Ok, so the actor Anthony Perkins is best known for his legendary role as Norman Bates in Hitchcock’s Psycho and its sequels… but that part is not the sum total of this superb actor’s career. That’s not to say he didn’t trade on his status as cinema’s seminal psycho, and starred in plenty of chiller thrillers, instantly lending them Batesian cachet… for example Edge of Sanity, a delirious conflation of Robert Louis Stephenson’s classic horror novella Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde and Jack the Ripper’s real-life reign of terror over Victorian London, where Perkins plays the unhinged lead role with aplomb. To celebrate the release of Edge of Sanity on Blu-ray from Arrow Video, here’s a round-up of some of Perkins’ finest non-Bates roles…

Peter Cushing! Christopher Lee! Each is at the top of his game, playing competing collectors of occult incunabula — the kind that comes with a satanic curse, when the purloined item in question is the Skull Of The infamous, despicable and sharp-toothed Marquis De Sade! Freddie Francis directs up a storm in this amicable Amicus chiller: the mysterious skull-duggery is beautifully shot and edited, giving the horror scenes real Bite.

Birthday shoutouts go to Rob Thomas (above), who is 41, Freddie Highmore is 21, and Florence Henderson is 79. Mike O'Malley is set to play the lead in the new NBC comedy Welcome To The Family. And here's a bit of trivia I didn't know - He's written two scripts for Shameless. In ratings news, Modern Family rebounded after last week's season low. Via Towleroad: Illinois Senate Passes Marriage Equality in 34-21 Vote Jake Lacy will play gay character Ronnie in the new CBS pilot The McCarthys. "the smart, funny, neurotic son who came out to his family two years ago. He’s finally decided to move out and begin a life away from his family, but they keep finding ways to involve him in their drama." I don't think I'm aware of much that Jake has done, but this came up when I Googled him, and that's enough for me.
