Earth, Wind & Fire was alternately singing about the 12th of never and the 21st night of September, but it was all about the 19th evening of June as the veteran group proved an obvious audience favorite during “Juneteenth: A Global Celebration for Freedom,” a multi-artist, multi-genre show at the Hollywood Bowl broadcast live on CNN Sunday to commemorate the national holiday.
Held to celebrate the anniversary of Black emancipation in the U.S., the concert spanned almost as wide an array of musical and performance styles as could be packed into a single prime-time slot, from soul to classical to country to jazz. That breadth established, the lineup had a special emphasis on artists that ruled the R&b world of the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s, leading an emcee to joke to the sold-out audience about a time “before all those knee replacements out there.”

Juneteenth, the longtime observance commemorating the end of slavery in the U.S. after a June 19, 1865 proclamation in Galveston, Texas, has been a nationally recognized federal holiday since 2021. This June 19, an all-star cast of Black artists across generations — including a symphony orchestra made up entirely of Black musicians and conducted by composer Derrick Hodge — came to the Hollywood Bowl in California to celebrate the day. Here are the best photos from backstage, in the crowd, and onstage at a joyful evening of culture and history in Hollywood.

Besides having its full lineup revealed, the Juneteenth celebration at the Hollywood Bowl is due to get an audience much bigger than can fit into a Los Angeles ravine. “Juneteenth: A Global Celebration of Freedom” will be broadcast live on all CNN platforms June 19, with artists including Earth, Wind & Fire, the Roots, Robert Glasper, Mickey Guyton, Anthony Hamilton, Billy Porter and Jhené Aiko.
Virtually every major genre of music will be represented in the lineup, including R&b, classical, hip-hop, country, pop, gospel and jazz. Killer Mike, Lucky Daye, Mary Mary, Michelle Williams and the Debbie Allen Dance Academy further round out a program that will also feature the first time an all-Black orchestra has performed on the Hollywood Bowl stage in its 101 years.

It’s been nearly nine years since the Robert Glasper Experiment released Black Radio II, the second, Grammy-winning installment of his mélange of contemporary jazz, beat-heavy hip-hop, and neo-soul melodies. Since then, Glasper disbanded the Experiment, embarked on soundtrack work such as the 2020 film The Photograph and the Bel-Air TV series with Terrace Martin, and engaged himself in damaging social media controversies. There has been a resurgence in popular support for jazz, too, and that’s partly thanks to Glasper (he contributed to Kendrick Lamar’s 2015 masterwork To Pimp a...

One, the new first album from Ray Angry, isn’t like most debuts. That’s probably because the pianist isn’t exactly an up-and-comer: He’s got a huge list of playing, writing and producing credits dating back to the Nineties, including work with everyone from Mick Jagger to Joss Stone, Christina Aguilera, the Roots, Miguel and DJ Khaled. That might explain why One sounds more like the statement of an assured veteran.
Angry grew up steeped in gospel and classical, and his résumé ranges all over the musical map.

Robert Glasper Experiment, "Black Radio" (Blue Note)
In between the grooves on "Black Radio," the new album from the Robert Glasper Experiment, the band allows time for a little gripe session.
"When people think of jazz musicians, they pigeonhole us, like, just `jazz musician,'" says bassist Derrick Hodge over a freestyle melodious mix.
"I don't think people know what's good and what's not good anymore," says multi-instrumentalist Casey Benjamin, while bandleader and acclaimed jazz musician Glasper chimes in: "Anything popular, even if it's wack, is like what sets the pace of music nowadays. ... Ninety-eight percent of the stuff you hear on the radio is wack."
If that's the case, then "Black Radio" is a very smart – and entertaining – response to what is ailing the music world. The title reflects an idyllic dream state: Few black radio stations would even play Glasper or the varied music he represents, even if...
