Network executives once came to the upfronts on a mission to get advertisers excited about a handful of new series coming in the fall. This year, TV’s big players took a T-shirt cannon approach.
Every one of the major presentations during the May 13-15 sprint in midtown Manhattan — NBCUniversal, Fox, Disney, Amazon, Warner Bros. Discovery and Netflix — emphasized the breadth of the company’s content offerings. Call it the everything-everywhere-all-at-once strategy for the streaming age.
As always, common themes emerged across the week. “Connections” was the buzziest of buzzwords used by executives pitching their hearts out from the stage. Without question, the song of Upfronts ’24, the one heard at most if not all events, was Beyoncé’s “Texas Hold ’Em.”
After sorting through the firehose of shows and spin, here are a few trends that stood out this year.
1) Star-Power Surge
Last year, the writers strike kept boldface names from appearing at the upfronts.

Shucked, the pun-filled, corn-fed comedy that surprised critics (favorably) and early on seemed destined to become a sleeper hit, will play its final performance at Broadway’s Nederlander Theatre on Sunday, January 14, 2024, producers have announced.
Shucked, which received nine Tony Award nominations last spring and eventually won one (for featured actor Alex Newell), began previews March 8 and opened April 4. When it closed on January 14, it will have played 28 preview performances and 327 regular performances.
Producers Mike Bosner and Jason Owen announced the closing. The musical will begin a North American tour in Fall 2024, with productions planned for London’s West End (at the Cameron Mackintosh Theater beginning winter 2025) and Sydney, Australia, (Spring 2026 with producing partner Suzanne Jones).
Producers reportedly have floated the idea of finding another Broadway venue after the show vacates the Nederlander, but finding a house in what looks to be a crowded Spring season will be tough. Still,...

In an ultimate show-must-go-on moment in country music history, Wynonna Judd was not about to let the legacy of the Judds slip quietly into the sunset, rather than go out as spectacularly as intended, after her mother, Naomi Judd, died by suicide in April 2022. And so the Judds farewell tour that had been scheduled for last fall did proceed, against all probabilities, with a bevy of top stars trading places as Naomi’s stand-in each night. The emotional end of that road was captured for not just one but two new specials premiering on different Paramount platforms — “Wynonna Judd: Between Hell and Hallelujah,” a feature-length documentary that debuted Wednesday on Paramount+, and “The Judds: Love Is Alive — The Final Concert,” a two-hour performance special bowing tonight on CMT at 8 p.m. Et/Pt.

Grammy, ACM, CMA, Ama and Emmy Award-winning group, Little Big Town’s latest music video for their song “Rich Man” is available everywhere now, after making its Facebook world premiere. Off their 10th studio album, Mr. Sun, “Rich Man” was written by Lbt’s Jimi Westbrook over the course of the last decade. The video features Charles Esten, who plays the central role of a father in the emotionally poignant video.
Produced and filmed by Running Bear Films in Nashville, Tn, the video is a nostalgic film which pays homage to good men, hardworking people, and loving families everywhere. It tells the story of a young boy and his relationship with his father (Esten) over the course of time. Interwoven with a performance by Little Big Town, the video ends with a beautifully fitting twist: Westbrook himself playing the older grown-up version of the little boy.

“Monarch,” the country music drama starring Susan Sarandon and Trace Adkins, has been canceled after one season on Fox, IndieWire has confirmed.
The show will not return for a second season and will end after Tuesday night’s season – now series – finale.
“Monarch” aimed to be a soapy character drama in the vein of “Nashville” about The Romans, billed as the first family of country music who have built a recording dynasty across generations. But when their dynasty’s reign is put in jeopardy, the family’s matriarch Nicolette Roman (Anna Friel) stops at nothing to restore their family’s legacy.
And though the season premiere was Fox’s most-watched scripted series debut in three years, seen by 3.8 million viewers with a 0.8 score in the key demo, its remaining 10 episodes struggled and averaged far below that initial high mark. The premiere got a big bump following an NFL double header...

Wynonna Judd shined in black during The Judds: Love Is Alive final concert Thursday night, which honored her late mother, Naomi Judd.
Wynonna — who has been wearing black at many of the public appearances she’s made since her mother’s death in April — dressed head-to-toe in the color, topping a pair of velvet bellbottoms with a blouse that featured fringe detailing. While on the carpet, she coupled the look with a glittery duster, rounding out her ensemble with a pair of lace gloves, wearing her trademark wavy red locks down and flowing.

Though vocal groups are a longstanding tradition in country music, the quartet Little Big Town have been compared to Fleetwood Mac just as often as they’ve been compared to the Oak Ridge Boys. That’s due in part to their mix of male and female voices, as well as the way they’ve largely favored folk-rock arrangements over honky-tonk and country shuffles.
