Canaries is a British feature getting a Horror Channel FrightFest screening this weekend. We've been taking a look...
Think of big screen science fiction, and it’s likely to bring to mind glossy images of alien spacecrafts obliterating the White House, monsters running amuck in New York or Tokyo, or a post-apocalyptic Los Angelean wasteland. It’s perhaps unsurprising that these are the moments which linger in our collective consciousness; on screen at least, such cataclysmic events are usually clustered around the world’s big cities, with filmmakers giving little thought to how they might play out elsewhere.
There have been exceptions of course, such as classics like Village Of The Damned (1960) and The Stepford Wives (1975) and, in more recent years, UK filmmakers have also been looking to redress the balance. Marc Price set his 2008 zombie movie Colin on a suburban British estate, for example, while Stephen Fingleton...

The Bradford International Film Festival is typically an underground-friendly fest. This year appears to be no exception with two very special experimental film retrospectives, as well as a few modern underground-type flicks.
The 19th annual Biff will roll on April 11-21 at several locations around Bradford and Leeds in England, including the National Media Museum, Hebden Bridge Picture House, Hyde Park Picture House and other venues.
Biff is hosting a tribute to Stan Brakhage this year by screening the prolific filmmaker’s magnum opus, Dog Star Man, as well as a selection of his short films, from 1963′s legendary Mothlight to 1994′s Black Ice. There’s also going to be an epic-sized tribute/retrospective of experimental films from Austria, a country with a proud avant-garde filmmaking tradition that’s typically overlooked.

Stars: Dominic Brunt, Joanne Mitchell, Eileen O’Brien, Nicky Evans, Alex Baldacci | Written by Mark Illis, Joanne Mitchell | Directed by Dominic Brunt
With the film set for a DVD release on February 25th, here’s a Dan’s emotive review of Before Dawn from last August’s London Frightfest – Phil
There’s unlikely to be a review of Before Dawn written that doesn’t mention director and star Dominic Brunt’s Emmerdale connection. Brunt has starred as Paddy Kirk on the long running soap since 1997, and is one of the show’s most recognisable stars. What many people perhaps do not know, is that Dominic is a huge fan of the horror genre, even going so far as to host the Leeds horror festival on an annual basis. And now, Brunt has taken the next logical step and has directed and starred in Before Dawn.

Film maker Marc Price, director of the £45 zombie film Colin, has finished work on his second feature film Magpie – previously known as The Coffin – which was financed by Emmerdale actor Dominic Brunt (who himself made his film debut with a zombie film, the well-received Before Dawn), and tells thetragic story of a negligent young father who returns home for his 9-year-old, shark-obsessed son’s funeral. An unwelcome guest, he steals the coffin and finds himself on the road with the child’s mother and two friends.
Magpie was shot on location in London, Cornwall and Price’s native Swansea. Without a script, Price instead opted to workshop scenes with the actors based on a carefully designed structure. What follows is a journey with no destination, just a desperate desire not to return. Very different from Colin, Magpie is a dark relationship drama with significantly higher production value.

Two more films have been added to the Grimmfest 2012 lineup - one feature and one short - and we have all the details you need right here! Grimmfest runs 4th-7th October in the UK at Manchester's The Dancehouse theatre.
The feature film is Before Dawn, which was born from an argument between husband and wife Dominic Brunt and Joanne Mitchell. The film's original concept came from two opposing opinions of what makes a good zombie movie and what frequently makes a bad one. What's missing and what needed adding to. Before Dawn is the result.
Synopsis:
A weekend away. An idyllic cottage nestled within the rolling hills of the English Dales. What starts off as a gripping psychological drama between a struggling married couple suddenly descends into a shocking gruesome nightmare. As panic and confusion set in, Alex and Meg have to confront the fears within themselves and face...

Feature Films
Special Event: Nightbreed: The Cabal Cut
(UK/USA) – Dir. Clive Barker / Restoration Director. Russell Cherrington
The turbulent production of Clive Barker’s Nightbreed is the stuff of legend, and the film released in 1990 was a far cry from Barker’s original novella, with many significant scenes excised by the film’s producers. Presumed lost for over twenty years, the footage surfaced in the form of two separate workprints and has been integrated with scenes from the original theatrical version to create The Cabal Cut – a fully fleshed-out monster epic that captures Clive Barker’s original vision in vivid detail.

The sick and twisted minds behind the Melbourne Underground Film Festival have launched a brand new horror and sci-fi themed fest: Bloodfest Fantastique! Australia gets a lot more blood-soaked on June 10-18, nine nights of some of the most gruesome, terrifying and far-out films, past and present, from around the world.
While Muff has never been shy about screening genre films, Richard Wolstencroft — founder and director of both fests — is planning for his newest endeavor to simply be a celebration of his two favorite genres of filmmaking, without all the politicking hooha-ery that surrounds Muff.
So, there’s still a very underground-esque flavor to Bloodfest. The newer flicks in the festival have a scrappy, inventive, degenerate quality, from slice and dice em’s like Chris Sun’s Come and Get Me, Chad Ferrin’s Someone’s Knocking at the Door and Geoff Klein Bikini Girls on Ice; to monster flicks...

For our money in order to make a zombie movie good, the zombies themselves have to look bitchin'. All too often young indie filmmakers just apply powder and then stage blood onto folks and then claim them to be the living dead. That's akin to sticking plastic vampire teeth in your mouth and saying you're Dracula in terms of effectiveness.
One thing's for sure regarding the new indie zombie flick Before Dawn ... they really seem to be on the right track. Check out the first teaser stills below from Dominic Brunt's Before Dawn, which is being produced by Colin director Marc Price.
Brunt also stars along with Nicky Evans in this tale of a feuding couple on a make-or-break weekend, who find their chances of a romantic reconciliation spoiled when their cottage comes under attack by zombies.

Full disclosure: a screener of this film was provided by Julian Grant.
Director/writer: Julian Grant.
The Defiled right away grabs you as being an homage to an earlier time in films, the silent 1920s and before. Julian Grant's latest production is completely in black and white, while the feature is entirely without dialogue. However, the body language speaks volumes as an infected man does his best to ensure a future generation of man-eaters, by protecting his cannibal baby. The result is a slow paced dramatic feature in an apocalyptic world, which deserves greater attention from horror fans.
Director Grant shows his versatility in filmmaking, by acting as the film's principal photographer. The environments shot are mostly dilapidated to show a world in decline and chaos, while the lighting emphasizes zombie facial expressions and infrequent explosions. As well, there are long shots to show a roving militia and close interior shots,...

Colin's Marc Price moves on with The Coffin.
The staff at HugAZombie took a much-deserved break over the holidays, which is why we now present to you this week old story.
Welsh director Marc Price, who impressed at Cannes in 2009 with his debut feature Colin, which followed a man as he becomes a zombie and was made for $75 and a bag of crisps, is moving on to his next feature, titled The Coffin.
And what is The Coffin about? Well, it's about "an absent father who gatecrashes his young son's funeral, steals the coffin, and embarks on a momentous road trip with his ex-partner and two friends." Not exactly zombie fare, but still dealing with death.
Will Price strike gold twice? Remains to be seen, but we're wishing him and Colin actor Alastair Kirton nothing but good luck!

Marc Price, director of the low budget zombie film Colin , has begun principal photography on The Coffin . The Facebook page for Colin premiered a first look image which you can find below. Right now, the jury's out on whether this is a horror film or not. Thanks to Screen Daily, a synopsis has been revealed: The Coffin is the story of an absent father who gatecrashes his young son's funeral, steals the coffin, and embarks on a momentous road trip with his ex-partner and two friends. Sounds like a drama, unless this absent dad's dead kid rises from the grave. Alastair Kirton stars... Stay tuned for more.

Did you know that anyone can make a zombie movie? It’s true because last year, my cat made a zombie movie, and this month I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of a zombie film made by Osama Bin Laden. Yes, these days anyone who’s anyone comes up with the brilliant idea to make yet another low budget zombie film.
That is perhaps why whenever someone asks me to watch their independent horror film featuring zombies, I turn a little bit sour. Truth be told I kind of hate zombies. This is blasphemous according to approximately 95% of horror fans but I can’t help it if the recent fad has turned me cynical against a once exciting and entertaining sub-genre.
Through all the talk of the latest zombie films however, I remember hearing endless praise about Colin, a micro-budget zombie film that...

There are people who believe zombies should only walk. And there are people who believe they can run around like steroid-injecting track stars. Then, there’s Frank Darabont, executive producer of the new AMC zombie show The Walking Dead, who believes both aforementioned groups are full of hooey. “Well, it depends on the zombie’s mood,” says the Shawshank Redemption director. “If they’ve recently fed, they’re a little less interested, a little more shutdown. Other times, they’re riled to a predatory state and can get a little faster.” So, they’re mostly walking — but sometimes they jog...

British sales company Left Films (which handled Marc Price’s microbudget zombie movie Colin) sent along word that the over-the-top British horror/comedy Zombie Women Of Satan has been acquired for U.S. release. The film, which premiered last year at London’s Film4 Frightfest, was produced and directed by Warren Speed (who also scripted) and Steve O'Brien (who additionally served as cinematographer).

Director Marc Price has a confession to make. At the 2009 Cannes Film Festival, the Welsh filmmaker became a major news story when journalists found out that he made his debut movie, a London-set zombie film called Colin, for just 45 pounds sterling, or around $70. To many, that budget seemed impossibly small, and Price now admits the figure was indeed an inaccurate one. “I don’t even know if it cost as much as 14 pounds,” he laughs. “The things that we definitely spent money on for the sole purpose of making the film would be a pack of video tapes, which we...

This week sees a ton of genre movies coming out on DVD and Blu- Ray. The biggest being Predators, followed up by the remake of the cult classic Night of the Demons, a sequel to Mirrors, and Anniversary editions for Rocky Horror Picture Show and Psycho. Add to that a slew of indie and classic horror and there is a lot to choose from.
Predators
Directed by Nimród Antal
Robert Rodriguez presents Predators, a bold new chapter in the Predator universe. Adrien Brody stars as Royce, a mercenary who reluctantly leads a group of elite warriors mysteriously brought together on a jungle planet. But when these cold-blooded human “predators” find themselves in all-out war against a new breed of alien Predators, it’s the ultimate showdown between hunter and prey. Predators also star Laurence Fishburne, Topher Grace, Alice Braga, Walton Goggins, Danny Trejo, Mahershalalhashbaz Ali, Oleg Taktarov, and Louis Ozawa Changchien.

The number of home video releases on October 19th is not as abundant as in recent weeks, and fewer re-released titles means those that are available are much more special. In this batch one Adrien Brody flick competes with another, and at least two independent horror titles are making a splash. Two beloved classic films return in Blu-ray where one is supplemented by a documentary treatment of it.
Also, don't forget to strum & drum out with some tunes from Rob Zombie on Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. Finally, foreign horror gives us an over-the-top Japanese gorefest, a British zombie flick where the $70 budget was spent on tea and biscuits for the zombies, and Norwegian black metal.

For the fifth year in a row, October gets a little creepier and scarier when the Spooky Movie Film Festival rolls into the Washington, D.C. area on Oct. 21-25 for six terrifying nights of of feature films and shorts.
Every year, Spooky Movie redefines the very definition of “horror” by presenting an absolutely unique selection films from all over the world. This year the bloody offerings range from backwoods horror comedies to documentaries to Norwegian and British zombie flicks to Australian monster movies and more.
Most exciting, however, is the return of the father of the splatter movie himself: Herschell Gordon Lewis, who will be screening his latest gore extravaganza, the diabolical The Uh-Oh Show!. This is Lewis’ first gross-out flick in seven years and is an unholy combination of blood, social satire and fairy tales. Bad Lit’s seen it and thinks it’s a real hoot and a holler.

Indie zombie flick Colin has garnered much praise on the festival circuit, and for those of you still waiting patiently to glimpse director Mark Price's debut feature, you're in luck. The micro-budgeted horror film is lumbering onto DVD this October, courtesy of Walking Shadows.
From the Press Release
Breathing new life into the undead is the British horror phenomenon Colin, about the life of a zombie told through his own eyes, stalking onto DVD October 19.
The brainchild of British writer-director Marc Price (Midnight, the upcoming Thunderchild), Colin adds this original, unique perspective to a classic genre. Made for just $75, mostly spent on tea and cookies for his “zombies,” Price relied on friends and Facebook to cast his legion of undead extras.
In Colin, life bites (literally!) for Colin (Alastair Kirton, Midnight) when, after becoming a zombie snack, he dies and returns as one of the undead. Wandering aimlessly through the streets of London,...

It caused quite a stir when it premiered at Cannes back in 2008, and now first time director Marc Price’s no budget (it apparently cost £42 approx $75 to shoot) Zomb horror Colin is heading for a Us DVD release. Looking beyond the hype Colin isn’t without its faults, but that being said it definitely falls squarely into the realms of a flawed gem, with the benefit of being one of the few undead flicks out there, that tells its story from the Zombies point of view. Colin hits R1 DVD in October. Synopsis: Our “hero” Colin is bitten by a zombie; he dies and returns from the dead. We follow him as he wanders through suburbia during the throes of a cadaverous apocalypse. Through his encounters with objects, places and people, we learn who Colin was and more importantly, what he has now become. Including a broad daylight zombie versus human street battle,...

Colin, the little Welsh import.
Welsh filmmaker Marc Price reinvented low budget when he made the zombie movie Colin for a round 75 bucks. It's like the El Mariachi of zombie movies. The movie made a splash at Cannes in 2009. Colin has already been released in the UK and Japan, and is finally heading Stateside.
Indie distributor Walking Shadows is planning a limited release along with a premiere on VOD and DVD around Halloween of this year. Colin tells the story of a man who is bitten by a zombie and slowly turns into one. Finally, we get to see it from the zombie perspective!

Long-time readers of this blog will recall this much talked about, and cheaply made British zombie flick titled Colin.
The film made a lot of noise at the 2009 Cannes Film Market, thanks in large part to its non-existent budget of 45 pounds (or roughly $72)! That’s right, Marc Price, the director, made a feature-length zombie film for $72. How? Well, in short, he reportedly shot the film on an a 10-year old Panasonic mini-dv camcorder he owned, cast it using Facebook and Myspace (actors apparently worked for free), and edited on his home PC using a copy of Adobe Premiere he got from school.
Colin’s story is told entirely from a zombie’s perspective – an idea not often seen in films of the genre – and it worked for a lot of people it seems, as the film did go on to find a distributor after Cannes, was distributed theatrically in a limited release in the UK,...

Fans of Marc Price, who directed the micro-budget zombie flick Colin, have a new reason to smile today. Offering further proof to the old adage that you have to start somewhere, the director has gotten himself a much bigger budget for his war/horror hybrid Thunderchild.
Screen Daily reports today that Price's (pictured right) next feature will be shot in June. It's always nice to see a young filmmaker get his break. Colin managed to do a lot with a little so it's going to be really interesting to see what the director can cook up with some actual funding behind him.
Thunderchild centers upon a group of British airmen returning from a WWII bombing mission who have to cope with a new enemy when they encounter a flesh-eating creature onboard their plane. More as it comes.

If you were impressed (and actually believed the $70 budget) of Marc Price's UK zombie flick Colin, then maybe you should jump in and help invest in his next feature film, Thunderchild, a war/horror feature which will shoot in June and is being produced by Lefts Helen Grace. Look, it's always nice to see a good indie film, but the hype is ridiculous, especially when the claimed $70 budget is impossible (unless he robbed a Best Buy). Either way, I look forward to seeing what he does with some real money -- I'm gonna be watching him like a hawk. Here's a quick update as we just got our hands on the synopsis: "A group of British airmen returning from a WWII bombing mission have to cope with a new enemy when they encounter a flesh-eating creature on-board their plane."...

Marc Price, director of the low budget zombie film Colin , is locking down financing for his next film. Screen Daily reports Price is gearing up for Thunderchild , a "war/horror" feature. Shooting begins in June. Price's Colin was shot for a reported £45 (or $70) and is told from the perspective of a walking corpse. I wonder what approach he'll be applying to a horror sub-genre we've seen before in The Keep , The Bunker and Outpost , to name a few genre films set during a time of war.

After seeing the supernatural profit margins that are materialising from Paranormal Activity, it's no wonder studio bosses at Paramount want more of the same.
The film cost $15,000 (£9,200) to make and has so far brought in $107million (£66million). It's also been well-received by critics and a sequel is being considered.
Paramount now says it will spend $1million a year on developing other 'microbudget' movies.
Between 10 and 20 projects will be under way by the end of next year, reports Variety, with no individual budget topping $100,000 (£62,000).
Paranormal Activity isn't the first low-budget horror success. In 1999, The Blair Witch Project was made for $60,000 (£37,000) and earned $249million (£153million) worldwide.
David Lynch's 1977 cult classic Eraserhead was made for $20,000 (£12,000) while Robert Rodriguez's 1992 debut El Mariachi cost just $7,000 (£4,300).
Even El Mariachi, at less than half the budget of Paranormal Activity, isn't the cheapest film ever made.

Colin is a movie that keeps popping up in dicsussions with other movie fans. If you’ve not heard of it, it’s a British Zombie film that was made for a meagre £45. The difference between Colin and other Zombie movies is that this one is filmed from the point of view of the Zombie rather than the hero or heroin trying to avoid them!
Colin is written and directed by Marc Price and stars Alastair Kirton, Daisy Aitkens, Kate Alderman, Leanne Pammen, Tat Whalley and Kerry Owen.
I’ll do my best to bring you a review in the near future but in the meantime, Digital Spy have acquired the first five minutes of the movie which they have now placed in their website. Check it out here and let us know what you think in the comments below.

The Welsh zombie movie Colin took only less than a hundred dollars to make and was a sensation at Cannes Film Festival this year, enought to gain distribution in the UK. It opens tomorrow in theaters and next Tuesday it will arrive on DVD. Now, courtesy of Digital Spy, you can watch the first five minutes of writer/director Marc Price's movie about a man who is bitten by a zombie and becomes into a zombie in one of the most cartoon-inspired, zombie transformations ever.
We can't replay it here, so after watching the first five minutes here, watch some clips below:
