While the film Dog could be mistaken as another examination of the ravages of war, it proves itself to be a far more rewarding experience thanks in large part to an earnest performance from Channing Tatum, as well as one from his canine costar.
Essentially a “buddy” picture that follows two former Army Rangers – Briggs (Tatum) and Lulu (a Belgian Malinois dog) – as they make their way down the Pacific Coast to attend their fellow soldier’s funeral. As is the custom in this type of film, the pair initially drive each completely crazy and Briggs’s suspect motives for taking on the assignment make the two soldiers seem less than friends and more like adversaries until they each lower their emotional barriers and try to actually connect in a meaningful way with one another.
Although the film begins as a sort of mismatched pairing comical turn with Lulu not...

One of the major new movie releases this week poses a follow-up to the old chestnut about the friendship between a boy and his dog. So, does that extend into manhood? And would they be great “travel’ bros’ as in a buddy “road trip” adventure? Well, one of the silver screen’s “hunkiest” (maybe magical) leading men aims to explore that as he does double duty in front of and behind the camera. It’s a kibble-flavored popcorn flick as movie-goers embark on a hero’s journey alongside a lovable but difficult Dog.
The film’s title refers to Lulu (played by a trio of Belgian Malinois), a military canine trained to go into battle in the Middle East.

Not since Abbott and Costello in Buck Privates in 1941 and Lewis and Martin in At War With the Army in 1950 has a film raised greater concern about who they’re letting into the military these days than does Dog. Although he certainly possesses the requisite physique, Channing Tatum’s Army Ranger Briggs most of the time seems like such a screw-up that you’d definitely want him on the other guy’s team. The power of this Dog lies in its half-canine/half-human buddy comedy, which is genial enough, even if its aim is scatter-shot and its comic tone decidedly hit-and-miss.

After an aggressive bidding war with multiple major studios, North American rights for Channing Tatum’s film “Dog” have sold to MGM.
Tatum will star in and co-direct “Dog” with his longtime creative partner Reid Carolin. Carolin also wrote the script, based upon a story by Carolin and Brett Rodriguez.
The film is a road-trip comedy that tracks two hard-charging former Army Rangers paired against their will — Briggs (Tatum), and a Belgian Malinois named Lulu — as they race down the Pacific Coast in hopes of making it to a fellow soldier’s funeral on time. Along the way, they’ll drive each other completely crazy, confront the possibility that pet psychics are real, and begin to reckon with the one thing they were trained never to do: surrender.
Sale of its domestic rights comes following the film selling on international territories at Afm, where Tatum and Carolin delivered their presentation...

Pic stars Channing Tatum, who will co-direct the film with his longtime creative partner, Reid Carolin. Latter wrote the script based upon a story he hatched with Brett Rodriguez. Pic will shoot in May for U.S. release on Valentine’s Day weekend 2021 via MGM’s joint distribution and marketing entity United Artists Releasing.
Gregory Jacobs will produce along with Peter Kiernan and Rodriguez for Free Association. Executive Producers are Ken Meyer and Betsy Danbury.

A combination of star vehicles and high-octane action pics dominate our 2019 list of hot Afm market debuts.
Several glossy packages have come together in the last week: Channing Tatum is playing an Army Ranger with a canine buddy in road-trip comedy Dog; Rachel Weisz will star as Elizabeth Taylor in activism-focused tale A Special Relationship; Zac Efron is tracking John McAfee in the jungle in comedy King Of The Jungle; and Jessica Chastain will play a tormented artist in Losing Clementine. The market now looks well-stocked with titles that should pique buyers’ interest.
Last year, our Afm list had 3/24 projects with female directors, and it’s the exact same stat this year on our 25-strong roster, so no improvement there.
True stories seem to be in vogue. The Efron pic is based on a Wired article, Pathe has an art...
