Projeto Paradiso has announced in Cannes that Daniel Bandeira has won the Pop Up Film Residency Paradiso. The program is created exclusively for Brazilian professionals.
Bandeira, currently developing “Red Express,” is also behind “Property”, which premiered at the Berlinale’s Panorama back in February. Born in Pernambuco, he has been a filmmaker since 2001, making his feature debut with “Peer Pressure.”
The three-week Pop Up Film Residency – carried out in partnership with Matthieu Darras of Tatino Films – will take place in the Faroe Islands in Denmark, with Jón Hammer of Kyk Pictures joining as local partner.
“In so many ways, this project will be a step up for me. In terms of production, but also creatively. It’s a complex story,” Bandeira told Variety.
“I really want to think about my potential audience this time. Who are they? It’s the kind of concern I didn’t have in the past,...

Santiago, Chile – In the run-up to the upcoming 76th Venice Int’l Film Festival, Paris-based Stray Dogs has closed international sales rights on Chilean drama “Blanco en Blanco,” which holds its world premiere in the festival’s Horizons sidebar.
Filmed last year in the frigid tundra of Chile’s Tierra de Fuego and Spain’s tropical Canary Islands, the anticipated second feature by helmer-scribe Theo Court (“Ocaso”) features Chile’s Alfredo Castro, who starred in 72nd Venice Golden Lion winner “Desde Alla” (“From Afar”) by Lorenzo Vigas. Castro leads an international cast that includes Germany’s Lars Rudolph and Spanish thesp, Lola Rubio.
Set in the early 20th century, the drama centers on a photographer, played by Castro, who heads to Tierra de Fuego where he has been commissioned by a wealthy landowner to cover his wedding.
The photographer discovers that the bride is a mere child and begins to obsessively photograph her in secret.

Brazilian “The Father’s Shadow” is one of those occasional arthouse quasi-horror films, like “The Spirit of the Beehive” or Aussie “Celia,” in which the supernatural elements seem a poetical extension of a child protagonist’s distress at the inexplicable realities of the adult world. Recipient of a special jury prize (as well as an acting nod to its young lead) at Fantasia, Gabriela Amaral’s sophomore feature could parlay critical acclaim into offshore distribution beyond the festival circuit. Not entirely satisfying, it’s nonetheless a curiously poignant fable of profound premature loss, both enhanced and somewhat muddled by its slippery occult elements.
Nine-year-old Dalva radiates a sullen suspicion that’s off-puttingly unusual for her age. But she has good reason for resentment: Her mother has recently died, and father Jorge (Julio Machado) is not coping well, to say the least. When not toiling at a toxic Sao Paolo building job he hates,...

The organisers of the Fractured Visions Film Festival have announced the line-up for their inaugural event. Says the organisers:
Over the past 10 months the festival has been privileged to witness some of the finest examples of modern horror from across the world. But after a tough selection process with dozens of stunning submissions, the official selection for the 2018 Fractured Visions Film Festival has been made.
Children Of The Fall (Israel) – UK Premiere
Rachel Strode, a young immigrant with a dark past, arrives in Israel during the Fall of 1973 to volunteer in a Kibbutz and to convert to Judaism. Soon, she realises that the local Kibbutz members don’t take kindly to foreigners, and the evening of Yom Kippur (the most important holiday in the Jewish faith), brings a brutal threat to her and her fellow volunteers. What began as a fun celebration of youth quickly turns into a menacing and bloody night of terror,...

It’s a classic plot: throw some morally questionable people into a dire situation and see who goes carnal first. When approached poorly, these stories can be among the ugliest and dullest in cinema. But when explored from angles of character and raw desire and desperation, there are wealths of dark truths to unleash. Recently shown at the Fantasia International Film Festival, Gabriela Amaral Almeida’s debut feature film, Friendly Beast (aka O Animal Cordial) fiercely proves the latter point.
The cruelties are petty at first, as they usually are. Coldly charming Inácio, owner of a high-end but unpopular restaurant, forces his cook Djair and spineless waitress Sara to stay late for two new customers. Anyone who has ever worked in food service will recognize their behavior—the proud tearing down of the wait staff, nitpicking at each other until any number of people are ready to snap. When two...

It's nearly closing time at a struggling restaurant. The waitress, Sara (Luciana Paes) and kitchen staff just want to go home, while the boss, Inácio (Murilo Benício) struggles with money troubles, a nagging wife, and a desire for power and control in his life. A difficult couple enters, wanting a full meal, and Inácio forces the staff to keep working. Enter a pair of robbers, and the situation gets worse; but not as bad when the boss is able to get the upper hand, and suddenly an already dangerous situation turns deadly as sides are taken and people turn to the most abhorrent behaviour in the blink of an eye. Thus begins Friendly Beast, the debut feature from Brazilian filmmaker Gabriela Amaral Almeida. It's a...

Ahead of its world premiere at Fantasia on July 25, we have the exclusive first-look poster for Brazilian thriller Friendly Beast (O Animal Cordial), as well as several exclusive stills, which you can feast your eyes on below. Here's how the film is described: "Written and directed by Gabriela Amaral Almeida, the tense survival tale is set over several late-night hours in a sparsely-peopled Brazilian restaurant. When an armed robbery interrupts an already-terse dynamic between boss and customer, a group of virtual strangers are tossed into a frantic fight for their lives." Judging by the look of things, that title is ironic. I'm hoping we'll hear more from attendees after the film debuts next Tuesday....
