Will A Discovery of Witches do more than just hit the familiar marks of supernatural fiction? Or will that be enough?
This A Discovery of Witches review contains spoilers.
A Discovery of Witches Episode 1
This review comes from Den of Geek UK.
There’s a certain book that I’ve been drawn back to over and over again since it was published in 2016. It’s called Meetings With Remarkable Manuscripts, by Christopher De Hamel, and it’s about some of the oldest and most beautiful books in the world. These are the kind of books that have a fascinating history, and De Hamel tells us a lot about the past by travelling to see, maybe even touch, them. But what I like most is that he also tells us what it’s like to be close to these books, now, after they have survived for so long.

The Jim Henson Company is moving forward with an animated adaptation of Eva Ibbotson‘s 1979 book Which Witch?, with Billy Crystal co-writing and set to play a role. But that’s not the bit you might be excited to read about. The bit that could get your attention is that, along with that film, The Jim […]

The Jim Henson Co. is about to resurrect some old fan-favorites for a new generation. The production house -- started by the late "Muppets" creator Jim Henson and now run by his two children -- is reportedly actively developing sequels to 1980s cult hits "Labyrinth" and "The Dark Crystal," along with a new take on "Fraggle Rock," and an Emmet Otter feature. They're also moving forward on the new animated property "Which Witch," with Billy Crystal signed on to write, produce and star. "Witch" is based on Eva Ibbotson’s 1979 book about a contest between wizard and witches, according to a Variety report. Both directed by Jim Henson (and featuring numerous creatures from his Workshop) creatures,1982's "Dark Crystal" was co-directed by "Muppets" vet Frank Oz, while 1986's "Labyrinth" starred David Bowie and a young Jennifer Connelly, and was exec produced by George Lucas. Meanwhile, Henson Co.’s live-action "Alexander and the Terrible,...

Though he's one of the most iconic comedy stars of all-time, Billy Crystal has laid pretty low key over the past decade. With the exception of voice work in Monsters University, the actor has only starred in a handful of films. We would say that he's picky, but those films have been the terrible comedies Parental Guidance and Small Apartments. But we're rather interested in a new project Crystal has lined up as Variety reports the When Harry Met Sally and City Slickers star will write, produce and star in Which Witch, a new animated film at The Jim Henson Company with Brian Henson in the director's chair. More below! The film is based on Eva Ibbotson’s 1979 book which follows a wizard who holds a contest among the seven witches of Todcaster to determine which one of them he will marry. Crystal says, "When Brian Henson called me about it,...

Buried in a recent report at Variety about Billy Crystal joining the Jim Henson Company's production of a movie called Which Witch? is an even more awesomely interesting piece of news.
At the end of the article they list several movies they are currently working on, and those include Fraggle Rock; a sequel to 1982’s The Dark Crystal; a movie based on the Emmet Otter character, and a sequel to 1986’s Labyrinth. This is the first time I've heard about a Labyrinth sequel. There were no other details revealed, but it's exciting to know that it's in the works.
As for the project that Crystal will be working on, it's based on a 1979 book by Eva Ibbotson, the story of which follows a wizard who holds a contest among the seven witches to determine which witch one he will marry. The actor said,

Director: Yann Samuell.
Writers: Eva Ibbotson (novel), and David Solomons (screenplay).
Cast: Kevin McKidd, Steven Mackintosh, Emma Fielding, Anthony Head, and Bill Ward.
DVD Release Date: October 4, 2011.
Humphrey was once an ordinary boy with an ordinary life. Well, that is, until he died—quite by accident, really. But don't tell his best friend, Barnabas, that. His death quite literally sets in motion The Great Ghost Rescue, a tongue-in-cheek horror comedy from the UK about dislocated spirits looking for a new home.
This movie made a quiet release on this side of the pond with very little fanfare as a Halloween season DVD release. Also, this film is by no means a faithful adaptation of Eva Ibbotson’s original novel of the same name, published 1975; that is a shame. This film is easy to share with young ones before going out for trick or treat.
While children may not get all of the jokes,...

We have a lot of time for writer/director Paul King here at Empire Towers, particularly following his superb debut film Bunny and the Bull. Now he’s back with a new project, which will adapt Eva Ibbotson’s adventure story Island of the Aunts.Chatroom’s Edna Walsh is hard at work cranking out the screenplay for this one, which follows three aunts who make it their mission to spirit unhappy and unloved children away from their neglectful parents and take them to a magical island where they’ll find happiness. It’s a fantastical kids’ book, so while there are always dangers to be found, it doesn’t exactly end as it might in real life, with the three women forced to go on some sort of register of child-snatchers.King, of course, is best known for his work with The Mighty Boosh, though more recently he’s...

Following his work with The Mighty Boosh and his intriguing dalliance with a big screen Paddington Bear movie it appears Paul King has found his next project.
Eva Ibbotson’s book Island of the Aunts is the material King is working on currently, the children’s book appears to have a nicely anarchic twist to it. The Nyt has this summary:
When the kindly old aunts decide that they need help caring for creatures who live on their hidden island, they know that adults can’t be trusted. What they need are a few special children who can keep a secret-a secret as big as a magical island. And what better way to get children who can keep really big secrets, than to kidnap them!
Deadline report that King is directing the BBC Films project from a script by Enda Walsh whose work with Steve McQueen on Hunger was well received,...

Exclusive: Paul King, whose first film Bunny and the Bull was picked up by IFC for the States, is directing this adaptation of Eva Ibbotson’s children’s book for BBC Films. A writer himself, King has adapted Paddington Bear for Harry Potter producer David Heyman and Warner Bros. Before that he directed the cult BBC comedy series The Mighty Boosh, which is also being turned into a movie. Enda Walsh (Chatroom) is writing the screenplay for Island of the Aunts, a Road Dahl-esque story about three aunts who go around kidnapping unhappy children and bringing them back to an island where they will be loved. This BBC Films project marks the second time Ibbotson, who died last October, is being adapted for the screen. Affinity International plans to begin selling The Great Ghost Rescue, taken from another Ibbotson book, in earnest once the film’s finished next month. Jason Isaacs...

You've got your scary ghosts and your friendly ghosts, but it's fairly rare in cinema that we see evicted ghosts. Egad!Kevin McKidd, Emma Fielding, Georgia Groome and Steven Mackintosh are also starring in what looks like a fun caper. C'mon, anytime there's a big Scotsman with a huge axe in a film,...

Please someone tell me why I can't stop singing the title to The Great Ghost Rescue to the tune of the failed northeastern children's television show "The Great Space Coaster"? It's been like an hour now, and it just will not go away! Somebody make it stop! Please!
