We chat to John Madden, the director of The Debt, as he talks us through his previous life, when he made audio dramas of the Star Wars films...
John Madden might be best known to you for directing acclaimed period films such as Mrs Brown or Shakespeare In Love, but his latest, The Debt, is about as wildly different as you can get from those projects. Even before all of those, though, he was also the man charged with making radio dramas out of the original Star Wars trilogy.
Here, he chats to us about The Debt, and bringing Star Wars to the airwaves...
Can you take us through the casting process for The Debt firstly? You’re reuniting with Helen Mirren here, and we thought Jessica Chastain was just wonderful. At what stage did she become involved?

Director: John Madden Writers: Matthew Vaughn, Jane Goldman, Peter Straughan, Assaf Bernstein (Ha-Hov), Ido Rosenblum (Ha-Hov) Starring: Helen Mirren, Jessica Chastain, Tom Wilkinson, Marton Csokas, Ciarán Hinds, Sam Worthington, Romi Aboulafia, Jesper Christensen Based on Assaf Bernstein's 2007 Israeli film Ha-Hov, John Madden's English-language remake -- The Debt -- intelligently comments on the creation of political heroes and myths, all the while discussing the existential turmoil caused by having to live with a lie. But, opting for Oscar fodder over substance, The Debt attempts to traverse -- superficially, at best -- such emotionally heavy subjects as responsibility, guilt, sacrifice, revenge and regret. David, Stefan and Rachel's personal histories are so entrenched in the history of Israel that they will never be able to escape their past for as long as they live. Israel recognizes them as political heroes and there is no turning their backs on that. The truth...

Matthew Vaughn and Jane Goldman have been slowly, steadily building a reputation for themselves as a screenwriting team, and their collaborations so far include "Stardust," "Kick-Ass," and "X-Men First Class." The film that is surprising when you look at their filmography is this Friday's new release "The Debt," adapted from an Israeli film call "Ha-Hov" that was written by Assaf Bernstein and Ido Rosenblum. The script landed them on the Black List a few years ago, an informal annual collection of what some execs call the best unproduced scripts in a given year, and then went into production with John "Shakespeare...

The Debt Directed by: John Madden Written by: Matthew Vaughn, Jane Goldman, and Peter Straughan (screenplay); Assaf Bernstein and Ido Rosenblum (Ha-Hov movie) Starring: Helen Mirren, Tom Wilkinson, Cirian Hinds, Sam Worthington, Jessica Chastain, Marton Csokas, and Jesper Christensen At long last, we have a reprieve from all that dumbed down summer nonsense. The Debt is a true cinematic rarity these days. It’s smart adult fare for people who prefer not to lose Iq points every time they go to the cinema. Blockbusters have become synonymous with summer, but you can only see so many of them before you crave something a little more substantive. I didn’t realize how starving I was until I left the theater after my screening of The Debt feeling really, truly satisfied. Plus, I won’t need a manicure for quite some time, because I chewed all my nails down to little nubs.

The official trailer for The Debt has debuted. Check it out after the jump:
The Debt tells the story of three Mossad spies (Jessica Chastain, Sam Worthington, Marton Csokas) who attempt to capture and bring to trial the Surgeon of Birkenau, a Nazi war criminal, but something goes wrong. 30 years later, the doctor resurfaces, and the they (Hellen Mirren, Ciaran Hinds, Tom Wilkinson) must relive the trauma from so long ago. John Madden directs a Matthew Vaughn & Jane Goldman and Peter Straughan script, which is a remake of the film Ha-Hov by Assaf Bernstein and Ido Rosenblum.
This is the first I’ve seen of this film, and it has me really looking forward to it. When I first read about the movie, it sounded like another Sam Worthington-lead action flick, which was not appealing. This is definitely not another Clash of the Titans. I love the split narrative,...
