Title: Jackboots on Whitehall Director: Edward & Rory McHenry Starring: Ewan McGregor, Rosamund Pike, Richard Griffiths, Alan Cumming, Tom Wilkinson, Richard O’Brien, Timothy Spall, Dominic West and Richard E. Grant Running time: 91 minutes, Unrated A British satirical take on what if the Nazi’s invaded England during World War II and the English have to band together with the help of Scottish highlanders, a Frenchman and an American pilot who thinks he’s battling Russia….and the actors are all puppets. Like most people, I loved Team America; however this was not even in the same league. It looked like a long…long episode of Robot Chicken, but with a bigger budget. All...

On July 26, New Video’s Flatiron Film Company will boldly release this World War II farce, Jackboots on Whitehall, for the first time in the U.S. across cable VOD, digital platforms and DVD.
The world’s future is in their tiny plastic hands.
World War II: What if Nazis seized London and all of England had to band together? When scarily campy Nazi leaders invade by drilling under the English Channel and up through the cobblestones on Whitehall, Churchill leaves his quiet retirement with a cat that looks like Hitler to issue a call to arms from his bunker under Downing Street. Chris, a young farm worker with large hands, rallies the village to fight the good fight — including an alcoholic Vicar, the oldest man in the town, several idiots, a random Frenchman and Bobby Fiske, a swearing American who believes he’s battling Russia.

Jackboots on Whitehall isn’t exactly news. Released in the United Kingdom on October, 2010, it was the first film of its kind to feature animatronic puppets and the voices of well-known British actors including Ewan McGregor, Rosamund Pike, Rosamund Pike, Richard E. Grant, Tom Wilkinson, Timothy Spall, Richard O’Brien and Richard Griffiths. The satirical film took place in an alternate history of the Second World War, in which Nazi Germany have seized London, causing the British to band together at Hadrian’s Wall to tey and thwart the German invasion. Produced by Karl Richards of U.K. production outfit, Entertainment Motion Pictures (E-Motion), the film boasts pioneering techniques in animation, fusing innovative puppeteering animatronics developed by Rory McHenry and visual effects by Mfx London. Executive Producers are Nigel Thomas and Charlotte Walls of Matador Pictures.

This year opened on a sad note indeed with the death of Pete Postlethwaite, star of The Usual Suspects, The Lost World and the underrated 90s British gem Brassed Off, whom Spielberg once called "the best actor in the world". A stalwart and often admirably brusque presence, Postlethwaite always brought something special to the screen, even when the films in which he appeared (such generic remakes as Dark Water, The Omen and Clash of the Titans) were unremarkable.
In the Boston-set thriller The Town (2010, Warner, 15), Postlethwaite plays a comparatively small role as sinister florist-cum-crime boss Fergie, whose malign influence seeps through the crime-breeding neighbourhood of Charlestown. Director Ben Affleck, who proved his mettle behind the camera with Gone Baby Gone, stars as disenchanted bank robber Doug MacRay, whose attempts to discover how much a witness (Rebecca Hall) knows...

This powerful frontline Afghanistan doc has been compared to a real-life Hurt Locker but here, war is all difficulty and very little glory. Closely observing a Us company in the hostile Korengal Valley, it's a mix of tense combat, bunker downtime and tricky "hearts and minds" local engagement efforts, interspersed with moving post-combat reflection. It all leaves you with a great deal of respect for the soldiers, and very little for the people who put them there.
Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps (12A)

Nice timing for the return of Gordon Gekko, but has the lizard changed his spots? He's now preaching that greed isn't good, and taking in young buck Labeouf for dubious reasons, in a flawed but fun sequel.

This labour of love animation about an alternative second world war outcome has a top-notch cast, but needed a better script, writes Peter Bradshaw
Amiably intentioned but desperately weak in terms of script, Jackboots on Whitehall is a Thunderbirds-style puppet spoof on the old-fashioned second world war action movie. It creates an alternative/fantasy scenario: the Germans succeed in invading Britain, and a gallant few, led by a grumpy Churchill, retreat to Scotland where they must make their last stand against the evil Hun. There is an impressive all-star vocal cast, including Ewan McGregor, Alan Cumming and Rosamund Pike, but the film has nothing like the wit of Nick Park or the razor-sharp comedy and satire of Team America: World Police. Writer-directors Edward and Rory McHenry have poured an enormous amount of effort into the animatronic creations and models, but long, long minutes go by without anything resembling a good joke or a funny idea,...

Effectively the bastard child of Team America and an Adam and Joe pastiche short, Jackboots on Whitehall has enough heart and humour to overcome its weak points.
The directorial debut of co-directors/writers and brothers Ed ad Rory McHenry, this animated comedy reimagines the second world war and throws in a heap of national stereotypes, in-jokes and swearing for good measure.
The Vertigo Films production follows the epic quest of a group of Kent villagers to survive the Nazi invasion of Britain – yes, you read that right – and keep Britain free.

So, I know not many people really liked the official trailer for Jackboots on Whitehall, the wacky puppet alternate-history WWII movie, but I think this poster is pretty damn cool and I wanted to feature it anyway (why the heck not?). Empire has debuted the official UK quad poster for the McHenry Brothers' Jackboots on Whitehall which features a cigar-chompin' Churchill (voiced by Timothy Spall) with a rifle. It has a kind of old school propaganda feeling (take that you Nazi scum!), mixed with funky puppets, and I really like the design. Although I'm still hesitant about the film itself, it's a very good poster, so check it out full-size below. Jackboots on Whitehall was both co-written and co-directed by British brothers and first-time filmmakers Edward McHenry and Rory McHenry. The film was produced in the UK by E-Motion Pictures and Media 8, but is an independent production so it...

Jackboots On Whitehall
Stars (the voices of): Ewan McGregor, Rosamund Pike, Richard E. Grant, Timothy Spall, Alan Cumming, Stephen Merchant, Sanjeev Bhaskar | Written and Directed by Edward & Rory McHenry
The simplest way to describe Jackboots on Whitehall is as a World War 2 Team America. Set in an alternate history where the English soldiers have not been rescued at Dunkirk and taking its cues from the comic book heroes of the era, Jackboots is an anarchic comedy that proves very hard to dislike.
After losing their land and air forces, England is invaded by the Nazis, led by the high camp trio of Goebbels, Himmler and Goering, when they tunnel under the channel and emerge in Trafalgar Square, with an aim to capture Winston Churchill and put him in a cage. Clearly realism, sensitivity and political correctness were far from the top of the priority list. It’s left to simple farm boy Christopher,...

Edward and Rory McHenry’s deliriously entertaining WW2 historical fiction, puppet animation begins with a desperate battle for Britain over the skies of Dover, as Spitfires and Messerschmitt blast bursts of machine gun fire and explode mid-flight. Soon the Nazi war machine reaches the shores of England and the good people of God’s own green and fertile land will have to mount a resistance to the menacing Hun, who have tunnelled under London for a blitzkrieg attack!

London -- Former Bond girl Britt Ekland, director Mike Hodges, New York's Museum of Modern Art's senior film curator Laurence Kardish and Iranian director Rafi Pitts have all been called to jury duty as the Edinburgh International Film Festival (Eiff) is due to kick off June 16.

If there’s one thing this world is sorely lacking, it’s war movies populated with puppets. Directors Edward and Rory McHenry attempt to rectify this glaring cinematic problem with “Jackboots on Whitehall”, a World War II fantasy flick which finds a group of ordinary freedom-fighting farmers battling an evil Nazi battalion that’s attempting to invade London by drilling under the English Channel. The entire action-packed adventure is packed to the rafters with state-of-the-art puppetry, and is voiced by the likes of Ewan McGregor, Tom Wilkinson, Alan Cumming, Richard E. Grant, and Timothy Spall. Those lucky sons of guns who are attending the Edinburgh International Film Festival this year should definitely consider show up for film’s debut, especially if the feature is as entertaining as the trailer embedded below. Super huge high-fives to Twitch for bringing the trailer to the masses.

Two highly-anticipated second feature films from U.S. underground filmmakers will be making their World Premieres all the way over at the 64th annual Edinburgh International Film Festival, which will run for twelve days on June 16-27. The films are Rona Mark’s The Crab and Zach Clark’s Vacation!.
The Crab, which screens on June 21, is the touching story of a verbally abusive man born with two enormous, mutant-like hands; while Vacation!, which screens on June 20, tracks four urban gals let loose in a sunny seaside resort down South.
Both Mark and Clark previously screened their debut features at Eiff. Mark’s Strange Girls screened there in 2008 and Clark’s Modern Love Is Automatic screened in 2009. Both films also ended up as runners-up in Bad Lit’s annual Movie of the Year award, again Strange Girls in 2008 and Modern Love in 2009. Sadly, these two masterpieces are still unavailable on...

Both films also ended up as runners-up in Bad Lit’s annual Movie of the Year award, again Strange Girls in 2008 and Modern Love in 2009. Sadly, these two masterpieces are still unavailable on...

A new trailer for Jackboots On Whitehall, featuring the voices of Ewan McGregor, Rosamund Pike, Timothy Spall and Dominic West has appeared online. The film, directed by brothers Edward and Rory McHenry, is naturally going to be greatly compared to Team America considering its miniaturised sets and its swings at politics. Set in World War II, Jackboots is a satirical version of the war that sees the Scottish defeat the Germans and save England from invasion - even "with their tiny plastic hands". Check out the...

What if Team America: World Police were British, took place during World War II, and was totally serious? Well...more serious. Ok, fine, what if Team America was British and set in WWII? You might have something like Jackboots on Whitehall, which tells the story of an alternate WWII in which Goering, Goebbels and Himmler plan to tunnel under the English Channel and into the heart of London in order to capture Britain while the country's army is elsewhere. A small group of villagers represent the last line of defense against the Nazis. Who says Inglorious Basterds has a lock on revisionist war history? The voice cast seems to be great: Ewan McGregor leads the pack, with Timothy Spall, Rosamund Pike, Tom Wilkinson, and Dominic West. Who plays Hitler? Alan Cumming! Of course. The trailer looks great; can't wait to see what writer / director / siblings Edward and Rory McHenry have...

Nazi puppets! Twitch has debuted the first trailer for the new puppets/claymation/stop-motion animation film Jackboots on Whitehall. The film presents a satirical alternative history of World War II where the Nazis seize London and England must band together to prevent a full on invasion. We featured some spiffy photos of the film earlier this year, but haven't heard or seen much about it since then. That said, this looks totally awesome, in a crazy absurd Team America kind of way. Remarkably, it features the voices of Ewan McGregor, Rosamund Pike, Tom Wilkinson, Alan Cumming (as Hitler!) and Timothy Spall. Check it out! Watch the first trailer for Edward & Rory McHenry's Jackboots on Whitehall: Jackboots on Whitehall was both co-written and co-directed by British brothers and first-time filmmakers Edward McHenry and Rory McHenry. The film was produced in the UK by E-Motion Pictures and Media 8, but is...

I would like to begin by stating clearly that when I refer to 'puppet Nazis' I do not refer to Nazi collaborators who simply bend to the will of their distant overlords. Those are Nazi puppets. No, I mean puppets - actual, literal puppets - who are Nazis. And in the case of the McHenry Brothers' Jackboots On Whitehall, those evil puppet Nazis have successfully invaded Britain and it is up to a small band of farmers to save the day.
With a voice cast that includes Ewan McGregor in the lead and the likes of Alan Cumming, Timothy Spall, Richard E Grant and Tom Wilkinson in the support parts and some truly stellar work on the technical end and all of that combined to a truly daft premise, this could easily be a cult hit in the making. The folks at the Edinburgh International Film Festival are certainly...

What's this? A new World War II film featuring the likes of Ewan McGregor, Alan Cumming, Timothy Spall, Richard E Grant and Tom Wilkinson? You would be forgiven if, on reading that cast list, you were bracing yourself for another piece of WWII Oscar bait or, perhaps, another trip down exploitation lane a la Inglourious Basterds. But, no, a trip farther down the cast list gives a hint that this may not be the case ... after all, what would Stephen Merchant and Richard O'Brien - you know his face from Dark City, but his most enduring work is as the writer of Rocky Horror - be doing in one of those films?
No, writing and directing duo Edward and Rory McHenry have a little something else planned. Something small but epic. Something animated. With toys. Welcome to Jackboots on Whitehall, a revisionist history of World War II in which Goering,...

What if the nazis won the second world war? Then we might get a vision like Philadelphia Experiment II (which I loved), but this takes it much further: they use action figures and models! Written and directed by brothers Edward and Rory McHenry and voiced by Ewan McGregor, Tom Wilkinson, Timothy Spall and Rosamund Pike, Jackboots on Whitehall follows a group of heroic villagers as they fight against the Nazi invasion of England and rescue Churchill.
Kent, 1940. Our heroes, a group of villagers from a quiet part of the English South Coast, seem blissfully unaware of the impending doom that sits across the Channel. But Chris, a young farm worker, dreams of the chance to join the army and fight in exciting new lands rather than be stuck in the slow paced village life he has grown up in. His chance comes when the three top Nazis, the enormous Goering,...

Imagine a world where Germany defeated England in World War II. Once you've stopped screaming, imagine your country's saviours in the form of a band of Scottish villagers coming down to London to stomp on the Führer's face and kick him and the rest of the Bosch back over the Channel. Well, that's the story of Jackboots on Whitehall, a new animated film that's started shooting today.Voiced by the likes of Ewan MacGregor, Richard Griffiths, Richard E. Grant, Timothy Spall and Rosamund Pike, this has been described as "the British version of Team America" directed by newcomers Edward and Rory McHenry, and it's shooting in the capital.A project that's been on ice for a few years now, this stop-motion-cum-puppeteering-animatronics-fest is set for release sometime in 2010. Let's hope it looks as barmily interesting as it sounds.
