Showtime’s Amy Israel has lined up her next gig and it’s with a familiar face.
Israel has been hired as president of television for the Peter Chernin-led content studio North Road. She will report to North Road CEO David Nevins, her former boss when the duo both worked together at Showtime.
In her new role, Showtime’s former head of scripted programming will expand North Road’s TV slate and oversee all aspects of scripted TV development and production for the company’s global portfolio. At North Road, Israel joins Chernin Entertainment president Jenno Topping; Red Arrow Studios founder and North Road president Jan Frouman; Connor Schell, who heads Words + Pictures; Kinetic Content CEO Chris Coelen; and North Road CFO Darian Singer, as well as Nevins, who joined in July after his own long run at Showtime/Paramount.

Another important executive is leaving their post at Showtime.
Amy Israel is stepping down from her position as head of scripted programming for the Paramount Global-backed network. The news, which was announced internally Thursday via a memo from Chris McCarthy and Nina Diaz, follows the February departures of Gary Levine and Jana Winograde from their top roles at the premium cabler. (Levine remains an adviser.) Israel is leaving the role effective today, but will remain on in an advisory role through year’s end. It’s unclear if she will be replaced.
Israel has been with Showtime for more than a decade and helped develop some of its biggest hits, including Billions and Yellowjackets, as well as the upcoming The Curse and Fellow Travelers. Another Showtime scripted original series has been shown the door.
The Paramount Global-backed premium cable network has canceled I Love That For You, the comedy inspired by star and co-creator Vanessa Bayer’s experience with childhood leukemia. The comedy, which ran for one season and had been one of the few remaining scripted series from the cabler’s previous executive regime, is expected to be shopped by producers Annapurna.
I Love That For You launched in May 2022 to warm reviews and wrapped its run a month later. The series co-starring Molly Shannon in a Saturday Night Live reunion with Bayer had been awaiting word on its future for nearly a year.

Layoffs will be hitting 25% of employees across the Showtime, MTV Entertainment Studios and Paramount Media Networks groups in the U.S. Tuesday, following months of internal deliberations about integration amid Showtime’s rebranding into Paramount+ With Showtime.
Additionally, MTV News — which was significantly affected by layoffs more than five years ago — will be shutting down. Other units, most of which are operations, will be shuttered as well.
In a memo to staff, Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios and Paramount Media Networks president Chris McCarthy said that, despite Paramount’s “success in streaming, we continue to feel pressure from broader economic headwinds like many of our peers,” and that “senior leaders in coordination with Hr have been working together over the past few months to determine the optimal organization for the current and future needs of our business.”

The cuts keep coming.
Chris McCarthy’s swath of Paramount Global is laying off 25 percent of its domestic team today. The reduction comes on the heels of integrating Showtime into his cable and streaming purview, which will be consolidated into two functions going forward. There are “studios,” which now combine Showtime with MTV Entertainment Studios, and “networks,” which will merge nine separate teams into one portfolio group. The majority of the cuts are being felt by the latter group, with certain units, including MTV News, being shut down altogether. Paramount Global had 24,500 employees companywide as of the end of 2022.
“This combination has resulted in an incredible track record of hits,” noted McCarthy in a memo to staff, before rattling off successes like Yellowstone, The Challenge, Your Honor, George & Tammy and Yellowjackets. “However, despite this success in streaming, we continue to feel pressure from broader economic headwinds like many of our peers.

Paramount Global may put its online learning service for preschoolers, Noggin, on the block, The Wall Street Journal reported Friday.
A potential sale would be the latest in a series of changes at the media conglomerate as the company seeks to beef up its streaming strategy. The report comes on top of the exploration of a sale of a majority stake in BET Media Group, which includes cable channels BET and VH1.
When reached for comment, Paramount+ declined to confirm nor deny the Journal’s reporting Friday.
The Noggin platform, born out of a 1999 joint venture between Nickelodeon and “Sesame Street” parent Sesame Workshop, caters to kids ages 2–7. It initially included its own TV channel, but that was replaced by Nick Jr. in 2009 after INickelodeon bought out Sesame Workshop’s stake in 2002, the Journal said.

The Chris McCarthy era at Showtime has claimed another victim.
The premium cable network, which was added to the Paramount Global exec’s purview last year, has canceled late night talk show Ziwe after two seasons. Additionally, Showtime has made decisions on two of its three comedy pilots, handing out a series order to Mandy Patinkin family comedy Seasoned while passing on The Wood. What’s more, the original movie Heist 88 starring Courtney B. Vance, has moved from Paramount+ to Showtime.
The changes come as McCarthy has identified three different programming groups for his vision of Showtime, which is being rebranded as Paramount+ With Showtime in a bid to better align the streamer and linear network: franchises, diverse cultures and antiheroes.
As part of McCarthy’s Showtime review, the exec who also oversees linear networks Paramount, MTV, Comedy Central and more has integrated the cabler’s exec team with...

The big changes at Paramount+ continue with a serious shakeup in leadership as Tanya Giles, chief programming officer for streaming at Paramount Global, has left the company, TheWrap has confirmed.
Giles’ exit brings an end to nearly 30 years with Paramount — she joined the company in 1995 as a research assistant and rose steadily through the ranks. Prior to serving as chief programming officer of Paramount+, she served as general manager at MTV networks (starting in 2021), General Manager of Comedy Central (starting in 2017), among many other roles within the company.
Giles was named Cpo of Paramount+ in June, 2021 as part of a restructuring of content leadership. Since then Paramount+ has had several huge successes, most notably the “Yellowstone” spinoff “1923,” one of many Taylor Sheridan-produced hits for the streaming service. These hits have made Paramount+ competitive with longtime streaming giants like Netflix.
The reason for Giles’ exit has not been disclosed.

Tanya Giles is stepping down as chief programming officer for streaming at Paramount Global.
Giles was promoted in June 2021 to help oversee all streaming content programming efforts for the media conglomerate that has invested heavily in its Paramount+ streaming platform. News of Giles’ departure was first reported by Deadline.
The move comes as Paramount Global has been taking steps to further streamline its content, production and network operations under an increasingly smaller number of leaders. In late January, the company unveiled the plan to consolidate its stalwart pay TV cabler Showtime with the Paramount+ platform.
That shakeup led to the departures of Showtime’s top leaders, Gary Levine and Jana Winograde. David Nevins, another longtime content chief for Paramount and its predecessor, CBS Corp., left the company last fall. Giles was seen as having gained clout and turf amid the shakeups. Paramount Global ended 2022 with more than 77 million streaming subscribers, the company said; nearly 56 million of those came from Paramount+. That means the core streamer added 9.9 million subs in the final quarter of the year, a record.
Unfortunately, overall operating income plummeted 93 percent in the fourth quarter to just 182 million (down from 2.664 billion in Q4 2021). Wall Street forecast the company would report fourth-quarter earnings of 24 cents per share on 8.16 billion in revenue. Paramount posted adjusted earnings of 8 cents per share on 8.131 billion in revenue, missing both benchmarks. Without those adjustments, Paramount Global swung to a loss.

MTV Entertainment Studios and Showtime’s creative leadership teams are merging, with four more executives being laid off as the latter company’s upcoming consolidation with Paramount+ looms. Nina L. Diaz and Keith Cox will take on expanded roles as chief creative officer/president of content and president of scripted for Showtime/Mtves, respectively, reporting to Chris McCarthy.
News of the restructuring quickly follows McCarthy’s announcement earlier on Monday that Showtime co-presidents of entertainment Gary Levine and Jana Winograde’s roles would be eliminated; the former executive will take on a senior creative advisor role at the cable-streamer, while Winograde was let go as her position was consolidated. The shake-ups are a result of the larger ramifications of Showtime’s upcoming integration with Paramount+ later this year.

Showtime co-presidents Gary Levine and Jana Winograde are exiting their current posts amid a continuing shakeup at the pay TV channel, with Levine shifting to an advisory role and Winograde leaving Paramount Global entirely.
The move, announced by president and CEO of Showtime and Paramount Media Networks Chris McCarthy in a memo to staff Monday, comes following the Jan. 30 news that both Showtime’s linear and streaming platforms will be integrated into Paramount+ and rebranded as “Paramount+ With Showtime.”
“With the integration of Showtime across the company, many of the current functions that Jana oversees including business affairs, production, operations and casting are being centralized and therefore, Jana will be leaving,” McCarthy wrote of Winograde, a six-year vet of the network.

The future of Showtime’s co-presidents of entertainment, Gary Levine and Jana Winograde, has been determined.
Chris McCarthy, who added oversight of Showtime last year following the departure of David Nevins, sent a memo to staff Monday revealing that two-decade network veteran Levine will segue to a new role as senior creative adviser, while six-year network exec Winograde will be leaving the company at week’s end. Additional layoffs are involved in the executive shake-up.
It’s unclear if Levine has signed a new contract as part of the considerable change in his role. He will now report directly to McCarthy.
The changes come mere months after Nevins departed Paramount Global, with McCarthy adding oversight of Showtime to his purview that also includes Paramount Network, Comedy Central, MTV, VH1, Nickelodeon, CMT and other linear networks.

Showtime is shaking up its executive ranks, with Gary Levine taking on the role of senior creative advisor for the premium network and Jana Winograde departing, studio boss Chris McCarthy announced today. Both formerly co-presidents of entertainment at Showtime, the news comes amid the company’s eventual rebranding and integration with Paramount+ later this year.
As co-presidents, both Levine and Winograde were responsible for developing and supervising all aspects of Showtime Networks programming across all genres, including comedy, drama, unscripted, documentaries and films. The latter exec was also in charge of the company’s production, program operations, business affairs, casting, scheduling, research and home entertainment, operating as liaison to ViacomCBS Global Distribution. She worked closely on all programming related matters with the network’s marketing, creative, digital media, acquisitions and entertainment communications departments.

Three years ago, an adaptation of Lisa Taddeo’s novel Three Women ignited a bidding war before landing at Showtime with what sources say at the time was one of the biggest deals the premium cable network had ever made. Today, the drama starring Shailene Woodley that was eyed for a 2022 debut jumped to rival network Starz as Showtime — now part of Chris McCarthy’s sprawling purview at Paramount Global — pivots toward the Yellowstone franchise model that has driven viewers to Paramount+.

The global television industry’s breathless spending splurge is set to slow to a crawl over the next 12 months, as a top UK research group signalled the end of a decade-long content boom.
Ampere Analysis started 2023 with a prediction that worldwide spend on TV content, including sport, would increase just 2 to 243B over the coming year.
Ampere said this would be the slowest rate of growth in 10 years, as streamers and broadcasters rein in budgets. The 2 increase compares with growth of 6 to 238B last year. Spending stood at just 128B in 2013, according to Ampere.
Ampere said economic headwinds would put pressure on household finances and advertising spending, forcing the likes of Netflix and traditional broadcasters to rethink their rampant content investment.
Several senior U.S. execs used recent Content London keynotes to forecast spending cuts, with Showtime Entertainment President Jana Winograde saying “belt tightening is coming.”
Ampere also predicted a shift towards cheaper programming.

It’s The Economy, Stupid
Recession is coming and the global TV and film industries are far from immune. Inflation is rife in multiple international markets and consumers are feeling the pinch: in the UK, for example, almost one million households cancelled their streamer subscriptions between January and September. The cost-of-living crisis has been prominent in Deadline’s chats with producers, buyers and sales agents in recent months. Showtime Entertainment President Jana Winograde summarized the situation neatly at the recent Content London event when she said “belt tightening is coming.” Layoffs have hit the tech and entertainment sectors hard in the past quarter. Meanwhile, a recent survey from UK producer body Pact found that costs of production have already rocketed by 10 to 20. Dozens of producers used the same survey to lambast networks for failing to help with rising costs. As energy prices soar, the industry will have to seek workarounds...

Two of Universal Studio Group’s TV divisions have struck a development deal with South Shore, the Cooking with the Stars producer run by former Twofour bosses Melanie Leach and Andrew Mackenzie.
The deal was unveiled at Content London this afternoon and will see South Shore co-develop and co-produce a minimum of three unscripted projects of scale for the international market with Universal Television Alternative Studio (Utas) and Universal International Studios (Uis). The focus will be on social experiments, reality and competition formats.
South Shore will have access to Universal’s transatlantic resources including talent and IP as the pair seek a non-scripted pipeline.

Warner Bros. Television Studios is in the process of closing a major animation deal with Amazon for DC-branded content, according to Channing Dungey.
Dungey teased the news at Content London, stating that the studio is “exploring animated IP on different platforms,” including Wbd-owned HBO Max.

Dungey didn’t elaborate further on the deal as she talked through a role she has now been doing for two years.
She echoed the view of Showtime President Entertainment Jana Winograde yesterday by stating that shows will be made for less money in the coming years due to the global cost-of-living crisis.

“Belt tightening” is coming, according to Showtime Entertainment President Jana Winograde, who said studio bosses will need to find “creative ways” to deal with the global macroeconomic crisis.
According to Winograde, higher budget tentpoles will remain but “we will need to find creative ways” to fund lower budget shows that are “equally as compelling but may not have crashes, UFOs or big large-scale production sequences.”
“There will be belt tightening,” said Winograde, referring to the global cost-of-living crisis that will no doubt impact TV over the coming years. “Nobody wants to reduce the amount of content they are doing so hopefully people will find creative ways.”
Speaking at Content London, Winograde stressed the “glory of diversification” in the Paramount Global-owned outfit.

In a fickle TV business where the top network posts rank at the bottom for job security, we lost two of the longest-tenured executives in just a couple of days: the CW chairman and CEO Mark Pedowitz, who stepped down Monday, and David Nevins, Chairman and CEO, Paramount Premium Group and Chief Creative Officer, Paramount+ Scripted Series, whose exit was announced Thursday. Both were around the 12-year mark in their jobs.
The circumstances were different, though ownership changes and the never-ending evolution of the TV business were involved in both cases.
In addition to his reign atop of Showtime for the past dozen years, Nevins stepped in as Chief Creative Officer at CBS for two years after the ouster of Les Moonves. Then he added a string of responsibilities following the 2019 Viacom-CBS merger, including oversight of BET, Paramount TV Studios and Paramount+’s scripted programming. David Nevins has stepped down as Chairman and CEO, Paramount Premium Group and Chief Creative Officer, Paramount+ Scripted Series. He just made the announcement internally in a memo, a copy of which was obtained by Deadline (read it below). He will be departing at the end of the year.
Nevins’ decision comes three years after the completion of the Viacom-CBS merger. The longtime Showtime Chairman and CEO had been rising in the ranks since then, adding oversight of BET, Paramount+’s scripted originals and Paramount Television. A respected veteran TV executive, he was part of the senior Paramount leadership under CEO Bob Bakish. With multiple executives having a say over Paramount+ and calls often being made by a committee, there has been some frustration over the decision-making process at the company. There also had been chatter about a move to consolidate some of the operations under Bakish.

The series was also nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress for Melanie Lynskey and Outstanding Supporting Actress for Christina Ricci and earned additional noms for directing and casting. Lyle and Nickerson also received WGA and Hca nominations for their work on Yellowjackets, which averaged over 5 million weekly viewers across platforms in season one and was the second-most streamed series in Showtime history.
“Ashley and Bart are not only great writers, but they are also wildly original thinkers and creators,” said Gary Levine, president of entertainment for Showtime with Jana Winograde. “I’m not...

In addition to creating “Yellowjackets,” Lyle and Nickerson serve as executive producers and co-showrunners on the Showtime series, with Jonathan Lisco also serving as executive producer and co-showrunner.
“Ashley and Bart are not only great writers, but they are also wildly original thinkers and creators,” said Gary Levine, co-president of entertainment for Showtime. “I’m not sure I would want to go camping with them, but I sure as hell love working with them, and I’m thrilled they will be working at Showtime for years to come.”
“Yellowjackets” has been nominated for seven Emmy Awards for its inaugural season, including best drama series, best actress for Melanie Lynskey, and best supporting actress for Christina Ricci. Lyle and Nickerson are also nominated twice in the best writing for a drama series category.

Exclusive: The Affair star Ruth Wilson and Peaky Blinders and Good Luck to You, Leo Grande actor Daryl McCormack have been set to lead new blue-chip BBC and Showtime series The Woman in the Wall, inspired by Ireland’s controversial Magdalene Laundries.
In the 6×60’ gothic thriller, two-time BAFTA nominee Wilson will play Lorna Brady, who wakes one morning to find a corpse in her house. Brady has no idea who the dead woman is or if she herself might be responsible for the apparent murder, because she has long suffered from extreme bouts of sleepwalking. The episodes began during her teenage years when she was incarcerated in one of Ireland and the Catholic Church’s notorious Magdalene Laundries, where ‘fallen women’ were sent to atone for “sins” such as adultery and teenage pregnancy.

Yellowjackets was one of the buzziest and most successful series when it burst onto screens in 2021.
The series drew bumper ratings and rave reviews, meaning that it was only a matter of time before it snagged a renewal.
Thankfully, the renewal was made official in December 2021, but the series is yet to return to production, making a 2022 return impossible.
Co-creator Ashley Lyle opened up about the highly-anticipated return in an interview with The Wrap.
“We’re looking into the first quarter of 2023,” Lyle shared.
“We are on a very similar production track in terms of time as we were last season, although of course, we have to shoot an additional episode because we had already shot the pilot the last time.”
Production on Season 2 is expected to get underway later this month and it is set to wrap in February.
“We’ll be airing sometimes shortly after that,” according to Lyle.

The first in-person Television Critics Association press tour since January 2020 is set to take place in two weeks at the Langham Huntington hotel in Pasadena, California — but some major networks originally listed on the schedules shared with TCA members won’t be there.
Showtime, The CW, and Warner Bros. Discovery all dropped out of the TCA event, which typically takes place twice a year and spans several weeks. Showtime was set to present on July 29; now that date sits open, as does Warner Bros. Discovery’s date of August 9. National Geographic swooped in to replace The CW, which vacated July 31.
Dropouts are not unheard of, but vacating a TCA date usually means that the network swaps it for another one. So what gives? “Covid” would be the easy answer, but multiple sources tell IndieWire that while it remains a consideration it’s not the catalyst.

It’s Showtime once again for Homeland vet Mandy Patinkin, who’s returning to the premium cabler on a much lighter note.
Patinkin is set to star alongside wife Kathryn Grody in Seasoned, a potential half-hour comedy series inspired by the couple’s unorthodox real-life marriage of 43 years (which they have chronicled to much amusement on social media).
