J.K. Rowling has been at the epicenter of a social media storm this week following the Harry Potter author sharing a tirade of anti-trans tweets on Sunday, which many found to be deeply offensive. Today, Rowling returned to the topic, penning a lengthy 3,600 word essay on her website in which she defends her views and makes some personal admissions, including revealing that she’s been the victim of sexual assault in the past.
In the essay, Rowling outlines “five reasons for being worried about the new trans activism,” which leads into her discussion about being a survivor of sexual assault and domestic abuse.
Below is an extract from the essay:
“If you could come inside my head and understand what I feel when I read about a trans woman dying at the hands of a violent man, you’d find solidarity and kinship. I have a visceral sense of the...

“Black Panther” actor Florence Kasumba has confirmed that she filmed a scene in which her character, Ayo — head of security for King T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) — flirted with a female general (Danai Gurira). “If the makers would have wanted everyone to see the scene, it would have been in the movie,” Kasumba told Vulture, noting that additional scenes also did not make the final product, now in theaters. “What their reason is, I can’t tell you, because nobody told me about whether [that scene is] in or not.”
In April, Vanity Fair‘s Joanna Robinson wrote about viewing a rough cut of the Ryan Coogler-directed epic, which featured a moment where “we see Gurira’s Okoye and Kasumba’s Ayo swaying rhythmically back in formation with the rest of their team. Okoye eyes Ayo flirtatiously for a long time as the camera pans in on them. Eventually, she says, appreciatively and appraisingly,...

The first reactions to Star Wars: The Last Jedi are here and certainly echo Luke Skywalker’s standout line from The Last Jedi trailer.
The eighth installment of the Skywalker saga had its world premiere on Saturday night at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, where attendees were the very first audience to screen The Last Jedi. While reviews are embargoed until Tuesday, Dec. 12, reactions and early buzz began pouring out on social media immediately following the screening.
A Wrinkle in Time director Ava Duvernay called the movie “superb storytelling” and a “total joy-ride through the galaxy.”
Taran Killam (in a holiday sweater) sweetly thanked The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson, writing, “You took care of my childhood, and made my adulthood better.”
Logan director James Mangold congratulated Johnson on “dazzling writing and directing work” that allowed Johnson’s “own voice” to shine through.

“Darkness rises, and light to meet it.”
That eternal struggle between good and evil – between the dark side and the light – has been a cornerstone of Lucasfilm’s Star Wars franchise ever since Luke Skywalker walked out into Tatooine’s twin sunset. And when it comes to The Last Jedi, that feud will essentially boil down to two very powerful individuals who may have more in common than we’ve been led to believe: Rey and Kylo Ren.
Played by Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver, respectively, the Force-sensitive duo will be a big, big part of Rian Johnson’s sci-fi sequel, and we’ve even heard rumors that Luke Skywalker will be the one who pushes Rey toward Kylo Ren in the first place. Remember, Mark Hamill’s jaded Jedi has seen better days, so we can only assume that Rey and Luke’s relationship will get off to a...

“Justice League” reshoot director Joss Whedon is causing some confusion — and a whole lot of anger — among fans for appearing to agree with some pointed criticism of the very film he finished helming after Zack Snyder stepped down. Whedon set off a firestorm on Twitter for liking a tweet criticizing “Justice League” villain Steppenwolf (voiced by Ciarán Hinds in the tentpole film which lands in theaters this weekend). Whedon liked Vanity Fair’s Joanna Robinson Twitter message, which went: “#JusticeLeague‘s Steppenwolf is the worst comic book movie villain of all time and not even Malekith the Accursed comes close.

Joss Whedon’s relationship with Justice League has been much-discussed over the past few months, since we first learned that the Avengers director was helming the reshoots for DC’s team-up movie after Zack Snyder had to step down due to a family crisis. Recently, we were told that only about 15-20% of the finished product belongs to Whedon and so he hasn’t been given an official co-director’s credit, only a writing credit alongside Chris Terrio.
Even if he isn’t associated with Justice League enough to call it his own though, a surprising move of his on Twitter suggests that he has some personal problems with it. Though it’s been removed from his account already, DC fans noticed that Whedon had liked a Tweet from writer Joanna Robinson that criticized the film. Specifically, it lambasted Ciaran Hinds’ Steppenwolf as one of the worst comic book movie villains,...

[Editor’s note: Spoilers for “Game of Thrones” Season 7, through the finale, follow.]
The Season 7 finale of “Game of Thrones” brought with it one big death (Lord Baelish, we hardly knew ye), a big reveal (Jon Snow’s real name, in fact, is Aegon Targaryen), and a big scary ice dragon destroying the Wall protecting Westeros from the North.
It’s all leading up to the show’s final chapter, which we’ll see when it… eventually… premieres. Here’s what do we know right now about Season 8, based on reports and interviews with the cast and producers.
Pre-Production Has Already Begun in Northern Ireland
This is per the site The Watchers on the Wall, which also spotlighted some photos taken by a reader of construction happening right now.
Production Begins In October 2017
This is according to Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who told Collider that he’ll be back on the set then. If the filming lasts the same length of time as previous seasons,...

Much like the Red Woman looking into Arya’s future, much death seems likely in the season finale — but in what form might we expect it? There are plenty of theories out there as to what might transpire in “The Dragon and the Wolf.” The one guarantee: There will probably be a dragon and a wolf involved, at least on a metaphorical level. Beyond that, here are some additional thoughts.
The Snow Job
In order for a previous prediction for the “Game of Thrones” series finale to pan out, there needs to be some traction on the Dany/Tyrion romance. Pair that with my demand for meaningful blood to be spilt, and there’s only one thing that can happen Sunday night:
Jon Snow will die.
I know, I know. He’s died already, and, worse yet, it’s felt like he’s died 1,000 times. Even mentioning Jon Snow dying feels like a tired,...

With several tomes’ worth of backstory, enough screen time to fill up two and a half straight days of TV watching and a list of characters the size of Wun Wun (Rip, big fella), “Game of Thrones” might be the perfect TV show for the podcast era. Any of style of show works well in this universe: review show, obsessive deep dive, cultural criticism.
Some hosts can recite passages from “A Dance with Dragons” like scripture, while others are book agnostic. But the thing that ties them all together is this gargantuan television show that demands parsing out in other forums.
So we took a look at the shows in the top charts to see what makes each of them worth listening to. As the world gears up for Season 7, this is the perfect time to hop into a potential new TV podcast obsession.

Since this season of Game of Thrones has, in many storylines, moved past the events of George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire novels, an insane number of fan theories have popped up online and gained traction as some fans desperately grasp to figure out future plot points. One of these was a theory about how when Ramsay Bolton raped Sansa last season, he impregnated her and she's been carrying his child within her ever since.
Devotees of this theory have pointed to several things as "proof" that they're correct: lines in earlier episodes about how Sansa can still feel what Ramsay did to her, Sansa sewing herself a new dress, Sansa not eating the food at Castle Black, etc. And in last week's "Battle of The Bastards," Ramsay uttered a line that those fans latched onto as the latest example of a hint of proof: "You can’t kill me,...

The past is already written. The ink is dry. But even the future is finite for Game of Thrones. We’re solidly ahead of George R.R. Martin’s writing now; deep into parts of his next novel The Winds of Winter. In fact, Season 6 has felt like a sprint compared to the lumbering plot threads of years past. That sprint is building to a crescendo that will bring the Song of Ice and Fire to its conclusion. Perhaps sooner than we thought. Earlier this week, Joanna Robinson of Vanity Fair spoke with director Jack Bender about his time on Game of Thrones. Known for his expertise of executing the wibbly-wobbly-ness time travel, (he directed “The Constant” episode of Lost) Bender was brought in to direct Bran’s misadventures in greenseeing. Both “The Door” and “Blood of my Blood” were directed by Bender, and fantastic results speak for themselves. So obviously...

Answering Questions from the Game of Thrones Spoiler Mailbag.
In addition to my usual Game of Thrones explained columns on Monday, I may occasionally put together a spoiler Q&A later in the week. One of the benefits of covering the show so closely and co-hosting a podcast like A Storm of Spoilers is that readers send me questions throughout the week. By the time we get to Friday, there are all kinds of new theories, questions, speculation, and crackpotitude to talk about.
Let’s do that here. But first, if you’re into this brand of talk — that of speculative goodness — you should also check out this week’s episode of A Storm of Spoilers below.

For those who are not into speculation, production rumors, and potential spoilers, you may want to end your journey here. I’ll let this Gif of The Red Viper...

Is Jon Snow really dead? How much stalling will the show need to do to let George R.R. Martin catch up? How good can a blind assassin be? Can you unring a Shame Bell? What armies are even out there still fighting? What main character should be killed to get the shock mojo back? This week’s episode seeks to answer as many Game of Thrones questions as we possibly can, speculating and crossing our fingers with special guest hosts Joanna Robinson and Neil Miller (of the Storm of Spoilers podcast!). This is not a drill. The first teaser for Star Wars: Rogue One dropped Thursday on Good Morning America, and fans can barely handle the prospect of another epic installment in the franchise hitting theaters in just a few short months. The standalone prequel to 1977's Star Wars: Episode IV stars Felicity Jones as Jyn Erso, an orphan turned Rebellion fighter who is tasked with infiltrating the infamous Death Star. Star Wars diehards flooded Twitter with reactions to the gritty first look, and the general consensus seems to be "we're pretty damn excited": thoughts on #RogueOne teaser pic.

Inspired by Hail, Caesar!, Trumbo and Karina Longworth’s outstanding (and ongoing) You Must Remember This series on the Hollywood Blacklist, we want to bring the past into the present. What would happen if Congress decided to go after Hollywood in 2016 for being “anti-American”? Would they still attack Communism or widen their gaze? Would they even be able to wrangle the broad, diverse amount of movies being made? Would TV be on their main hit list? This week, special guest host Joanna Robinson joins me to dig into this thought experiment and (hopefully) come out on the other side with our souls in tact. Listen to find out who we’re calling before the new House Un-American Activities Committee. Quentin Tarantino can't help himself. In early December, after spending the second half of 2015 supplying the thinkpiece industry with one piping-hot take after another, the filmmaker confessed to The Guardian that sitting down for a bunch of long-form interview features may not have been such a great idea. "If I keep giving them fish," he said, "and they're giving me back chum in 450 different outlets, I don't know why I'm doing it." Then less than two weeks later, Tarantino appeared on The Howard Stern Show, where he accused Disney of...

Woody Harrelson's had a good run as Haymitch Abernathy in the "Hunger Games" saga, and it all comes to an end with "Mockingjay - Part 2." The Oscar-nominated actor appears to be pretty relaxed about the saga coming to a close. Here he is at Monday's Paris premiere of "Mockingjay - Part 2" looking as comfortable as I've ever seen a human being. Unless "Mockingjay - Part 2" is secretly themed around Target-brand sleepwear, you might call this a glaring sartorial choice. The internet has offered a couple of theories about Harrelson's appearance. Put a fork in Woody, he's done with being a franchise star. pic.twitter.com/WYkRLzCAz4 — Joanna Robinson (@jowrotethis) November 9, 2015 Woody Harrelson: Pajama pants and no shoes.
