Imageworks and Marvel’s groundbreaking Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse which won the Animated Feature Oscar in 2019.
Phil Lord returned to co-script the sequel with his Lord Miller cohort Christopher Miller and Dave Callaham. Joaquim Del Santos, Kemp Powers and Justin K. Powers directed the ambitious sequel, which featured multiple animation styles and more than 280 variations of Spider-Man.
This plot centers on continuing the exploits of Miles Morales as Brooklyn’s own Spider-Man. Reunited with Gwen Stacy, he is catapulted across the Multiverse where he encounters a team of Spider-People — from Lego Spider-Man and Mumbattan’s Pavitr Prabhakar to the Daniel Kaluuya-voiced Spider-Punk — charged with protecting its existence. As I tell my students, choices have consequences. Brilliantly, several choices made by Mikles Morales and his friends come back to bite them in the ass in the wonderful, if bloated, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
Out now from Sony Home Entertainment, the 2:20 film is merely part one of a more sprawling saga that is entirely built around Miles (Shameik Moore) making a decision in the previous film that has multiversal implications.
In fact, his repercussions have such omniversal impact that Spider-Man 2099 (Oscar Isaac) has formed the Spider-Society with its core members traversing the multiverse to repair the damage (with a wonderful throwaway line about Doctor Strange).
Miles is blissfully unaware of this until another of his actions appears in the form of a new foe, the Spot (Jason Schwartzman), who is seen mastering his powers with growing confidence until he makes a mistake and enters himself and, therefore, the multiverse.

The Sinister Six from Spider-Man lore were just shown off in a deleted scene that almost made it into Sony Pictures' latest movie, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
While the Sinister Six has always been on the table for Sony in its Spider-Man films, Spider-Verse 2 had a couple of potential moments for this scary septet on the table.
This animated sequel took a unique route by utilizing Jason Schwartzman's Dr. Jonathan Ohnn, better known as the Spot, as its main villain, although the story also teased a vast number of classic web-slinger antagonists from other universes.

“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” has notched another box office milestone, crossing $500 million globally.
So far, Sony’s animated comic book sequel has grossed $290.4 million in North America and $215.9 million internationally, which brings its worldwide tally to a mighty $506.3 million. It currently stands as the third-highest grossing domestic release of the year, behind Universal’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” ($572 million) and Disney’s “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” ($345 million). And it’s the fourth-biggest global release following “Mario” ($1.3 billion), “Guardians” ($822 million) and “Fast X” ($679 million).
“Across the Spider-Verse” opened on June 2, collecting a huge $120 million during its first weekend in theaters. Despite competition from “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts,” another comic book adventure “The Flash” and Pixar’s animated “Elemental,” the second “Spider-Verse” remained a huge draw at the movies and even managed to surpass the entire run of its 2018 predecessor, “Into the Spider-Verse” ($384 million), after just 12 days of release.

“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” has swung into theatres with aplomb, matching (if not beating) the excitement and love that the first movie, “Into the Spider-Verse,” garnered in 2018.
“Across the Spider-Verse” follows on from that first movie with Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) now a successful Spider-Man in his own universe. But another encounter with Hailee Steinfeld‘s Gwen Stacy/Spider-Woman leads to Miles being launched into the Spider-Verse wherein he encounters a society of Spider-People, led by Oscar Isaac‘s Miguel O’Hara, and a new foe — Spot (Jason Schwartzman). The film ends on an outrageous cliffhanger, teasing the conclusion of the series with next year’s “Beyond the Spider-Verse.”
For now, however, fans will have to be satisfied with this excellent addition to the Spider-Man canon, which currently stands at an impressive 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, with the site’s critical consensus reading: “Just as visually dazzling and action-packed as its predecessor,...

A major part of the fun of the multiverse-related stories is to see the limitless possibilities when it comes to characters—putting them into various settings, modes, timelines, and roles to explore through a plethora of iterations of the same basic traits. Not only does it provide the artistic freedom to work out various combinations and the chance to break free from a rigid mold, but it also keeps the said characters or archetypes relevant by prioritizing universality. Sony’s Into the Spider-Verse broke new ground while showing the multiverse in a unique way by bringing together seven different Spider-Characters, and the recently released sequel to it, Across the Spider-Verse, raised the stakes manifold by showcasing literally hundreds of new Arachnoid superheroes swinging on screen. All with their unique animation style, some returning ones retaining the past touch while some entirely new characters who don’t even have a comic-book origin yet,...

"Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" is filled to the brim with so much superhero action, characters, art styles, and dimension-hopping shenanigans that you might not have even noticed the lack of a signature comic book movie staple: the post-credits scene.
I myself honestly forgot to look out for one, but I think that was because the absolutely brutal cliffhanger left me reeling and I figured that "Aw, c'mon!" feeling was what the filmmakers wanted us to walk out of the theater with.
Turns out I was partially right. In an interview with IndieWire, producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller talked about their original plan for a post-credits scene, and one of the main reasons they nixed it was because it was "hard to beat where we left off." Their original idea for a post-credits scene required a bit of a set-up for the pay-off to work and that further complicated the idea.

Spoiler Alert: This story discusses major plot developments and surprises throughout “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” now playing in theaters.
For months, the directors of “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” had been working exhaustively on a critical sequence that launches the movie’s second act. For the first time in his life, the animated film’s hero — Miles Morales (Shameik Moore), a.k.a. the Spider-Man of Earth-1610 — enters a different dimension: Earth-50101, a.k.a. Mumbattan, a dazzling amalgamation of New York City and Mumbai. Within minutes, Miles and his Bff from 2018’s “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld), encounter that world’s Spider-Man, Pavitr Prabhakar (Karan Soni), an Indian teenager who received his powers not via spider bite, but through magic. The sequence launches them all through the vertiginously vertical metropolis, as they frantically try to stop the film’s villain, the Spot (Jason Schwartzman), from using Mumbattan...

[Editor’s note: The following interview contains spoilers for both “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” and its post-credits, well, kind of scenes.]
Wondering why there is no “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” post-credits scene? That’s because nothing they tried fit. “Hard to beat where we left off,” producer Phil Lord told IndieWire. However, there was a promising idea that was scrapped as a follow-up to a never completed scene in the film. It involved Spot (Jason Schwartzman), the bizarre-looking nemesis who’s all white with black spots that serve as inter-dimensional portals.
According to Lord and producing partner Chris Miller, the first scene had Spot hanging out at a Spidey villain bar but can’t get a drink because no one will notice him. “And then he finally steals the drink for himself and he pours it down and it all leaks out of his holes,” Lord said. “He’s the dorkiest villain. A great line that Chris wrote, though:...

Every world gets the Spider-Man it deserves. And here on Earth-1610, our webslinger is one Miles Morales: a half-Black, half-Puerto Rican teen who loves graffiti, Air Jordans, and quantum physics. Like most Spider-Folk, he was bit by a radioactive arachnid, developed the ability to crawl up walls and sense oncoming danger, ginned himself up some shooters and a suit, and learned that with great power came great responsibility. He also managed to save the many multiverses from collapsing in on each other, after a handful of other interdimensional Spideys — Spider-Gwen,...

The 2018 animated adventure comedy "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" was an audacious kick in the pants that brought Marvel's comics to life in astonishing new ways. It managed to not only be one of the earliest and best examples of the current boom in multiverse stories, but it also was just a darn good time at the movies. It was the cure for my superhero fatigue, and the latest trailer for the upcoming sequel, "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse," has me excited for more.
The new trailer shows some of the same moments and characters as previous trailers, but it also gives us a look at a few new characters and seems to confirm that someone in Miles Morales' life is going to face the same fate as Peter Parker's Uncle Ben. The second trailer of “Spider-man: Across the Spider-verse,” the sequel to the animated masterpiece “Spider-man: Into the Spider-verse” (2018), has been released online, and along with the first trailer of DC’s “Blue Beetle,” releasing yesterday, it’s safe to say comic-book media fans are having a hell of a time. Another similarity the protagonists of these two movies, Miles Morales and Jaime Reyes, respectively, share is that they proudly represent their Latino heritage. Returning to “Across the Spider-verse,” which has two different versions of the second trailer released with a different beginning, we will discuss both in this brief analysis, and the rest of the trailer follows a similar narrative.

Is the superhero movie bubble about to pop? The middling box office performances and tepid critical response of "Shazam! Fury of the Gods," "Black Adam," and even "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania" have come one right after another in recent months, sending off alarm bells among those of us who pay way too much attention to such things.
When set against the breakout success of a string of original blockbusters (albeit sequels) like "Avatar: The Way of Water," "Top Gun: Maverick," "John Wick: Chapter 4," and more, one can't help but wonder if audience tastes are shifting once again. Are superhero movies simply not delivering what moviegoers want anymore?
That's too broad of a question for now, admittedly, but here's hoping that a few upcoming comic book movies can help stave off the inevitable for just a little while longer. Chief among them has to be Sony's animated sequel "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,...

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was a visual marvel, but it sounds like the upcoming sequel will be pushing those visuals to the extreme. In fact, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse co-director Joaquim Dos Santos told Empire that the movie includes so many visually-distinct worlds that they’ve “essentially made five films in one.“
In addition to the universe of Miles Morales (Shameik Moore), Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will include Gwen’s (Hailee Steinfeld) Earth-65, Miguel O’Hara’s (Oscar Isaac) Nueva York, Spider-Punk’s (Daniel Kaluuya) New London, the India-inspired Mumbattan, and a fifth dimension which is being kept under wraps. “It goes hard,” said writer/producer Phil Lord. “The visuals will be jaw-dropping.” You can check out an image from the Mumbattan universe courtesy of Empire below.
“The first film was about bringing characters into Miles’ dimension,” explained writer/producer Christopher Miller. “This is about Miles heading off into others.

Back in 1980, Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back set the gold standard for blockbuster sequels – taking all that original Star Wars goodness and adding in some real darkness, a load of new worlds and characters, and a heap of pretty gnarly emotional stuff too. It was challenging, but a good kind of challenging – more like learning how to make rocks levitate than trying to survive a sarlacc pit. It’s a bold gambit to aim for that high-water mark with a middle-of-a-trilogy sequel, but Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse (developed back-to-back with upcoming threequel Beyond The Spider-Verse) is hoping to conjure some of that Empire Strikes Back magic.
“People who’ve seen Across… have told us that it feels like The Empire Strikes Back of the Spider-Verse franchise,” writer-producer Christopher Miller. “It shows you worlds you haven’t seen, and it’s an emotional story that ends in a...
