Exclusive: Dove Cameron (Schmigadoon!) and Avan Jogia (Orphan Black: Echoes) have been set to topline Obsession, a thriller series produced by Amazon MGM Studios and Atomic Monster, which was ordered at the end of last year.
Written and executive produced by Lisa Zwerling and Karyn Usher, the show is based on Catherine Ryan Howard’s 2021 international bestseller 56 Days. The story follows Oliver (Jogia) and Ciara (Cameron), who, after meeting randomly in a supermarket, fall for each other fast, and dangerously hard. 56 days later, homicide investigators arrive at Oliver’s apartment to find an unidentified body — brutally murdered and intentionally decomposed. Did he kill her? Did she kill him? Intercutting between an intense single day in the present investigation and the twisted trajectory of the young lovers’ affair in the past, the series is both a crime story and an erotic, psychological thriller.

Sharon Stone surprised fans in January when she revealed on Instagram that she tried and failed to pitch a “Barbie” movie in the 1990s, decades before Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie would make their own adaptation to the tune of $1.4 billion worldwide (the highest-grossing film of 2023) and eight Academy Award nominations. Stone said she got “laughed out of the studio” back then. She recently dropped some new info about her axed “Barbie” movie while visiting Dana Carvey and David Spade’s “Fly On The Wall” podcast.
“I went to the studio to try and make Barbie in the 1990s with a producer, a friend of mine, and I had the then-ceo of Mattel on my side. We got thrown out of the studio,” Stone recalled. “They were like, ‘Why would you take this American icon and try to destroy it? What is wrong with you?’ I got a lecture and an escort to the door.

Sharon Stone is among many of the would-be Barbies alongside Amy Schumer, Anne Hathaway, and Gal Gadot.
The “Casino” and “Basic Instinct” star shared on Instagram that studio executives “laughed” at her pitch in the 1990s to adapt the story behind the Barbie doll for the big screen.
“I was laughed out [of] the studio when I came [with] the Barbie idea in the ’90s [with] the support of the head of Barbie,” Stone wrote in a comment to “Barbie” actress America Ferrara on an Instagram post showing Ferrara’s Critics Choice Awards speech. “How far we’ve come. Thank you ladies for your courage and endurance.”
Ferrara was honored with the Seeher award at the 2024 Critics Choice Awards, where “Barbie” received wins for Best Song, Best Original Screenplay, Best Production Design, Best Costume Design, Best Hair and Make-Up, and Best Comedy.
“Barbie” was co-written by Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach, with Gerwig directing.

Sharon Stone has revealed that she once attempted to pitch a “Barbie” movie to a Hollywood studio during the 1990s and was laughed out of the room. What a difference a couple of decades makes, as Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie’s “Barbie” opened last year and earned a staggering $1.4 billion to become the top-grossing film of 2023 and the biggest earner in Warner Bros.’ studio history.

Actress Anne Hathaway was considering playing Barbie for Sony Pictures back in 2017 with Alethea Jones circling to direct. However, that didn’t materialise and the actress is glad. The Oscar-winner said in hindsight, it’s a “lucky thing” that never happened, reports Deadline.
The actress said the team behind this year’s ‘Barbie’, “hit a bullseye.” She continued, referencing her 2017 project, “Now imagine that version, that much energy, that much anticipation, that much emotion, but it’s not the right version.” Hathaway offered her assessment on Josh Horowitz’s ‘Happy Sad Confused’ podcast.
As per Deadline, she was equally effusive in her praise for the woman who is the producer and eventual actual onscreen Barbie, Margot Robbie.
She said, “Margot is just sublime, period. What she is doing as a creative person and a producer is so exciting and inspiring. And the mythic giants they toppled with (Barbie) that have...

Way back in 2017, Hathaway was considering playing Barbie for Sony Pictures, with Alethea Jones circling to direct. The Oscar-winner says now, in hindsight, it’s a “lucky thing” that never happened.

Anne Hathaway said it was “lucky” that her Barbie film never got made, given that Greta Gerwig’s movie “hit a bullseye.”
In 2017, it was revealed that the Eileen star was attached to Sony’s Barbie film after Amy Schumer dropped out of the project citing “scheduling conflicts” at the time. Though it was set for a May 2020 release date, with Alethea Jones directing, the movie never materialized.
This allowed for Margot Robbie’s production company, Lucky Chap, to come in and convince Warner Bros. to take on the movie, with Robbie starring and Gerwig directing.
Now, on a recent episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Hathaway had nothing but praise for the record-breaking summer blockbuster that brought the famous doll to life.

Anne Hathaway appeared on the latest “Happy Sad Confused” podcast and called it “lucky” that her iteration of the “Barbie” movie never got off the ground considering the phenomenon that Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” became over the summer. Back in July 2017, Hathaway was announced as the star of Sony’s “Barbie” movie. Comedian Amy Schumer was originally cast, but Hathaway took over the role after Schumer departed.
Hathaway’s “Barbie” was supposed to come out in June 2018. Australian filmmaker Alethea Jones, best known for helming the comedy “Fun Mom Dinner,” was in talks to direct the film, which sources described as in the vein of “Splash,” “Enchanted” and “Big.” Schumer did a polish on the script, which followed Barbie as she get kicked out of Barbieland for not being perfect enough and lands in a real-world adventure. ABC is making some changes to its lineup following the resolution of the writers strike.
Comedy Home Economics has been canceled after three seasons, and new drama High Potential has been moved to fall 2024.
ABC still has to make decisions on a renewal for The Rookie: Feds and the status of The Good Lawyer, a backdoor-pilot spinoff of The Good Doctor. It passed on four of its pilots in June: Anthony Anderson-fronted Public Defenders and Ellie Kemper-led Keeping It Together, which is a remake of British comedy Motherland, as well as dramas The Hurt Unit, starring Melissa George and Ben McKenzie, and Judgement starring Sex/Life’s Sarah Shahi.

Barbie is looking like a box office beauty, racking up the strongest preview night numbers of the year and heading for a weekend gross that could top $100 million — that could buy Warner Bros. a whole lot of dream houses.
But the Mattel icon’s pink Corvette took a very long road to the big screen, and before writer-director Greta Gerwig, writer Noah Baumbach and star Margot Robbie, there were other top creatives attached to the on-again, off-again project.
Below is a brief history of Barbie’s journey from one of the most popular toys in the world to theaters:
1959. The Barbie fashion doll, created by Ruth Handler, is launched.
Literally 50 years pass.
2009: Mattel, the makers of Barbie, sign a deal with Universal Pictures to make a film about the iconic doll. That deal fell through.

‘Grease: Rise Of The Pink Ladies’ Creator Calls Paramount+ Cancellation “A Particularly Brutal Move”
The creator of the Paramount+ series Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies says she is “devastated” that the series is not only canceled but will be removed from the streaming service.
Earlier Friday, Paramount+ canceled several of its original series, including Pink Ladies as well as Star Trek: Prodigy, Queen of the Universe and The Game. The streamer is also taking the series off the platform as a content write-down.
Reacting to the news, creator Annabel Oakes wrote on her Instagram Stories: “In a particularly brutal move, it is also being removed from @paramountplus next and unless it finds a new home you will no longer be able to watch it anywhere. The cast, my creative partners, and I are all devastated at the complete erasure of our show.”
Oakes thanked the “beautiful fans” who have engaged with series and reminded them that “the music will remain even after the show is taken down.

When “Mrs. Davis” director and executive producer Owen Harris read the pilot script for the Peacock limited series, he had one response. “I sent an email straight back to my agent saying, ‘What the f–k have I just read?’” Harris tells Gold Derby in our Making of “Mrs. Davis” video roundtable exclusive interview. “And then I quickly followed it up with, ‘But I love it. It’s amazing. We have to do this.’ And I think that sort of everyone had a similar reaction.”

Amy Schumer has revealed the real reason why she left the Barbie movie – and it’s not what they told us at the time. While playing Plead the Fifth on “Watch What Happens Live,” the comedian admitted that she didn’t drop out due to scheduling conflicts, but creative differences.
“I think it was scheduling conflicts,” Schumer said. “That’s what we said. But, yeah, it really was creative differences. But you know what? There’s a new team behind it, and it looks like it’s very feminist and cool.”
When host Andy Cohen pressed her, asking if the project didn’t feel “feminist and cool” when she was involved in it, Schumer confirmed that was the case.

Singing and dancing auditions over Zoom, shoots in the rain in Vancouver and filming during the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic — none of that stopped the cast and creators from bringing “big Grease energy” to the set of the Paramount+ series, Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies.

How do you even begin to reboot something as iconic as “Grease”? It’s no easy task, but “Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies” proves that it’s certainly possible.
The hit Paramount+ series takes audiences back to the 1950s — even further back than the original 1978 film did. Danny Zuko and Sandy Olsson fell in love in the summer of 1958, but “Rise of the Pink Ladies” begins in 1954 as the girl gang that Bettie Rizzo would eventually rule is attempting to reverse their fortunes and rise to prominence in the halls of Rydell High School. The series expands on the lore that made “Grease” so beloved, and adds origin stories for several of the film’s most popular songs — while introducing a new set of tunes that are modern classics in their own right.

One of the very, very few topics that virtually every film and TV fan can agree on is that “Grease” is fantastic. The 1978 musical — which stars John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John as two high schoolers who find their summer romance tested by the social dynamics at Rydell High School — is the kind of timeless, feel-good entertainment that’s virtually impossible to dislike.
The film rode the wave of 1950s nostalgia that swept the nation in the ’70s (see: “Happy Days” and “American Grafitti”) to become one of the most recognizable films ever made. An incredible songbook that includes all-timers, from the “Summer Nights” solo and “You’re the One That I Want” duet to Frankie Avalon’s dreamy “Beauty School Dropout,” make it the sort of film that you can rewatch any time, anywhere and almost always enjoy yourself.
How do you put your own spin on a property that’s so beloved?...

The major broadcast networks are trying very hard this year to do what they do best – create franchise drama series built around the adventures of larger-than-life characters.
Kathy Bates, Kaitlin Olson, Carrie Preston and Shanola Hampton are among the female actors hoping to click as distinctive protagonists with new series in the 2023-24 season. Bates will bring to life a next-generation “Matlock,” while Preston limns a new chapter for Elsbeth Tascioni, the attorney character she has played on and off on CBS’ “The Good Wife” and Paramount+’s “The Good Fight” since 2010.
This is good news for the hundreds of international television buyers heading to Los Angeles for next week’s LA Screenings market. Another welcome development is that the largest media congloms are now on a big push to reopen their doors to third-party buyers, after a few years of holding back the biggest shows for in-house streaming services.

ABC has handed Drew Goddard’s pilot High Potential, starring Kaitlin Olson, a series order.
The pickup is not surprising; the drama, based on the popular French detective series Hip (High Intellectual Potential) has been the clear frontrunner among ABC’s crop of 2023 pilots.
It is the only pilot ABC is making a decision ahead of its upfront. The remaining five, dramas The Good Lawyer, The Hurt Unit and Judgment, and comedies Keeping it Together (fka Drop-Off) and Public Defenders, remain in contention.
Networks already have been shifting toward year-round development and have not been doing all of their pilot decisions before upfronts. With the writers strike this year, they are even more cautious, taking a wait-and-see approach given the financial commitment and logistical issues associated with a new series order if the work stoppage stretches over several months. ABC has awhile before the pilot casts’ options are up, and...

“Mrs. Davis” may be one of the most surprising and unconventional new series of the spring — and now it’s making a surprising and unconventional move in the Emmy race as well. As the Television Academy deadline for category submissions ends today, Peacock has decided to make a last-minute shift and move the series into the limited/anthology series categories.
Betty Gilpin stars in “Mrs. Davis” as Simone, a sometimes nun who takes on her nemesis, the artificial intelligence being known only as “Mrs. Davis,” and strikes a deal with the algorithm — which promises to shut down if Simone finds and destroys the holy grail. This exploration of faith and technology comes from executive producers Tara Hernandez (“The Big Bang Theory”) and Damon Lindelof (“The Leftovers”).

Plot: “Mrs. Davis” is the world’s most powerful Artificial Intelligence. Simone is the nun devoted to destroying Her. Who ya got?
Review: It takes a lot to catch me off guard. I have seen countless movies and television series over the years that have been billed as shocking or revolutionary, game-changing, and even unlike anything that has ever been seen before. Few of these have actually delivered on the hyperbole used to market them, but every now and then, I am truly surprised by the originality that is still possible. Mrs. Davis is one of those series that truly earns the distinction of being unlike anything else ever made. With the distinctive creative talents of Tara Hernandez and Damon Lindelof behind the scenes, Mrs. Davis echoes the satirical brilliance of Terry Gilliam’s Brazil with a modern technological flair for a hilarious, action-packed story and thought-provoking series about faith,...

“Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies” music producer and songwriter Justin Tranter says their prolific career actually started with a passion for musicals.
“Musicals are why I started making music as a kid. Even though I was in a rock band and now I make pop music, musicals are why I started making music in the first place,” the Grammy-nominated songwriter told Variety at the Paramount+ series’ premiere Wednesday night in Los Angeles. Tranter has worked with Ariana Grande, Dua Lipa, Selena Gomez, Lady Gaga, the Chicks, Leon Bridges, Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber, just to name a few.
After “fighting hard” to join “Rise of the Pink Ladies” and providing demos for showrunner Annabel Oakes, the two then teamed up with choreographer Jamal Sims for the series. Along with some co-writers, Tranter wrote and produced 30 original songs for the 10-episode season.

The Los Angeles premiere of the new Paramount+ original series “Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies” was held on Wednesday, March 29 at the Hollywood American Legion Post 43. Gold Derby’s associate editor Latasha Ford interviewed several cast members and behind-the-scenes talent including actors Cheyenne Isabel Wells, Jackie Hoffman, Shanel Bailey, Josette Halpert, Vivian Lomolli, Emma Shannon, Dylan Sloane, Madison Thompson and Niamh Wilson, creator Annabel Oakes, “Grease 2” star Lorna Luft, executive producer Alethea Jones, choreographer and director Jamal Sims and executive music producer Justin Tranter on the red carpet. The musical series takes place four years before the original “Grease.” In 1954, before rock ‘n’ roll ruled, before the T-Birds were the coolest in the school, four fed-up outcasts dare to have fun on their own terms, sparking a moral panic that will change Rydell High forever. The show will premiere on Thursday, April 6, exclusively on Paramount+ in the U.

Prepare to be amazed — but first, prepare to be really, really confused. When it comes to boggling the mind, Emmy-award-winning writer-producer Damon Lindelof is nothing if not consistent. His latest venture might be his weirdest yet: "Mrs. Davis" is a quaint little Peacock series about the epic battle between the world's most powerful Artificial Intelligence and the nun devoted to destroying her.
The series hails from Lindelof and Tara Hernandez ("The Big Bang Theory"). Hernandez showruns the series and co-writes with Lindelof, and the two creators executive produce with directors Owen Harris ("Black Mirror: San Junipero") and Alethea Jones ("Evil"). It's one hell of a creative team, backed by a solid cast: Betty Gilpin (of "Glow" fame) stars as Simone, the nun who will hopefully save the world. Other cast members include Jake McDorman ("Dopesick"), Andy McQueen ("Station Eleven"), Margo Martindale ("Cocaine Bear"), David Arquette ("Scream"), Elizabeth Marvel ("The Dropout"), and more.

Betty Gilpin starred in the thriller The Hunt, which was co-written by Damon Lindelof, and now she and Lindelof have teamed up again for the Peacock streaming service series Mrs. Davis, which is set to make its premiere on April 20th. With that premiere date drawing near, a teaser trailer for Mrs. Davis has arrived online – but don’t expect to learn much about the show from this teaser trailer. A lot about the series is still being kept under wraps. But if you’re interested in being teased, the trailer can be seen in the embed above.
According to Deadline, “the teaser is described as a high concept featurette that introduces Mrs. Davis to viewers and invites them to join her quest. The 30-second clip appears to show people from across the globe being handed an earpiece as someone tells them ‘she wants to talk to you.’“

If there’s one thing that Damon Lindelof is known for, it’s making really great shows that can also get really, really weird. And based on the latest teaser released Wednesday, his new Peacock show “Mrs. Davis” looks like it might be the “Leftovers” and “Watchmen” creator’s most oddball project yet.
Co-created by Lindelof and “The Big Bang Theory” and “Young Sheldon” writer Tara Hernandez, “Mrs. Davis” stars “Glow” alum Betty Gilpin not as the title character but as Simone, a nun who is dead set on defeating the title character, who happens to be a powerful Artificial Intelligence program slowly taking over the entire world. Jake McDorman co-stars with Gilpin as Simone’s ex-boyfriend, rodeo cowboy Wiley, but neither actor makes an appearance in the 30-second teaser which, according to Peacock, does not consist of any actual footage from the show.

Peacock released a teaser trailer for the new Damon Lindelof series “Mrs. Davis,” introducing the world’s most powerful artificial intelligence of the same name.
In the 30-second clip, no footage from the actual series is shown. Instead, various people around the world walk up to another person – in a town square, at a wedding, in the middle of a stand-up comedy show – and say, “She wants to talk to you.”
The “she” in question is Mrs. Davis herself, in the form of an AirPod-like earpiece. After accepting the earpiece, which they always do, the people look thrilled, shocked and/or excited.
The high-concept series from the creator of “Lost,” “The Leftovers” and “Watchmen” stars Betty Gilpin (“Glow”) as Simone, a nun whose mission is to destroy Mrs. Davis. Jake McDorman (“Dopesick”) and Andy McQueen (“Station Eleven”) co-star in what has been described as a “wildly original and genre-bending journey.

Mrs. Davis wants to talk to you.
Peacock released the first teaser on Wednesday for its upcoming series from Damon Lindelof, Mrs. Davis. But if you were hoping to get another glimpse of, well, any footage from the show, you won’t find it here.
Instead, the teaser is described as a “high concept” featurette that introduces Mrs. Davis to viewers and “invites them to join her quest.” The 30-second clip appears to show people from across the globe being handed an earpiece as someone tells them “she wants to talk to you.”
Mrs. Davis is described as “an exploration of faith versus technology — an epic battle of biblical and binary proportions.” Betty Gilpin plays Simone, a nun who goes to battle against an all-powerful Artificial Intelligence known as “Mrs. Davis.”
Gilpin will star alongside Jake McDorman, who plays Gilpin’s rebellious ex, who also has a personal vendetta against the Algorithm.
