Credit: Disney/Justin Stephens The Conner family has been a big part of Sara Gilbert’s life. After all, between Roseanne and The Conners, she’s been playing the role of Darlene Conner since she was 13 years old — that’s nearly three-quarters of her life! But it’s not just Gilbert and her castmates who feel that closeness and affinity to their characters. We’ve spoken to Gilbert about the shows and the character many times over the years, and she said she’s always hearing from fans of the show who tell her that they’re Conners, too. When Roseanne premiered in 1988, the ABC series offered viewers a bold new take on the traditional family sitcom.
In the era of Full House, The Cosby Show, and Growing Pains, the Conners reminded Americans that not all households are filled with affluent parents imparting valuable life lessons to their grateful, obedient children.
The Simpsons often receives the lion's share of the credit for expanding our notion of what a sitcom family could look like.
But it's worth noting that Roseanne beat Homer and company to the punch when it came to mining comedic gold out of suburban dysfunction.
The show was a critical success right out of the gate, and over the course of its nine-season run, it developed into a reliable ratings juggernaut.
In its second season, Roseanne stunned skeptics by knocking The Cosby Show out of the top spot on the Nielsen charts.

When a beloved series like ‘The Conners’ waves farewell to a vital family member, it leaves fans with a heavy heart and a trail of questions. Sean Astin is making a return trip to The Conners, reprising his role as Tyler, Becky’s pilot beau, in the ABC comedy’s upcoming sixth season. As fans can see in a Season 6 teaser posted by TVLine, Astin’s FedEx pilot seems to getting serious with Becky Conner-Healy (Lecy Goranson), so much so that Dan Conner (John Goodman) refers to him as “New Boyfriend” as he deals Tyler into a poker game. “I’m gonna take all your money and your daughter,” Tyler says in the teaser. “Only half of that bothers me,” Dan quips, to Becky’s surprise. The Roseanne spinoff’s producers were eager to get Astin — an alum of The Goonies and the Lord of the Rings films — back on the Conners set, TVLine notes. “Whenever we bring in a new love interest, we’ve got to watch the chemistry, because we never know [if it will work],” executive producer...

TV’s IP fetish is no coincidence. Recognizable titles and stars can guarantee strong initial tune-in off of modest marketing. But long-term results are lackluster. Just look at the past decade’s worth of revivals. Different from reboots or remakes, risky ventures in their own right, a revival features original castmembers of long-departed series revisiting characters for whom there’s an assumed appetite. Viewers aren’t often as hungry as studio brass would like. The average life span of recent revivals is three seasons, while their originals averaged eight-year runs. So as Paramount+ kicks off October by nixing one revived comedy (iCarly, starring Miranda Cosgrove, above) and attempting to mount another (Frasier with Kelsey Grammer, which premiered Oct. 12), The Hollywood Reporter examines 10 case studies from this revivals wave and where they went right … or horribly wrong.

There is more strife within the Conner clan, as Roseanne Barr is going after her former TV daughter, Sara Gilbert, who played middle child Darlene on Roseanne. The former matriarch has come after Gilbert, saying she’s a backstabber who took advantage of her during the fallout from her racist tweets and cancellation of her show.
Speaking on the The Megyn Kelly Show, Roseanne blamed Sara Gilbert for where her reputation is now, saying her alleged traitorous ways have done a number, saying Gilbert told her, “‘I’ve got your back this time. I won’t let anyone at you. I won’t let anyone hurt you. I’m gonna protect you.’ All the crap she told me and then she tweeted, ‘It’s sad when one cast member…’ something about racist blah blah, and I was floored. I was just floored.”

Naveen Andrews is set to star in a comedy series at Freevee.
Amazon’s ad-supported streaming service has given a straight-to-series order to The Pradeeps of Pittsburgh, in which Andrews (The Dropout, The Cleaning Lady) plays the patriarch of an immigrant family from India who quickly becomes entangled with their new neighbors. Sindhu Vee (Starstruck), Megan Hilty (Smash) and Ethan Suplee (My Name Is Earl) also star.
Sony Pictures Television and Amazon Studios are producing the series, which comes from Black-ish alum Vijal Patel.
“This show is from a very personal place and explores the many facets of the immigrant struggle,” said Patel. “As my parents say, the pain got funnier over time — like wine.”
The Pradeeps of Pittsburgh will be told through sometimes conflicting flashbacks from an interrogation room and lay out the story of how the family quickly find themselves embroiled — romantically, personally and professionally — with a polar-opposite neighborhood family,...

Prime Video dropped the latest trailer for The Peripheral, the long-gestating sci-fi drama from Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan’s Kilter Films that’s based on the bestselling novel by William Gibson. The cast and producers made an appearance at New York Comic-Con today to hype the series that premieres Oct. 21.
“When I read the book Count Zero [by Gibson], it felt like a first hit of acid. I never experienced anything like the worlds that Gibson created,” Nolan told convention goers Saturday. “I’ve watched every filmmaker rip off all the ideas, myself included, from his works and no one actually had the guts to go and adapt from the source. For us, it felt like coming full circle.”
The Peripheral stars Chloë Grace Moretz (Kick-Ass) as Flynne Fisher, a woman trying to hold together the pieces of her broken family in a forgotten corner of tomorrow’s America. Flynne is smart,...
