So, it’s been twenty years since the release of Jared Hess’ breakout debut comedy- Napoleon Dynamite. Last week, we did some great anniversary interviews, and this week we’re taking a deeper dive into the meaning behind this cult classic. On paper, this is a movie about a dorky high-school kid in a rural Idaho town who helps his best friend run for class president while looking for love and dealing with his creepy uncle. But, if I believed that was all this movie was, I’d be talking about something else- but here we are.
Now, this is a movie that most everybody has either seen or at the very least is familiar with. And, while I agree that not every movie has to be some deep and robust metaphor for life and the human condition, I do think that there is an interesting angle for Napoleon Dynamite...

Japanese indie pop band Chai have announced their breakup after more than 10 years. In a social media statement, the quarter wrote that they will “eternalize Neo Kawaii” (part ways as a band), following a farewell tour of Japan.
“To continue our journey of self-love, as Chai have always said, and to continue to fulfill our own personal visions, we have decided to go our separate ways,” Chai wrote. “We are so sorry to surprise you with this news. Chai would never have been able to travel the world without all of your support, and we cannot thank you enough for the love and courage you have given us.”
Chai went on to say that each member of the group “will continue to represent and spread Neo Kawaii in our own individual ways” after they “travel Japan on our last tour to give Love to all of our Neo Kawaii Babies one last time.

Amp Fiddler, a keyboardist for George Clinton’s pioneering funk collective Parliament-Funkadelic and mentor to late Detroit producer J Dilla, has died. He was 65 years old.
The funk and soul musician had been recovering from a 2022 surgery for an undisclosed illness. A GoFundMe campaign launched last year raised more than $75,000 for Fiddler’s “continued healing as he journeys back to the stage,” and a benefit concert was held in his hometown of Detroit earlier this month to further cover medical expenses.
“Rest in eternal musical excellence Parliament-Funkadelic keyboardist Joseph Anthony “Amp” Fiddler,” Parliament-Funkadelic wrote on Facebook. “Fly on Amp! We love you dearly!”
Questlove paid tribute to Fiddler on Instagram, writing, “Rest easy brother Amp. For all those talks during the Pfunk tour. For all the music. Especially of course mentoring the one who mentored us (Dilla) — thank you brother.”

Eight years ago in August, African pay-tv giant MultiChoice Group launched streaming service Showmax in South Africa. Since then, it has expanded to 44 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, with a Showmax diaspora service also currently available in more than 30 international markets worldwide.
Showmax has made a name for itself with original content and not only caught the eye of people on the continent, but also those in London, Philadelphia and Hollywood. Earlier this year, MultiChoice and Comcast’s entertainment arm NBCUniversal and its London-based European pay-tv unit Sky struck a partnership that “will bring some of the world’s best content and technology to streaming customers” across sub-Saharan Africa “at a time when Africa is approaching an inflection point in terms of broadband connectivity and affordability.” The partners’ new Showmax group is 70 percent owned by MultiChoice and 30 percent owned by NBCUniversal. A24 has dated Jonathan Glazer’s World War II drama “The Zone of Interest.” The film, based loosely on the Martin Amis novel of the same name and the winner of both the Grand Prix and the Fipresci Prize out of Cannes, has been given a December release date. This means that the indie studio is positioning the film to factor in heavily to the year-end awards conversation (this is almost the exact same date that A24 opened the eventual Oscar-winner “The Whale” last year).
The plot of “The Zone of Interest” is described by the studio simply as: “The commandant of Auschwitz, Rudolf Höss, and his wife Hedwig, strive to build a dream life for their family in a house and garden next to the camp.” Our own review of the movie out of Cannes described it as “an austere and incandescent Holocaust drama. Neither provocation nor counter-point, ‘The Zone of Interest...

Many a viewer has said that The Voice isn’t really about the contestants, it’s about the coaches — and they may have a point.
But after Monday’s introduction of Chance the Rapper and Niall Horan to the mix (read the recap here), I was… kinda Ok with that. It’s immediately obvious to anyone who hears her work: Alex Isley has spent her entire life surrounded by music. The singer-songwriter mixes in all kinds of influences—jazz, classical, R&b, electronica, etc.—on her latest record, Marigold. On first glance, it’s easy to chalk up Charlie Puth’s music as gimmicky. After all, this is the guy who spent the pandemic throwing up thirst traps on Instagram and documenting the recording of his latest album, Charlie, with spastic, random videos on TikTok and Reels.

Kelly Brook left her radio co-host Jk redfaced after showing him a risqué photo of herself that will feature in The Crown.
The model and presenter has revealed that producers of the Netflix series requested to use the photo in a scene in the show’s sixth season, which will be set in either 1999 or the early 2000s, at the height pf Brook’s fame.
Brook, who co-hosts Heart Breakfast with Jamiroquai singer Jk, showed “the picture in question” on her phone, revealing that “it would be printed as a poster, and it would be put up in one of the character’s dressing rooms”.
She then told Jk: “Right, I’m going to click on the picture and show you. Are you ready?”
After seeing the photo, which shows Brook posing in her underwear, he said: “Oh dear! Hello. Hang on a second… I don’t... no, I can’t see that.

Carson Daly is remembering a terrifying time in music history. Following the release of the Netflix documentary Trainwreck: Woodstock '99, Carson recalled what it was like to host MTV's Total Request Live at the Woodstock '99 festival. "All I can say is I thought I was going to die," he wrote in an Aug. 11 Instagram post. Carson, 49, said it "started off great" as he interviewed artists like Jay Kay of the band Jamiroquai from the side of the main stage. But then they "started getting pelted with bottles, rocks, lighters, all of it," he recalled. According to Rolling Stone, the event, which was an ode to the original Woodstock festival in 1969, hosted over 200,000...

Netflix’s Resident Evil is kicking off a new era for the franchise on the small screen. After years of movie adaptations starring Milla Jovovich and directed by Paul W. S. Anderson, the franchise is shifting gears to tell a story unlike any we’ve ever seen on the big screen or in the games. This new Resident Evil series ditches Chris and Claire Redfield, Leon S. Kennedy, and Jill Valentine to tell a modern-day story about Albert Wesker and his family.
Starring the great Lance Reddick as the classic Resident Evil villain, the series not only gives us a complete reimagining of the character as a family man but also introduces us to his two teen daughters, Jade (Ella Balinska/Tamara Smart) and Billie (Adeline Rudolph/Siena Agudong), who have their own issues to deal with, like having to upend their whole lives to move with their father to...

Well, Saturday Night Live wasted no time in tackling this week’s infamous Oscars slap.
In his opening monologue — which you can watch above — host and stand-up comic Jerrod Carmichael didn’t even have to say Will Smith’s name, or Chris Rock’s or the Oscars, but we all knew exactly what he was talking about. “I’m not gonna talk about it,” he began. “I’ve talked about it enough… You can’t make me talk about it.” But talk about it he did: “Can you believe it’s been six days?… Doesn’t it feel like it happened years ago?...

Dancing in movies is nothing new, since the early days of cinema dancing has been a great way to perform a scene. However, most of these routines, as you’d expect, are in musicals. Yet there are a few non-musical films that throw in the odd surprising dance scene to great effect. Here are 6 unexpected yet awesome dance scenes.
6. Club Cringe – The Inbetweeners Movie (2011)
For some dancing isn’t easy, but in this case these guys make it look almost impossible. With the juxtaposition of Neil (Blake Harrison) flailing his limbs with some sort of rhythm next to Simon (Joe Thomas) jittering nervously and Will (Simon Bird) galloping his way to sheer embarrassment, this one hits the list for cringe factor alone. The final stage in this act results in Simon and Will choosing to copy Neil and if you ever think that Neil is the one to follow, you’re in the shit.

"Cooper, you're an amazing dancer, and you're a great choreographer, but as a boyfriend... you kinda suck" -- if you remember Jody Sawyer's classic line, you can call yourself a "Center Stage" fan. It's hard to believe it's been 15 years since Jody (Amanda Schull) danced into our hearts (and all over he ex-boyfriend's heart!) in the 2000 teen drama about ballet life at the fictitious American Ballet Academy. In honor of the film's 15th anniversary, toofab is taking a look back at the cast to see what they've been doing since the movie's big screen debut. So, where is Jody now? These days no movie can get away without a tie-in soundtrack. The latest is Fifty Shades of Grey, which brings together everyone from Beyoncé, Sia and Ellie Goulding.

I thought it would be fun to take a trip down memory lane to look at the film's soundtrack.
Let's set the scene: the year was 1998. You couldn't go anywhere without seeing a commercial, billboard, poster or memorabilia advertising Godzilla. The multi-pronged marketing strategy also included tie-in campaigns with Taco Bell and Edy's Ice Cream, among others.

The grooving at the end of Napoleon Dynamite to Jamiroquai's 'Canned Heat' is one of the coolest and funniest dance sequences in the history of cinema. But one guy just took that sequence to a whole new level.
Created by Matt Bray, the video features him dancing the 'Napoleon routine' for over 100 days and capturing it all on a GoPro.
Watch the 100 days of dance video:
Explaining why he did it, Bray wrote: "I wanted to do something along the lines of take a picture of myself every day for a year but different. I eventually came up with the idea of 100 days of dance.
"I really didn't want to do this for a year so I thought 100 days seemed pretty good.
"Overall it was pretty fun dancing every day and this was one of my more unique ideas and I'm pretty glad how it turned out.

It's happening. Cheryl Cole confirmed on Instagram last night that she'll be back on The X Factor this year - scooping all those tabloid exclusives, the cheeky minx - and it's fair to say the news has been divisive. While some can't wait to see the gorgeous Geordie back on their screens, others wish they never had to see her face again. Well, here in the Digital Spy office we're just as split on the issue: is it terrible or terrific? Read on as two of us battle it out - then let us know what you think...
For: "Cheryl has snark, sweetness and Simon skills" - Catriona Wightman, Entertainment Editor
Cheryl, Cheryl, Cheryl. Whatever you think of her, there's no other X Factor judge - Simon Cowell excepted, perhaps - who generates quite so much buzz. I think we can all agree that no-one's really cared about the last...

Upon hearing that the Jameson’s Cult Film Club’s screening of Gareth Edward’s Monsters was to be held at The Royal College of Surgeons, I questioned my lead; do they actually show films there? However, when I and my fellow blogger VIP’s were lead through the grand building to a rarely seen wing that contained ulcerated penises, cross sections of a child’s hollowed skull, jarred brains, animal mutations – among other biological oddities – the choice of location couldn’t have become more apt for a screening of a film called Monsters.
This was the location for our meet and greet with director Gareth Edwards. At just thirty-five years of age he has seen his first feature film gain the kind of recognition we haven’t seen since Quentin Tarantino and Kevin Smith in the nineties and has given Edwards the opportunity to direct Warner Bros’ mega budgeted Godzilla reboot,...

Thursday night saw the Jameson Cult Film Club’s latest screening, Monsters, threaten to decimate and infect Central London. I was there. I survived.
Priding themselves on a crowd pleasing combination of cult films in complementary locations with a dash, or two, of yummy free drinks (all made with Jameson Irish Whiskey of course), the Jcfc team shows no sign of hitting the wall. In fact they’re actually getting better all the time, with a screening of “Moon” at The Royal Institution and “Taxi Driver” screened in a grotty Soho car park being my highlights thus far.
For Monsters, the Jameson crew bagged themselves The Royal College of Surgeons and transformed it into an infected zone full of Hazmat teams, intrepid TV crews, jungle foliage and a sense of danger and excitement.
Luckily, myself, and a small cabal of other film bloggers, got to attend a little bit of...

Cheryl Cole has fought off competition from a flurry of new entries to secure her second UK number one solo album. The X Factor judge's Messy Little Raindrops topped the chart ahead of Bon Jovi's second Greatest Hits collection and the debut album from critically-acclaimed singer-songwriter Rumer, entitled Seasons Of My Soul. Meanwhile, music veteran Rod Stewart arrives at five with Fly Me To The Moon, the fifth release from his Great American Songbook series, and Jamiroquai secures his eighth UK top ten album with Rock Dust Light Star at seven. Directly behind is the 34th top 40 album of Neil Diamond's career, entitled Dreams, while Peter Andre returns to the chart at ten with Accelerate.
Other debuts just missing out on a spot in the top ten include Ne-Yo's Libra (more)...

Jamiroquai frontman Jay Kay has taken aim at pop phenomenon Lady GaGa, dismissing her as a "money-making freak". The "Space Cowboy" hitmaker is well known for his outspoken views, and recently launched a tirade against British pop star Cheryl Cole and Australian singer Dannii Minogue just hours before he performed on U.K. talent show "The X Factor" - on which they are both judges.
And the star didn't hold back when he was asked for his opinion on pop's current first lady GaGa, insisting she is nothing more than a music industry marketing tool. He says, "Lady Gaga is a money-making freak for her label. We (Jamiroquai) are not like that. We do music, not marketing. Lady GaGa is obviously a phenomenon. The world loves a freak. If the record companies see that they can make money with them, they will do anything."
"Don't worry, next time we'll come dressed in asparagus.

After Rev's finale featuring some seriously dodgy dancing, Sam Wollaston recalls other memorable examples of bad boogying on screen
When Tom Hollander as a drunk Adam Smallbone shook his booty to Dance Wiv Me by Dizzee Rascal featuring Calvin Harris at a vicars and tarts party in Monday night's episode of the BBC2 sitcom Rev, he joined an elite list of great bad screen dancers.
Jon Heder in Napoleon Dynamite
Not so much bad as out of character. Napoleon (pictured below) starts off slowly, shifting from foot to foot. But then Canned Heat by Jamiroquai gets going, and Napoleon totally freaks out. It demonstrates the power of dance, and changes Napolean's status in the school. Joyous.
Abigail Breslin in Little Miss Sunshine
More wrong than bad. Seven-year-old Olive performs a deeply inappropriate sexy burlesque strip to Super Freak by Rick James, horrifying the judges and everyone else at the Little Miss Sunshine beauty pageant.

Given Hollywood's terrible remake record, are fears about the forthcoming adaptation of this Swedish vampire original justified?
.
Everyone has their own favourite "bad remake" story. Some like the 1993 Sandra Bullock/Kiefer Sutherland remake of The Vanishing, which deserved to be retitled The Gormlessly Tacked-On Shovel Fight. Others preferred Roland Emmerich's 1998 Godzilla reboot, where all the post-Hiroshima nuclear paranoia was replaced by Jay Kay of Jamiroquai berking around in a silly hat on the soundtrack. Then there's the 2002 rehash of The Ring, where Samara climbs out of the TV set only to perform a razzle-dazzle version of I Am What I Am from La Cage aux Folles. The point is this: if you remake a foreign film into English, you're asking for trouble.
Which explains a lot of the apprehension surrounding Let Me In, the forthcoming Us adaptation of the acclaimed Swedish vampire movie Let The Right One In. The...
