Thanks to Icon, we have Creation - the story of how Charles Darwin conceived his theory of the evolution of the species.
Creation stars Paul Bettany and Jennifer Connelly, directed by John Amiel from a script by John Collee. It is based on Randal Keynes’ book Annie’s Box, about the life of his great great grandfather, Charles Darwin.
In Creation, Darwin is struggling to align his evolutionary theories with his beloved wife’s Christian faith. Darwin is a vibrant father, and husband whose mental health gradually buckles under the weight of grief after the death of his daughter, Annie. This tragic event sharpens Darwin’s conviction that natural laws have nothing to do with divine intervention. To his contemporaries, this is an idea so dangerous it seems to threaten the existence of God.
To win, email miguel@focalattractions.com.au and tell us, what other scientist’s life should be made into a movie?...

John Amiel’s Creation is a curious beast indeed; a film about a great thinker struggling with dilemmas of faith and belief that ultimately strands itself by failing to properly observe its subject.
The life of Charles Darwin definitely has filmmaking potential, and personally I might have preferred to see a picture that followed his travels on the S.S. Beagle and time in the Galapagos.
Instead, Amiel and his screenwriter John Collee adapt a biography by Randall Keynes (Darwin’s great, great grandson) that focuses on his family life, his relationship with his daughter Anne and the circumstances surrounding the eventual publication of Origin of the Species, his seminal work that created a paradigm shift in modern thinking.

The last time Jennifer Connelly and Paul Bettany were in a movie together, it was 2001's A Beautiful Mind, a film in which their characters never met and Bettany's, well, wasn't quite what he seemed. But the two actors managed to meet and fall in love on that set, and now, nearly 10 years later, are acting opposite one another in Creation, a drama about the personal crisis that plagued Charles Darwin and his wife, Emma, as Darwin struggled to finish his manuscript for his groundbreaking book On the Origin of Species. Based on the book Annie's Box by Randal Keynes, Darwin's great-grandson, Creation shows the devastating effect that the death of their eldest daughter Annie had on the Darwins, bringing Emma even closer to her faith in religion and causing Charles to question his work on evolutionary theory, which had begun 21 years earlier. Told in a non-linear form and incorporating...

This week brings an interesting clash between wide and limited releases. For example, Paul Bettany stars in both a studio and an independent release. And the former involves a religious figure, the archangel Michael, and the Biblical Apocalypse, while the latter involves a scientist whose work has long been in conflict with religious teachings. Surely the two films would make for a great double feature.
Or, maybe you'd like to pair up another one of this week's wide releases with another one of its limited releases. A studio film starring Harrison Ford and Brendan Fraser attempting to save kids' lives through medicine with a low-budget film about saving kids' lives through friendship. A lowbrow studio film starring Dwayne Johnson as an imaginary creature with a highbrow foreign film about an imagined crime?
If only these three films were opening everywhere this weekend so everyone could enjoy such wacky match-ups.

The story behind the writing of Charles Darwin's "On the Origin of Species" might not sound like the most exciting basis for a movie, but in the hands of Jon Amiel, the director of such diverse movies as Entrapment and Sommersby , that story is told in a clever visual way in the new movie Creation , starring Paul Bettany as Darwin and Jennifer Connelly as his loving wife Emma. Loosely based on the novel "Annie's Box" by Darwin's great-great grandson Randall Keynes, Creation covers the many years Darwin spent researching and writing his most famous work while also dealing with the death of 10-year-old daughter Annie to a disease that seems to be afflicting him as well. At the same time, he finds himself in conflict with his religious wife who refuses to...

Based on a book written by Charles Darwin.s great-great grandson, Randal Keynes, .Creation. shows us the man not in his older years with a long, white beard (which makes him look more senior than his 73 years) but as a middle-aged man in his forties going through cycles of trauma, drama and occasionally some euphoria. Played winningly by the great British actor Paul Bettany, who teams up with his real-life partner Jennifer Connelly in the role of his wife, Emma, the film written by John Collee from a story by the scripter and the director takes us into the mind and heart of the author of one of the world.s one hundred greatest masterpieces, .On the Origin of Species,. which sold...

"Creation" is the controversial new film focusing on scientist Charles Darwin's relationship with his eldest daughter 'Annie', as the author struggled to document his radical theories in the book "On the Origin of Species", published in 1859.
Considered the foundation of evolutionary biology, the book introduces the theory that populations evolve over the course of generations through a process of 'natural selection' and that the diversity of life arose by common descent through a branching pattern of evolution. Darwin backed up his theories with evidence gathered on his 'Beagle' sea voyage expedition during the 1830's and subsequent findings from research, correspondence and experimentation.
Produced by Jeremy "Tideland" Thomas, "Creation" was directed by Jon "The Core" Amiel, starring husband and wife team, Paul Bettany and Jennifer Connelly as 'Charles' and 'Emma Darwin'.
Screenplay is by John Collee, adapting author Randal Keynes's Darwin biography "Annie's Box".
The film premiered in September at the Toronto International Film Festival.

While a biopic about Charles Darwin is probably not destined to be the most riveting thing ever committed to celluloid, it seems inevitable that it will spark at least a little bit of controversy. The man's research forms the basis of modern evolutionary theory, and is still contested by many religious groups (although not so much by scientists). That said, it's a bit strange how bland and unassuming the trailer for Creation actually is. Starring Paul Bettany as Darwin and Jennifer Connelly as Darwin's wife Emma, the movie supposedly explores the Darwin's struggle over his own theories and the fact that they conflict with his wife's religious views. It almost seems like the movie will try to explain how both points of view can co-exist (further supported by the accompanying logo for Mel Gibson's distribution company Icon Films). Not that that's necessarily a bad thing, but I think there...

The official trailer has now been released for Creation, starring Paul Bettany and Academy Award winner Jennifer Connelly — and it’s about time!
Based on the book Annie’s Box by Randal Keynes (Darwin’s Great Grandson), Creation is the story of Charles Darwin and the single most explosive idea in history. Darwin’s great, still controversial, book The Origin of Species which depicts nature as a battleground and an entirely natural phenomena — leading many to question the validy of such a document in such a God-fearing time.
Creation is directed by Jon Amiel and hits UK theatres on 25th September 2009. Take a look at the trailer below, let me know if you think it’s as good as I do:...

One of the trailers we missed last week was the British promotional trailer for Jon Amiel's Creation. Based on the book Annie's Box by Randal Keynes, the great-grandson of Charles Darwin, the film tells the story of a world-renowned scientist who conceives a book which will essentially prove the non-existence of God. Of course we're talking about Charles Darwin and "The Origin of Species." The film tells the story on a more personal scale, telling how the "global revolution played out in confines of a small English village; a passionate marriage torn apart by the most dangerous idea in history; and a theory saved from extinction by the logic of a child." Paul Bettany stars as Darwin, and Jennifer Connelly plays his wife Emma. Watch the trailer after the jump. Thanks to The Telegraph for premiering this trailer. It gives out the first look at Paul Bettany as Charles, Jennifer Connelly as his wife, Emma, and Toby Jones as Thomas Huxley among others.
Based on Randal Keynes' book "Annie's Box: Darwin, His Daughter, and Human Evolution", the movie follows Darwin as a young, vibrant father, husband and friend whose mental and physical health gradually buckles under the weight of guilt and grief for a lost child. Paul Bettany and Jennifer Connelly's Charles Darwin biopic Creation doesn't have a distributor yet, which means they're being unusually open with sharing images and early looks at the film. The official site for the movie is already sharing plenty of high-quality stills, which show Connelly and Bettany done up their period best. The movie is based on the book Annie's Box by Randal Keynes, which puts Darwin's work in the context of the early death of his daughter, Annie. Keynes is Darwin's great-great-grandson,which indicates there might be some family secrets that come to life in the film. Check out the high-res stills in the gallery below. Despite its lack of a distribution deal, Creation features big enough stars and a popular enough topic that it'll probably be seen sometime this year or the next.

Based on Randal Keynes's biography, the story evolves around the conflict between Darwin and his deeply religious wife (Jennifer Connelly), whose faith contradicts his work. The film is actually British, produced by Rpc, and is currently shooting in England. As previously reported, Christopher Young is also doing the music for Drag Me to Hell and When in Rome, and he has completed The Informers which will premiere at Sundance next year. His latest collaboration with Jon Amiel was the 2003 sci-fi romp The Core.

Latest: Rosamund Pike has denied real life couple Paul Bettany and Jennifer Connelly are to star in a new Charles Darwin biopic - insisting she is working on the film with Joseph Fiennes. Bettany and Connelly were recently rumoured to have signed on to play the legendary evolutionist and his wife, Emma, in Jon Amiel's forthcoming film Creation.
But now former Bond girl Pike has announced that she has already started work on the project with Fiennes.
And she claims her own fascination with Darwin's theories has helped her in the role.
She says, "I'm definitely a Darwinist, but playing his wife has been a real eye-opener. She was very religious and his discoveries placed a heavy strain on their marriage. We are exploring different angles to the story."
The movie is based on a book written by Darwin's great-great-grandson Randal Keynes, and will be released to coincide with the bicentenary of his birth in 2009.
