In 1981, David Cronenberg directed the science fiction film "Scanners." It starred Stepehn Lack as a down-on-his-luck homeless man who possesses eerie mind-bullet powers. People with such powers are called Scanners. He is recruited into a secret government project and introduced to other Scanners, but also finds himself targeted by a rival group of rogue Scanners, of which Michael Ironside is a member. Early in "Scanners," Ironside's character uses his powers to explode the head of a journalist. It's perhaps the single best exploding head scene in cinema history. At the film's climax, Ironside and Lack will try to Scan one another to death. A few eyeballs will burst.
Ironside, now 72, is a Canadian actor and all-around kind fellow with hundreds of credits to his name. His deep voice and stern demeanor found him playing heavies and villains a lot, and chances are quite good that you, the reader, have seen...

The following contains major plot spoilers for I Am Not Okay with This. Read our spoiler-free review here.
Sydney Novak almost had the perfect high school moment. After a decidedly testing week, it all came this close to working out. Dancing together at the school dance, the girl she loved leaned in for a kiss. And then everything turned to shit.
In seconds, her girl’s ex had hijacked the stage to read aloud from Syd’s diary. In front of their classmates, he humiliated her, outed her and homophobically abused her. Seconds before Brad also outed her superpowers, Syd silenced him in the bloodiest way. Think Carrie meets Scanners. When Brad said that Homecoming was going to be “fucking mind-blowing”, he can’t...

While Darren Lynn Bousman finishes up Repo! The Gentic Opera and preps for an episode of Fear Itself for Lionsgate and NBC, Dimension Films will be finding a new writer to pen the remake of Scanners, which was originally written by David Goyer. Now that the remake of the classic Cronenberg film is being rewritten, the film has been pulled from its planned October 18 release and set to an unknown 2009 date. More news as it comes in. In the original low-budget movie, a couple of hundred telepathic and telekinetic humans, led by the particularly cunning and powerful Revok, plotted to take over the Earth, in some cases using their powers to literally blow people's minds.
