No two ways about it: April’s a great month for the Criterion Channel, which (among other things; more in a second) adds two recent favorites. We’re thrilled at the SVOD premiere of Hamaguchi’s entrancing Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy, our #3 of 2021, and Bruno Dumont’s lacerating France, featuring Léa Seydoux’s finest performance yet.
Ethan Hawke’s Adventures in Moviegoing runs the gamut from Eagle Pennell’s Last Night at the Alamo to 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, while a 14-film John Ford retro (mostly) skips westerns altogether. And no notes on the Delphine Seyrig retro—multiple by Akerman, Ulrike Ottinger, Duras, a smattering of Buñuel, and Seyrig’s own film Be Pretty and Shut Up! That of all things might be the crown jewl.

The 40 projects (see link here) presented at NewImages’ Xr Financing Market go before a panel of industry professionals, who offer their unvarnished advice, critiques and praise. To get a better sense of what moved the industry this year, Variety spoke with two participating decision makers.
Paul Bouchard, Diversion Cinema, head of Xr acquisitions and sales
What are you looking for in a project?
At Diversion, we’re always looking for our picks, projects that speak to our sensibilities. That could be either due to thematic reasons or formal ones; I think we’re all susceptible to projects that are formally audacious and artistically sound. We ask, what can be artistically daring while remaining possible to exhibit?
Of course, Diversion has a very technical side as well. We’re always looking for adventurous projects that we can realistically mount. We have to consider practical, distribution questions as well.
What past success can you point to?...

Oath’s Oscar-nominated immersive media studio Ryot has partnered with the funding platform Kaleidoscope and Facebook’s Oculus to produce DevLab 2018, a two-day incubator for augmented reality and virtual reality projects.
DevLab will take place Nov. 10 – 11 on the Ryot campus in Playa Vista, where a group of 10 Vr/Ar artists will get the chance to participate in hands-on workshops, live performances and roundtable discussions with advisors from different backgrounds, including game design, immersive theater, magic and storytelling.
“It really is meant to be two days of total immersion within each of these projects, looking at it from a multitude of angles,” said Jake Sally, director of immersive development at Ryot. “They should have notebooks full of notes, and hopefully level-up each of the projects in new ways.”
Participants will develop working versions of their projects, which they’ll later present to 250 industry leaders at a “First Look” event next year...
