When Jason Parham found out that “Insecure” executive producer Prentice Penny was on board to adapt his “Wired” article about Black Twitter, he had a pinch-me moment. “Is this a joke?” Parham recalled thinking, laughing at a table along with Penny ahead of the “Black Twitter: A People’s History” premiere at SXSW in March.
“Being a writer is very solitary process,” Parham said, comparing it to a television writers room or production team. He was nervous at first — he serves as executive producer on he series — but describes working with Penny as “pure collaboration from the very beginning.”
“We just vibed,” said showrunner Joie Jacoby.
“I just finished ‘Insecure’ and I really wanted a break from doing scripted television,” Penny said. “I didn’t want the next thing I did to be compared to that … I wanted a fresh creative challenge.”

Canadian actor-brothers Shamier Anderson (John Wick 4) and Stephan James (If Beale Street Could Talk) had their stars unveiled on Scarborough’s Walk of Fame. The men were raised in the marginalized Toronto community by a single mother who emigrated to Canada from Jamaica.
“It’s really humbling and flattering to receive something like this in my hometown, at a mall where I grew up, where I shopped, it’s pretty cool,” Anderson told The Hollywood Reporter.
The local Walk of Fame honor for the fast-rising Hollywood stars is more than an exercise in collective positive thinking for an inner-city neighborhood that earlier brought to the world celebrities like Mike Myers, Jim Carrey and The Weeknd.
The brothers are at work via their Bay Mills Studios production banner — named after the community housing project they grew up in Scarborough — on a landmark TV drama set in the inner-city community that is their home away from Hollywood.

Dana White was not always the CEO and president of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). He started running boxercise gyms in Boston with Golden Gloves champion Peter Welch. He moved to Las Vegas in the 1990s. In addition to running boxercise gyms, he also began training jiu-jitsu under the tutorship of John Lewis.
When White found out that the owner of the former parent company which owned UFC was interested in selling the company, he convinced Lorenzo Fertitta and his brother to invest in the company. In 2001, the former manager of mixed martial artists Tito Ortiz and Chuck Liddell became the president of UFC.
White started to build UFC from scratch and made it one of the highest-grossing businesses. Besides playing a major role in shaping the world of mixed martial arts, he is also known for his extravagant lifestyle.

Patti Davis, the daughter of Ronald Reagan, stated that her father would not want to have any association with today’s Republican Party.
“[Reagan] was much more moderate on a whole host of issues, while at the same time, much more hawkish on Russia than what you’re seeing from the modern day Republican party,” CNN’s Jim Acosta, the chief domestic correspondent for CNN, said to Davis during an interview.
“What would your father think about what he’s seeing right now,” he then asked her. “Do you have any insights on that?”
“Well I’d – I’d like to answer your question in sort of a bigger – from a bigger view than – than, you know, current – the current political scene,” Davis responded. “I’m not a political strategist, and quite frankly, I’m so tired of hearing about the current political scene.

Fall Through
By Nate Powell
Abrams ComicArts, 192 pages, $24.99
Artist Nate Powell gained international acclaim for his work on the March trilogy of graphic novels recounting the life and career of the much-missed John Lewis. However, he is more than just that; he’s an acclaimed writer/artist, as seen in the just-released Fall Through.
Powell is celebrating the punk aesthetic from the late 1970s and early 1980s, set somewhere between the Ramones and the arrival of the New Wave sound. It’s a narrow slice of music history since the beloved Ramones started in 1974, and New Wave may have first appeared with the Talking Heads in 1977, a year before part of this story is set. He traces the rise of Diamond Mine, a small quartet that struggles to get from gig to gig as they attempt to be Arkansas’ first punk band.
While that would have been interesting enough for a story,...

Exclusive: What does it take to become Civil Rights icon Martin Luther King Jr? David Oyelowo took on the challenge for Ava DuVernay’s underrated 2014 film Selma. It’s all there in Becoming King, a new documentary coming to Paramount+.
The 1965 march through the segregationist state of Alabama resulted in brutal beatings by local authorities and white vigilante groups as activist marchers crossed the Edmund Pettus Bridge en route to the state house in Montgomery. They didn’t get there, that day. Called Bloody Sunday, the nationally televised footage was shocking and shameful, and it left activist and future congressman John Lewis with a fractured skull. Six days later, President Lyndon Johnson had seen enough and gave a nationwide TV address pledging support for a National Voting Rights bill that became law after he introduced it in Congress. It was a milestone moment.

Scholastic, the children’s book publisher, will no longer separate titles that deal with race, gender, and sexuality at book fairs, according to The New York Times. The company, which runs more than 120,000 book fairs in elementary schools a year, had controversially started listing 64 such books in a catalog titled “Share Every Story, Celebrate Every Voice” earlier this month as a reaction to new state laws that restricted the types of books children could access. It would be up to participating schools to choose to include titles from the “Share...

When author Tanisia Moore was growing up in California in the 1990s, the Scholastic Book Fair was one of the most exciting times of the year. Moore tells Rolling Stone she has fond memories of bringing a catalog home to her mother and pointing out different books she wanted to read. But she also remembers the feeling of being surrounded by books that didn’t really speak to her experience as a Black girl. Now a mother of three and an author, one of Moore’s proudest moments was when...

This is Day 83 of the SAG-AFTRA strike.
The language was salty but the mood was upbeat at a union rally in Midtown Manhattan by striking actors and their supporters from the 150,000-member Transportation Workers Union.
With talks between the actors union and the production studios paused until Wednesday, the crowd at SAG-AFTRA’s solidarity picket with the Twu filled two lanes of the street outside NBCUniversal headquarters and made a sometimes Nsfw din that could be heard for blocks.
Oscar-winning actor F. Murray Abraham, one of the rally speakers, dropped an F-bomb in remarks calling for all working Americans to receive a livable wage and health care. “And since our corrupt Congress won’t give that to us, we got a f*ckin’ union,” he said to cheers.
But it was Twu chief John Samuelson who really let fly, railing at “p*ick bosses” in a pugilistic speech that...

Canadian script and story coordinators have reached a first-time agreement to be represented by IATSE and the Writers Guild of Canada.
The national agreement will see IATSE have jurisdiction over administrative work and the Wgc will represent creative work by aspiring screenwriters in mostly entry-level jobs where they do copy editing and script polishing, among other duties.
The first-time representation also comes amid the Writers Guild of America strike stateside where studios looking for minimum staffing for writer rooms, or so-called “mini rooms,” and the use of artificial intelligence tools have become key sticking points in stalled negotiations.
IATSE and the Wgc argue north of the border the trend toward smaller writing rooms or mini-rooms has resulted in script or story coordinators handling more tasks than in the past.
“Whether entry-level or otherwise, all work has value. And the people performing that work deserve to have a voice. The IATSE...

Bob Barker might be remembered as the man who saw many of us through the days we were home sick from school, but for Betty White, he was one giant pain for a period between 2009 and 2010. A feud between the pair erupted in 2009 when they had a massive disagreement about an elephant at the Los Angeles Zoo.
The two were fighting over the fate of Billy, an elephant who still lives at the L.A. Zoo to this day. In 2009, there was hope that Billy could be transported to a sanctuary — something that Barker supported. But White, a staunch ally of zoos, was opposed.
Things got so tense between the pair that Barker threatened to boycott the year’s Game Show Awards if White attended, despite the fact that he was slated to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award from the organization that year.

The world continues to mourn after hearing the news that Harry Belafonte died on April 25 at 96 years old. Although he might be most instantly recognizable for his roles in Hollywood and his musical hits, his legacy within the civil rights movement is deeply felt today. He fiercely advocated for political and humanitarian causes throughout his life, working alongside fellow activists and leaders like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
In 2005, Belafonte founded the Gathering for Justice, a nonprofit organization that provides an intergenerational forum for activists, community members, formerly incarcerated folks, and more to work towards ending child incarceration and eliminating the racial inequities in our justice system.
Carmen Perez-Jordan is president and CEO of the Gathering for Justice, and was a close mentee of Belafonte's for two decades. She's a pioneer within the social justice movement in her own right, cofounding Justice League NYC and organizing the 2017 Women's March as a cochair.

"It's just not sustainable, the system is going to collapse." Shine a Light Films has revealed an official trailer for a documentary film titled Americonned, formerly known as Poor: The Movie. From filmmaker Sean Claffey, the film is a clear look at how the War on Poverty become a War Against the Poor. In the United States, there has been an upward redistribution of over $50 trillion from the bottom 90% to the top 1% over the last 40 years. Politicians on both sides created a protection racket for the rich, and corporations are deliberately crushing unions. In this epic David vs. Goliath story, Chris Smalls and Derrick Palmer lead a movement to unionize Amazon workers for the first time, after the corporation fired Smalls for speaking up for workers' rights. They are inspiring legions of workers to, as the late, great Congressman John Lewis said, get into "good trouble." This looks like an inspiring,...

Old Crow Medicine Show’s Singer Wants to Talk Gun Reform With State Leaders After Nashville Shooting
Ketch Secor helped found the Episcopal School of Nashville, where his two young children are currently students. It’s a small, private Christian institution that has much in common with the Covenant School of Nashville, which was the site of a grisly mass shooting earlier this week that claimed the lives of three children and three adults.
Those similarities and the safety of his children were surely on the Old Crow Medicine Show leader’s mind when he hopped on Instagram and let loose with an intense, viscerally raw plea for change in this country.

Martin Luther King Jr. would be stunned by the rollback of voting rights in this country and efforts to suppress the teaching of the struggle for civil rights, according to his eldest son, Martin Luther King III.
“People ask me, what do you think your father is doing? He’s not just turning over — he’s spinning in his grave,” MLK III told Deadline in a conversation at the SXSW Conference and Festivals. He imagines his late father thinking, “’What the heck is going on? Me, my team, we opened doors that should never be closed.’ And yet we’re going, it feels backwards — at least temporarily. Which is interesting because he prophetically wrote in his last book, Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community?, obviously he wanted us to revert to community, but we are seeing chaos constantly. Every day something else comes out that’s more extreme than the last thing.

Kate loves wearing wedge heels. However, the late Queen Elizabeth II wasn’t fond of the shoe style. Royal women were reportedly prohibited from wearing wedge heels in front of the queen.
“The queen isn’t a fan of wedged shoes,” a source tells Vanity Fair. “She really doesn’t like them, and it’s well known among the women in the family.”
Surprisingly, Kate was seen wearing espadrilles during an event with the queen in 2019. They both attended the Royal Horticultural Society Chelsea Flower Show. It’s possible the queen relaxed her rules later.
Meghan Markle also likes wedge heels.

“Tonight’s recipient of the Social Justice Impact Award is a voice for those whose mere existence has been criminalized,” Tracee Ellis Ross said as she introduced the nationally recognized trial lawyer. “A voice for the collective advancement and protection of Black people. Cape Town, Feb 22 (Ians) Star all-rounder Nat Sciver-Brunt believes England’s dominating 114-run defeat of Pakistan was an opportunity to show everyone what they’re about as a team as her side twice made history in their final group game of the ongoing Icc Womens T20 World Cup 2023.
England’s mammoth win against Pakistan on Tuesday night was the biggest margin of victory in Icc Women’s T20 World Cups, while their total of 213 for five was the first time a women’s team had passed 200 in the tournament.
Sciver-Brunt played a crucial knock of 81 not out off 40 balls, anchoring a fifty partnership with Danni Wyatt before putting on 100 for the fifth wicket with Amy Jones.
With the ball, there were welcome wickets for Katherine Sciver-Brunt (2/14) and Charlie Dean (2/28), as Pakistan’s top order failed to fire.
“Previously in the tournament, I think we’ve been building up to a performance like this.

Christmas as we know it was invented in the spring of 2011, when a former fishing trawler crewman from British Columbia and a renowned heavy metal producer teamed up in a studio in Hollywood. Assisted only by a scrum of session players, a children’s choir and a 60-piece orchestra, they conjured mistletoe magic in the crisp LA air.
The ex-commercial fisherman was Michael Bublé, who, as a teenager, had spent six summers at sea alongside his father – a period that taught him the value of hard work and of keeping a clear head in challenging circumstances. The producer was Bob Rock, best known as midwife to Metallica’s Black album. The record they made together was, of course, Bublé’s Christmas.
Bublé didn’t quite invent the 21st-century Christmas, with its mix of super-charged sentimentality and planet-wreaking conspicuous consumption. The John Lewis marketing department, and its ruthlessly twee and weepy adverts,...

Back in February of 2020, right before the world shut down for a while, it was announced that John R. Leonetti, director of the horror films Annabelle, Wolves at the Door, Wish Upon, and The Silence, had signed on to direct the folklore-inspired horror movie Lullaby for Alcon Entertainment, with Game of Thrones‘ Oona Chaplin attached to star. Lullaby has since made its way through production and is now ready to be released. Deadline reports that Vertical Entertainment has acquired the North American distribution rights and will be giving Lullaby a theatrical and VOD release on December 16th.
Scripted by Alex Greenfield and Ben Powell, Lullaby centers on a new mother who discovers a lullaby in an ancient book and soon regards the song as a blessing. But her world transforms into a nightmare when the lullaby brings forth the ancient demon Lilith.

McKenna Grace has revealed that she underwent spinal surgery last month.
In a social media post that featured a video of her in the hospital post-surgery, the 16-year-old actor wrote: “Occasionally, life imitates art and the night my episode of Handmaid’s Tale where I was in a hospital bed came out, I was actually in a real hospital bed.”
Grace’s character found herself in a hospital bed in the episode titled “Together”, which aired on 12 October.
“Social media only reflects what we want people to know often we don’t see the ugly, hard, less-flattering sides of a person and their life,” she wrote in an Instagram post.
“For me, it’s been easier to hide my struggles and insecurities and maybe write about them in songs, but that didn’t fix them.”
Grace did not reveal the reason for the surgery.
In her post, the teenage actor thanked her surgeon,...
