Two-time Oscar nominee Bill Plympton has boarded the series “Guard Dog & Bill Plympton in Brazil,” directed by Brazilian animator Cesar Cabral.
Cabral’s stop-motion “Bob Spit: We Do Not Like People” won best feature at the Quirino Awards last May.
Currently in pre-production, “Guard Dog” follows the celebrated over-anxious or just neurotic yellow canine of te title alongside his creator Plympton. “The series’ general idea is to bring Guard Dog and his owner –in this case Plympton himself – to tour Brazilian cities and draw their tourist and artistic impressions of our country,” director Cabral told Variety.
The Coala Filmes and Cup Filmes co-production is backed by Federal incentive body Fundo Setorial do Audiovisual (Fsa).
To air on pay TV Canal Brasil, the three-minute, 18-episode series will mix 2D and stop-motion techniques and will complement a 52-minute documentary on Plympton traveling through Brazil in the company of Cabral and Cup Filmes producer,...

Cesar Cabral’s “Bob Spit: We Do Not Like People,” Roy Ambriz and Arturo Ambriz’s “Frankelda’s Book of Spooks,” and “Beast” topped the 5th Ibero-American Animation Quirino Awards, which took place May 14 at San Cristóbal de La Laguna, on the Canary Island of Tenerife.
It’s no coincidence that the three main prizes have gone to stop-motion works. The plaudits offer further proof of a growing mastery of this technique in Latin America, as well as then high level and extraordinary artistic diversity of animation titles coming to of Latin America, which is increasingly acknowledged on international markets.
Produced by Coala Filmes and Cup Films in Brazil, “Bob Spit: We Do Not Like People” was also nominated for the recent Platino Awards and took the 2021 Contrechamp Award at the Annecy Int’l Film Festival. Outsider Pictures handles worldwide distribution rights of the animated feauture.

Jose Zelada and Richard Claus’ “Ainbo: Spirit of the Amazon”, Cesar Cabral’s “Bob Spit: We Do Not Like People” (Brazil) and Hugo Covarrubias’ Oscar-nommed “Beast” (Chile) are some of the animated works in the running for the 5th Quirino Awards, the biggest prize event on Spain, Portugal and Latin America’s burgeoning animation scene.
In addition to a ceremony, the Quirino Awards includes an industry co-production and business forum for animation titles from the region.
The Quirino event will also host meetings including one of the Ibero-American Caaci state film-tv agencies, and another of Ibermedia, the region’s key international co-pro and distribution fund.
Brazilian feature “Bob Spit” and Chilean short “Beast” nabbed the highest number of nominations, each securing four. Mexican TV series “Frankelda’s Book of Spooks” and Peruvian movie “Ainbo” follow with three and two noms respectively.
“Beast” is the second Chilean short running for the Oscars.

What happens when a cutting-edge artist no longer considers himself cutting edge? That’s one question raised by “Bob Spit: We Do Not Like People,” but it’s far from the only one. In addition to being a stop-motion animated documentary about Brazilian cartoonist Angeli, it’s also a psychedelic road movie in which a roving pack of tiny, bloodthirsty Elton Johns set their sights on a punk-rock vigilante trying to reach his creator: Angeli himself. That’s nothing if not a unique premise, but writer-director Cesar Cabral’s animated whatsit proves more compelling as a concept than as an actual movie.
“Bob Spit” is most notable for its formal approach, which intermingles animated interviews of Angeli with a bizarre, at times surreal narrative featuring characters from his comic strips. The interview segments are intentionally barebones, background noise and all, creating an effect that feels both lived-in and a little off-putting.

Having a character one has created become more famous than oneself is every serious artist’s dream, but it can easily turn into a nightmare. Bob Spit – or Bob Cuspe, to give him his original name – is one of the most iconic comic book characters in Brazil, a green-skinned punk who became so popular in his heyday that he is considered to be a key factor in the rise of comics as an adult art form in Brazil. Yet whilst his success cemented the fortunes of his creator, Angeli, who had emerged as a political cartoonist during the military dictatorship in the Seventies, it also resulted in intense demands from fans who kept wanting more. Angeli wanted to move on to other things. This placed him and Bob at odds.
Mixing documentary, fragments of past narrative and fresh fantasy, Cesar Cabral’s film, which is Brazil’s hope for Best Animated Feature.

The Annency International Animation Film Festival announced Saturday evening the winners of its major awards.
Flee, Jonas Poher Rasmussen’s hand-drawn animation telling the true story of a man’s extraordinary journey as a child refugee from Afghanistan, won top honors by nabbing the Annency Cristal for a feature film. Deadline’s Todd McCarthy said Rasmussen “puts you through it in a way that illustrates, instructs, makes you look inward and ask whether you’d have what it takes, if you could tough it out and survive in a cold, hostile world.”
Riz Ahmed and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau will voice the lead roles in an English language version of the film, which will debut later this year, and the pair are also executive producers on the pic.

Annecy, France — In 2008, famed Brazilian cartoonist Angeli’s work made its first leap from the pages of “Angeli’s Comics” and “Chiclete com Banana” to the screen with the award-winning stop-motion short “The Rê Bordosa Dossier.” Now, a decade later, his characters have been serialized for broadcast on Brazil’s Canal Brasil in that same short-form, stop-motion style in the series “Angeli the Killer,” which features in the TV competition at this year’s Annecy Festival.
Each episode features interviews with Angeli himself, as well as a number of scripted “interviews” his now world-famous fictional characters. Stories of sex, drug use, punk life and even love are played out in the now three-dimensional adaptation of Angeli’s Brazil. Each episode also features a Psychedelic Moment, a 2D animated cut-away focusing on the same themes as the rest of the episode, and created by special guest animators.

Well, we’ve see the list of feature-length films that are in the 2011 lineup of the Sundance Film Festival. Just moments ago, the festival revealed the full list of short films that will accompany those features – 44 in total, from a record 3,453 submissions! Wow! Glad I’m not on that judging committee.
But of note in the below list are 2 filmmakers who are followers of this blog, both I’ve communicated with in the past – one actually was mentioned on Black Filmmakers To Watch thread, so we may as well add the other.
I’m referring to Moon Molson and Tahir Jetter.
Moon’s short film is titled Crazy Beats Strong Every Time. Some may recall that, in September, I posted an entry for Moon, to help raise money to complete the short film. He was trying to raise $8,000, and actually ended up raising $10,250! So, congrats to Moon! The synopsis for...
