“American Fiction,” “May December” and “Past Lives” dominated the 2024 Independent Spirit Awards nominations on Tuesday, picking up five nods apiece. The three movies are all up for best feature, where they will battle it out against “All of Us Strangers,” “Passages” and “We Grown Now.”
The annual honors recognize the best of television, as well as film. “The Last of Us,” a sci-fi epic that was a ratings hit for HBO, and “I’m a Virgo,” an absurdist miniseries from Boots Riley that was produced by Amazon, led the small screen crop, with four nominations each. Only new TV shows that have run for one season and were released between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31 of this year are eligible for awards. That’s why some big-budgeted fare was deemed eligible or, in the parlance of the show, independent.

Sebastián Silva’s “Rotting in the Sun” poked and prodded the 2023 Sundance Film Festival with its graphic, unsimulated gay sex scenes and full-frontal male nudity. But this dark existential meta-comedy about a filmmaker in freefall (also played by Silva) is deeper than all that chatter — as riotously funny and enjoyable as it may also be for those very same reasons. This sharp, self-flagellating satire of gay millennial life, co-starring social media star Jordan Firstman, finally opens from Mubi in theaters on September 8 before streaming on the platform September 15. Watch the trailer, an IndieWire exclusive, below.
“Rotting in the Sun” combines a timely skewering of gay narcissism with the filthy filmmaking spirit of John Waters and even a quasi-detective story. While dooming and glooming at a Mexican gay beach town that sure looks like Oaxaca’s nude vacation mecca Zipolite, depressed director Sebastián Silva (the filmmaker plays himself) is rescued from...

Sebastián Silva’s Mexico-set meta-comedy “Rotting in the Sun” has finally found a home in the U.S. and elsewhere after premiering at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2023.
IndieWire exclusively shares that Mubi has acquired the rights to the latest button-pushing work from the filmmaker behind “The Maid,” “Nasty Baby,” and “Crystal Fairy.” The Park City premiere stars Silva as a version of himself, here a filmmaker staring down an existential crisis while adrift over his busted latest project, and comedian and social media sensation Jordan Firstman also as a version of himself, an outspokenly gay influencer who blows up the fictional Silva’s life.
This raunchy, sexually explicit satire of gay millennial life amused and provoked Sundance audiences with its graphic content, unapologetic drug use, and a narrative hairpin turn typical of Silva’s low-budget, genre-mixing indies. In a quote shared by Mubi, Bret Easton Ellis said the...

Actor Ben Platt and the producers of the Broadway show “Parade” have responded to the antisemitic protest that took place outside of Broadway’s Bernard B. Jacobs Theater Tuesday evening, where Platt is starring in a revival of the 1998 musical.
“Parade” tells the true story of the trial, imprisonment, and lynching of a Jewish American man who was erroneously convicted of murdering a teenage girl in 1910s Atlanta. The protestors were from a neo-Nazi group called the National Socialist Movement, according to the Forward, and they promoted antisemitic rhetoric to theatergoers waiting to enter the theater for the show’s first preview performance.
Platt addressed the protests in a video he posted to Instagram Tuesday night.

Ben Platt is opening up about the antisemitic protests for Broadway’s “Parade.”
Platt stars as real-life factory superintendent Leo Frank, who was wrongfully convicted of the 1913 rape and murder of 13-year-old employee Mary Phagan. In 1915, two men broke into the Georgia state prison and lynched Frank. The events in part led to the founding of the Anti-Defamation League and the rebirth of the Ku Klux Klan. Frank’s life story was adapted into the 1998 musical “Parade,” which now is returning to Broadway in a revival. “Parade” stars Platt and Micaela Diamond and is currently in preview performances before officially opening March 16 at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre.
However, the first performance was met with antisemitic protests accusing the production of “romanticizing pedophiles,” per a video shared by The Forward editor Jake Wasserman.

Ben Platt and the team behind the Broadway revival of Parade, which tells the true story of a Jewish factory worker in Georgia who was falsely accused of murdering a teenage girl and later lynched by an antisemitic mob, have responded to the “very ugly and scary” antisemitic protests that took place outside the musical’s first preview performance.
Patrons attending Tuesday night’s production at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre were met with antisemitic shouts and chants outside the venue, part of a protest led by members of the neo-Nazi group the National Socialist Movement. Update, with Equity statement: A small but vocally aggressive group of antisemitic protesters outside the Broadway venue housing the first preview of the revival Parade shouted slurs and decades-old accusations against the musical’s main character, Leo Frank.
Parade tells the based-on-fact story of the wrongly accused Frank, a Jewish man tried and eventually lynched in 1913 Georgia for the murder of 13-year-old Mary Phagan.
The protesters outside the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre on W. 45th Street last night resurrected some of the same accusations made against Frank in his day and against Jews yet today. In one cellphone video of the incident, a protester can be heard loudly telling the lines of ticketbuyers, “Even in early 1900s Blacks and whites united to hang the Jew.”
Other shouts reported included “[Leo Frank is] a Jewish pedophile” and “Learn the truth about what you’re going to see tonight. You’re paying $300 to go f*cking worship a pedophile,...

On Rotting in the Sun, Silva is reunited with Catalina Saavedra – the actress from his 2009 hit The Maid and also reunites with producer Jake Wasserman (2018’s Tyrel) and Film Editor Sofia Subercaseaux — who has teamed on several of his films dating back to Crystal Fairy & the Magical Cactus.…...

Magnolia Pictures has acquired worldwide rights to the Jason Mitchell comedy “Tyrel,” written and directed by Sebastian Silva.
The ensemble cast includes Michael Cera, Chris Abbott, Ann Dowd, and Caleb Landry Jones, and the film chronicles a cabin party in the Catskills that finds protagonist Tyler (Mitchell) as the sole black man at a weekend getaway full of drunken debauchery. The film world premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January. Magnolia is targeting a theatrical release this year.
Dennis Harvey wrote in his review for Variety: “Think ‘Get Out’ without the horror-fantasy element, but with a lot more alcohol consumption, and you’ve got the gist of ‘Tyrel.'”
“Sebastian Silva continues to upset the apple cart in the most interesting ways with this scaldingly fresh take on being the other,” said Magnolia president Eamonn Bowles.
Silva said, “I’m thrilled and honored that ‘Tyrel’ has found its home with Magnolia.

Magnolia Pictures has acquired worldwide rights to the cabin party film, Tyrel, starring Straight Outta Compton and Mudbound star Jason Mitchell, along with Michael Cera, Chris Abbott, Ann Dowd, and Caleb Landry Jones. Sebastián Silva wrote and directed the pic which premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.
The film follows Tyler, who joins his friend on a trip to the Catskills for a weekend birthday party with several people he doesn’t know. As soon as they get there, it’s clear that not only is he the only black guy but it’s also going to be a weekend of heavy drinking. While in “Whitesville,” the combination of all the testosterone and alcohol starts to get out of hand, and Tyler’s precarious situation starts to feel like a nightmare.
Silva, Max Born, and Jacob Wasserman produced the film, which Magnolia will distribute in theaters sometime this year.

As the definition of an independent film has shifted with the ever-expanding budget divide in American filmmaking — particularly Hollywood cutting back on its mid-range projects — when it comes time for awards season, it’s often only the highest profile of “indie films” that get recognized. While we do our best to recognize the films that often get unfortunately, a new awards has launched that honors the best of truly independent American cinema, featuring films all under a $1 million budget.
Aptly titled the American Independent Film Awards (aka AIFAs), they were voted on by international film festival programmers, U.S. based film festival programmers, and North American film critics (including yours truly.) “First and foremost, we would like to thank all film producers and distribution companies who helped us identify qualifying films and outline the categories. Take two thesps from the previous Sundance film festival who both broke out big and then pair them up for your directorial debut. This is the chance that was afforded to Wayne Roberts. Grand Jury Sundance winning Me and Earl and the Dying Girl‘s Olivia Cooke and Next section winning James White‘s Christopher Abbott were enlisted for Katie Says Goodbye back in March for the New Mexico production. Included on the Blacklist’s weekly top read scripts and described as a blend of coming-of-ager, a modern Western and the first part of a possible trilogy, this appears to visit some dark matter and tonally could be the antithesis of The Girlfriend Experience.

Supported by the same folks who brought us Mona Fastvold’s The Sleepwalker (Sundance 2014) and accompanied by the Borderline Films crew (who need no introduction on this site but what is worth the mention is how extremely productive they are beyond their own back-to-back features (James White and Christine) first-time filmmaker Nicolas Pesce is well versed in the art of eye candy (this year’s clip for Tei Shi’s Bassically is addictive). The under the radar project saw principal photography come to a close this October. Starring Kika Malgahaes, Will Brill, Clara Wong, Flora Diaz, and Olivia Bond, The Eyes of My Mother sounds indie spirit from someone who appears to have a skillset and more importantly, already have a distinct eye.
