It all started with music supervisor Tony Von Pervieux’s dream of working with pop music maestro Max Martin for an original Ted Lasso song — and ended with an emotional tearjerker that was so good Jason Sudeikis wrote a specific scene for the tune in the season three finale of the Apple TV+ comedy. Sudeikis even had a tiny role in changing one of the song’s lyrics (more on that later).
This is the story behind Ted Lasso‘s Emmy-nominated track “A Beautiful Game,” performed by Ed Sheeran and written by Sheeran, Martin and Foy Vance.

Ted Lasso may not return to TV screens soon, but the team behind Apple TV+‘s darling hit comedy is already hard at work putting Season 3 together. During the Producers Guild Awards (PGA), Deadline caught up with the show’s producers, Kip Kroeger and Liza Katzer, who offered some insight into what viewers can anticipate from the upcoming chapter. According to Kroeger, filming for the third season began “a week ago” in England. (Credit: Apple TV+) As viewers will recall, Season 2 concluded with a major betrayal as Nathan (Nick Mohammed) left AFC Richmond to helm Rupert’s (Anthony Head) new team, leaving his former colleagues and friends behind. While we wait for answers as to what’s next, Katzer said, “I think it’s just more of what everyone loves and what has worked and just going deeper into the characters.” When it comes to getting more of what fans love,...

“Ted Lasso” producers Liza Katzer, Kip Kroeger, and Declan Lowney spoke to Deadline on the red carpet at the Producers Guild Awards on Saturday, just a short time before they picked up the Danny Thomas Award for Outstanding Episodic Television—Comedy.
Kroeger confirmed that the team is back shooting in London, then the group teased a little bit about what people should expect from the new season. “I think it’s just more of what everyone loves and what has worked, and just going deeper into the characters,” Katzer said. “It’s deeper into the backstories,” Kroeger added, “we’re going to get a little more information about where they came from.”
Producer Declan Lowney then chimed in “there’s bound to be a bunch of surprises, things you didn’t see coming, some curveballs in there.” Are there curveballs in soccer? Well, I guess there are now.

“Nomadland” look home the top film prize at the 2021 Producers Guild Awards Wednesday, bringing it closer to a Best Picture win. The winner of the PGA Awards’ top prize has historically been a strong indicator of which film will will go on to win the Best Picture Oscar. Since 1989, the PGA winner has matched up with the top Oscar 21 out of 31 times. It happened in 2018 with “Green Book,” but not last year: “1917” won at the 2020 PGAs, but the Academy Award for Best Picture went to “Parasite.”
This year, 10 movies competed for the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures (see the full list of nominees and winners below). Seven 2021 PGA nominees for the top prize are also 2021 Oscar Best Picture nominees: “Judas and the Black Messiah,” “Mank,” “Minari,” “Nomadland,” “Promising Young Woman,” “Sound Of Metal,” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7.”
