Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster tournament is back. While studios during Covid wildly embraced the theatrical day-and-date model when cinemas were closed, they soon realized there’s nothing more profitable than a theatrical release and the downstreams that come with it. If anything, theatrical is the advertisement for a movie’s longevity in subsequent home entertainment windows. Entering the conversation in 2023 were the streamers, such as Apple, who have also realized the necessity of theatrical to eventize their movies. The financial data pulled together here for Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster Tournament is culled by seasoned and trusted sources.

Five years after "The Nun" became the biggest movie in the history of The Conjuring Universe, Valak the demon nun is back for more. That's right! After being caught in development and, no thanks to the pandemic, delayed for a little while, "The Nun II" is finally upon us, with Bonnie Aarons returning as Valak and Taissa Farmiga suiting up once again as Sister Irene to fight the evil being in the lord's name. Let's get ready to rumble.
It's clear that Warner Bros. has no plans on ending this franchise any time soon, as "The Conjuring 4" and a TV series set in the universe are already in the works. So, does "The Nun II" contain any teases of what's to come? Does this sequel contain a post-credits scene of some kind? We're here to give you a spoiler-free answer to that question, as well as some context to help...

‘The Nun 2’ Filmmaker Michael Chaves On Breaking Into New Line’s House Of Horror – Crew Call Podcast
Within the course of a week some six years ago, aspiring genre filmmaker Michael Chaves’ life changed forever.
‘The Nun II’
Bloody Disgusting had posted his haunted house horror short The Maiden, which stylistically in its sneaky shots, steely hues and earth tones is oh-so-close to the gist of The Conjuring franchise. Off of that, Chaves, a Pasadena Art School & Design alum (which includes Michael Bay and Zack Snyder) gets a meeting and is signed by James Wan and David Sandberg’s CAA rep, Scott Henderson, a guru in the genre space. Chaves then winds up in front of New Line execs Walter Hamada and Dave Neustadter pitching himself for the directing gig of The Curse of La Llorona. Wan was wowed over by The Maiden, too.
Chaves’ oversee of The Curse of La Llorona goes so well, the movie turns a net profit near $46M off its $9M production...

As you may recall, Evil Dead Rise was originally going straight-to-Max, but the pivot to theatrical ended up being a profitable move for Warner Bros. At the worldwide box office, the well-received sequel scared up a whopping $146.3 million worldwide in theaters.

"Evil Dead Rise" made its big debut at SXSW this week, and was met with glowing, universal praise amongst critics, including our own Jacob Hall, who wrote that with "Rise," the "classic franchise roars back to bloody life." There's a lot to love about this latest installment, especially as it retains all the mean-spirited, nihilistic fun that the 2013 reboot brought while infusing the property with both a brand new city setting and a fresh set of new characters. It's been almost unanimously agreed by all who have seen it this week that this nasty, blood-soaked film from director Lee Cronin ("The Hole in the Ground") plays amazingly with a crowd and in a proper theatrical environment.
That's why we couldn't be more grateful that even though the film was first announced to be an HBO Max streaming exclusive, it was eventually reshuffled into the Warner Bros. theatrical release schedule. We...

There’s just no telling when Ash will run into a deadite. At a screening of the upcoming horror film Evil Dead Rise at the SXSW film festival, during a Q&a session with the cast and crew, an audience member became possessed, not by the Book of the Dead but by the Book of Anger, as he shouted out to the filmmakers on stage, “This movie f**king sucks!” Naturally, the audience felt how disrespectful this was and proceeded to boo the heckler as he made his way out.
According to Deadline, the heckler threw his popcorn in a fit of rage and stormed out after he had been approached by staff members following his little tantrum. The cast and crew laughed it off in disbelief, but the enraged audience member would flip them off before exiting and attempted to yell more obscenities as he was drowned out by the audience’s jeers.

Attending The Overlook Film Festival in New Orleans last year was one of my favorite horror experiences of the decade thus far, and Daily Dead is proud to return as one of the sponsors for this year's festival, taking place March 30th–April 2nd!
I couldn't wait to see what Overlook had in store for attendees this year, but I was not prepared for how spellbinding this year's lineup would be. From the world premiere screening of Renfield to the closing night showing of Evil Dead Rise, there are 26 features and 24 short films to look forward to, as well as the return of the Halloween costume party, the weekend-long immersive game, and Final Exam Trivia sponsored by Daily Dead!
On top of all that (and much more), in-person special guests will include Nicolas Cage, John Goodman, Joe Dante, Jim Jarmusch, and Chris McKay!
Below, we have the official press release with full details,...

Evil Dead Rise, the 2023 entry in the Evil Dead franchise, just released a bloody and terrifying two-minute trailer that’s everything you’d want or expect from an Evil Dead project. A chainsaw’s involved, of course, but that seems tame compared to what else the trailer teases is in store for horror fans.
Vikings‘ Alyssa Sutherland stars along with Lily Sullivan (I Met a Girl), Morgan Davies (Storm Boy), Gabrielle Echols (Reminiscence), and newcomer Nell Fisher.
Lee Cronin (The Hole in the Ground) wrote and directed the grisly horror film. Cronin’s behind-the-scenes team includes director of photography Dave Garbett, production designer Nick Bassett, editor Bryan Shaw, and costume designer Sarah Voon. Stephen McKeon wrote the score.

WaterTower Music has released the first music to be heard from the upcoming New Line Cinema action adventure “Black Adam,” starring Dwayne Johnson. The first-ever feature film to explore the story of the uncompromising DC antihero comes to the big screen under the direction of Jaume Collet-Serra (“Jungle Cruise”). Balfe’s vision for the music of Black Adam encompasses an exploration into the back stories that define the characters. The Hollywood Reporter said during the panel discussion:
Johnson tackled an age-old question: who would win in a fight, Black Adam or Superman? Earlier in the week, rumors circulated that Man of Steel actor Henry Cavill might show up or send a video message for the panel, but that didn’t come to fruition.
Said the actor of a matchup between the DC characters: “Pound for pound, they are pretty close. I guess it probably all depends on who is playing Superman.

New Line Cinema is moving forward with a “Mortal Kombat” sequel, with the 2021 film’s director Simon McQuoid set to return, sources tell TheWrap.
The previous film was a new adaptation of the popular video game franchise that offered a grittier, more violent take on the material than the 1990s films. As expected, New Line’s upcoming “Mortal Kombat” film has taken the video game’s trademark violent deaths (aka fatalities) to the next level. Watch the gratuitously gruesome red-band trailer below.
“Mortal Kombat” will be released simultaneously in theatres and on HBO Max on April 16.
“Mortal Kombat” is based on the popular video game franchise and is directed by Simon McQuoid. The film stars Lewis Tan, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Tadanobu Asano, Mehcad Brooks and Ludi Lin, with Chin Han, Joe Taslim and Hiroyuki Sanada. The film is about Earth’s greatest champions who are called upon to fight the enemies of the Outworld in a tournament for the fate of the planet. The original film adaptation of “Mortal Kombat” hit screens in 1995 and was followed with a sequel, “Mortal Kombat: Annihilation,” in 1997. The screenplay was written by Greg Russo and Dave Callaham, from a story by Oren Uziel and Greg Russo.
